1:47 is Huron River dam top line at Ann Arbor in front of the Barton Hills hydro electric station still in use today for electricity, freight and Amtrak.
I was around when the NYC existed but was never around the rr--my parents werent railfans and my dad hated trains. In Chicago, there were just a few places to go to see trains. You didnt venture into certain neighborhoods and back then you were restricted to just a few areas. This was from the 50's thru the early 80's!!!!!
Nice to see New York Central's "Great Steel Fleet" on film. I remember back in my youth days of the 70s-80s wising that film clips of the NYC J-Class Hudsons existed. I'm glad to see that they have all along. Did these clips come from collector's, railroad archives, rail fans? They look excellent!
used to have a switcher go by my house with coal for the Uniroyal plant/Ball Band.....took tracks up and trestle, and took plant down.....new trestle is there but not the same, just a walk way........Like these videos of the good ole days.
My uncle Frank was a New York Central employee at one time. He hired on the NYC in 1952, and he worked for them until 1968, when he became a Penn Central employee, and he worked on mostly former Pennsylvania Railroad trackage in the Penn Central era. When Conrail was born, he returned to the former NYC lines and continued until he retired from the railroad business in 1980. Sadly, he died in 1989, but he left behind a great collection of New York Central photos, but I forgot where I put them. :(
I think that's the Kalamazoo, Michigan station at 0:36 and BO Tower in Kalamazoo at 0:42. The tower still stands today, and the station has been beautifully restored (they added a bus terminal onto the front, but the architects did a good job matching it to the station). 4 Amtrak trains now pass through Kalamazoo each way per day and another one has been proposed!
@JoeRailfan you could be right, the first view would be looking west at an eastbound arriving. It is coming around a curve where the MC had a small yard & Roundhouse at one time, the South Haven branch came off there. I used to get 10cent rootbeers at an A&W stand in the inside of that curve in the 50s. in the second view, if correct, you are seeing TWO towers, the first one was the PRR tower and BO tower is seen in the distance. The PRR tower is preserved offsite, BO tower still active.
Gee lots of Michigan Central stuff here! I rode the sold out "Wolerine" Business class a few weeks ago. 95mph, soon to be 110mph. Chicago to Detroit corridor.
@intercityrailpal i can never make out those loco's wit the stripes ... Are they central michigan and if so why the title here?.. i see a few NYC loco's .. i love the music and shots anyway..
that hue of green was the NYC, the PC green was just a bit darker, and used on caboose and cars only, the locos were all black, the repainted ones that is.
Technically that was a green as well, in use by the PRR since their first diesel. Once the PRR bought the NYC, it essentially ceased to exist. as the PRR dominated Penn Central.
The most famous locomotive ever was New York Central & Hudson River RR #999, a 4-4-0 biult for speed. She was the first human vehicle to go faster than 100 mph, in May 1893. The engineer was Charlie Hogan, who worked for the NYC from 1864 to 1939, 75 years! The 999 is now at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Hogan is there too, as a figurine with an audio track. I am doing the audio. Come and visit us!
@ photography Aurora: unfortunately it's not. I've been searching for it, and have gone through over 350 Stan Kenton titles and several versions of Eager Beaver and have come up empty so far. :( sometime I'll find it. It might not be a Kenton tune, but it sure sounds like his orchestra's style.
My Uncle Artie used to work for and revere the NY Central. We used to sit on the bank above the train line in Yonkers in the late 1950S and he'd tell me how proud he was to have worked for them (by then, he had retired).
Today, you work for a place that uses you and then you walk, allegiance non-existent. What a vast improvement.
Your right actually Pentrex is very good ive probably bought 15 vids from them but i always liked Green frogs push on classic railroading. Im only 24 so i love seeing things that were before my time. Ive never seen any fallen flags really, i just grew up seeing nothing but conrail EVERYWHERE. So Green Frog always had a special spot with me
Thanks. That just sounds too good to be generic - - it sounds to me like either Woody Herman or Stand Kenton, circa late 40's. A really terrific song. Maybe some of those big bands recorded numbers for generic libraries as practice! If anyone knows the name of this piece, please let us know! I'm a train fan and a jazz fan! The music goes very well with the train footage since they're both of the same era and these are probably silent films anyway. Thanks for posting.
@niselat I can't see Dogg and Violent J armed with cameras and thermoses. Since the Posse from Michigan they might have more of an interest in the NYC. Unless they prefer the Pere Marquette.
hey i own K&J Productions i do not sell video i make as for free on my release i have memory of new york centralit is on youtube i made the video of it
Some of the scenes appear to be along the ROW of NYC's CASO Sub through ON, Canada? At :23-26 and 2:13 it looks like the overpass west of Rougemere Yd in Detroit, MI?
@Driverman2008 - If you have V-Downloader on you computer, just copy and paste this URL into it, then download it as an MP3 and you'll have the exact recording.
LOL, they played that beginning song in another train video I've seen! It was a rare Model Layout video called "Model Railroads in Action": 5 Great Layouts from Great Model Railroads magazine.
The Big Band music sets the feel for the 40's and early 50's...good choice...also like that Kankakee, Lafayette, Elkhart and South Bend are probably represented here..
excellent to see & to hear !!! GREAT JOB Thank U Sharing with us
