Bravo! Excellent usage of the "less is more" technique. I've heard more renditions of this piece than the number of muscles it takes to produce a smile, and this is one of my favorites.
Nice work. If you are playing Thelonious Monk you should try to paw and beat the keys like your are mad at them. :) He was once coined "the elephant on the keyboard" (Philip Larkin)
I do understand the amount of time u put into this song and I have to give you props on being able to insert your own personality into the music while at the same time demonstrating a theme out of the Monk school....Good Job!
There are talented people like yourself who inspire me to continue to practice. Utterly amazing! You really have a Bill Evans touch and calmness. Great work and more please!!
I had the good fortune of seeking Monk live many times, when he was at what was, for a considerable time, his 'home base' in NYC, the Five Spot on St. Marks Place. I was in my early 20's (in those early '60's days), and I sat there with 'shades' on, writing 'beat poetry' for tourists -- for drinks! It was a hoot!
Nellie had her hands full in his latter years. But she'd been his mainstay forever. Bless both of them! He was a miracle the jazz world will never see again!
im in love with this take on the song... its how i would dream up the song to sound, beyond my abilities but with realm of human possibilities. Awe some.
Well guys... and dolls... this is about the best performance I ever heard of the subject matter... relaxed, unobtrusive, improvisatory, original... everything you want. Excellent hand position, superb technique... this dude must be someone we all know but he stays incognito... or else we all should know him. tried to make som i.di by the hands and their usage... to no avail...
Wow, it's so refreshing to see performances like this on YouTube. Pure professionalism here. Love the performance. I heard Chick Corea playing Round Midnight last week at Blue Note, and I must say I enjoy your performance as much. Thank you for posting.
SUPER NICE. Great job. This is like my second favorite performance of this song behind Monk himself. Bad ass, man. I just learned the chords to this song the other day - I hope I can play it like you eventually.
no metronome, who cares, this piece doesnt need it. it demands full rubato....I always felt. nice to see a good performance on youtube for a change. ive played this piece for years and youve kept my interest through out.
This is incredibly inspiring. You sound like my favourite players. I can hear the Bill Evans sense of harmony in there alongside the sheer eccentricity of Monk's rhythmic plays. It's a match made in heaven.
No metronome needed here (in response to your info/description). Other than the fact that you at times treat the tempo and phrase lengths with some flexibility (which I like in a solo like this), your sense of time seems to be really, really good throught this piece.
I love it! But I wish I could find someone who could show me how to play this more like Thelonious Monk, man he is so SICK! The best timing ever! IF anyone finds one that will show me the fingering let me know!
Some amazing playing. 7notemode mentions that his favorite version is Monk's followed by Bill Evans's version. I beg to differ. There is none more poignant, in my heart, than Keith Jarrett's solo piano version. (I do NOT care for his trio's version, I must say.) Yes, Jarrett loses the time a bit in the solo version, but thanks to the music muse that there are those willing to lose it a little in an attempt to stretch farther than even they comfortably can.
i enjoyed the performance..and thanks because i have to play this as a ballad and im not a great reader yet so by hearing it it allows me to get a sense of rhythm and time for the piece.
I'm yet to understand what makes Monk the Jazz genius that he is. That isn't to say that I don't appreciate his music. I have utmost respect for his compositions. I just don't understand what makes him a pioneer in Jazz...
He's often regarded as the founder of bebop. This is a quote from Wikipedia pertaining to bebop. "Bebop differed drastically from the straightforward compositions of the swing era, and was instead characterized by fast tempos, asymmetrical phrasing, intricate melodies, and rhythm sections that expanded on their role as tempo-keepers." I'll continue the rest of the quote in a second comment.
"The music itself seemed jarringly different to the ears of the public, who were used to the bouncy, organized, danceable tunes of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller during the swing era. Instead, bebop appeared to sound racing, nervous, and often fragmented. But to jazz musicians and jazz music lovers, bebop was an exciting and beautiful revolution in the art of jazz."
The man was truly a genius. He had a very unique percussive style which would often manifest as crashing discordant chords followed by abrupt silences. His improv skills were virtuoso, the angular and complex melodies that jar the depths of one's psyche are disturbing yet addictive. The man just embodied creativity.
Monk has a UNIQUE style.. His use of dissonance, space, angular lines, rhythmic displacement, colorful reharmonisations. Monk had his own way of hearing things.. He didnt think his chords were "weird'
I think people can give their own perspective of this standard and it doesn't have to sound exactly like the record don't you think? I think this version is nice it's just different rhythmic ideas!
Whatt!!??! Have you ever heard Monk's rhythmic stride piano on this tune. He swings and keeps the pulse moving with his left hand while spinning off-center musical ideas with his right hand. A bit more exciting then this rendition, no offense.
I have gotten such satisfaction from hearing you play this many many evenings since I 'favorited' this tune! Your version is remarkable! I love your sassy 'going out there' playing to put a bitter sweet twist to it!
