  • Bravo! Excellent usage of the "less is more" technique. I've heard more renditions of this piece than the number of muscles it takes to produce a smile, and this is one of my favorites.

  • Respect

  • Nice work. If you are playing Thelonious Monk you should try to paw and beat the keys like your are mad at them. :) He was once coined "the elephant on the keyboard" (Philip Larkin)

  • Concise and effective! Great song an playing. Thank you...

  • @er38 Thanks so much!

  • This is so tasty, sir. Thanks for the music!!!

  • Soooooooooooooo good :)

  • dynamics dynamics dynamics

  • perfect , extra prima performance you re a great piano jazz player , my friend and composer also !!

  • "which I tend to do when I play for myself." -I wish I had the explicit, uncensored edition!

Otherwise, justice done to a song rarely done justice to!

  • Fantastic performance and I would also like to request John Coltrane's Pursuance you are quite good enough for that solo!

  • isto é muito bom ! (brazilian)

  • Superb!

  • wonderful

  • at the risk of sounding corny it really seems like you know why your playing the way you are.. like you understand it it guess haha great job!

  • I do understand the amount of time u put into this song and I have to give you props on being able to insert your own personality into the music while at the same time demonstrating a theme out of the Monk school....Good Job!

  • I see why this has so many views. Yeah, you are in the zone all the way on this one - very deep. I didn't want it to end. ;-)

  • its SO hard to play Monk, but i think you NAILED it here man! great stuff

  • round midnight take five: same key Eb min

  • i like this version...economical-maintains the purity of the tune/melody

  • Perfecto!!! You're unlike style of play and own sound makes you one of the greatest! 10/10 for you, thanks for this! Check out my vids

  • In heaven we all play like that.....great music, Thanks!

  • @daqono Thank you so much!

  • @7notemode i really want to get the chords and melody for this song, where can i get it?

  • @daqono So are you saying that they are in heaven? whoa

  • In heaven we all play like that.....

  • What kind of piano is that?

  • bravo!

  • I love all the parts where you played octave!! Nice performance...

  • Wonderful. Would like to hear this arrangement with drums & bass comping.

  • very very very nice!!

    I love this.

    greetings singer

  • Excellent job! This is my favourite jazz song!

  • Normally I don't respond to youtube videos, but it just has to be said: this was one of the most beautiful performances on piano I have ever heard.

  • @Iemand79 Thank you for such a generous comment!

  • i wanna be able to play the piano in that style soooo bad :/

    excellent

  • There are talented people like yourself who inspire me to continue to practice. Utterly amazing! You really have a Bill Evans touch and calmness. Great work and more please!!

  • @Antonsimms123 Thanks so much!

  • Are you a proffesional pianist?

How long have you been playing?

  • I had the good fortune of seeking Monk live many times, when he was at what was, for a considerable time, his 'home base' in NYC, the Five Spot on St. Marks Place. I was in my early 20's (in those early '60's days), and I sat there with 'shades' on, writing 'beat poetry' for tourists -- for drinks! It was a hoot!

Nellie had her hands full in his latter years. But she'd been his mainstay forever. Bless both of them! He was a miracle the jazz world will never see again!

  • wow, this really inspires me to start playing again, thank you!

  • im in love with this take on the song... its how i would dream up the song to sound, beyond my abilities but with realm of human possibilities. Awe some.

  • gorgeous. And the piano tone is great. Nice one.

  • This is great stuff. I enjoyed this alot.

  • If everything you play is like this, I would honestly pay to see you play. I'm really digging it.

  • very nice, the timing on this song is key to making it sound so soothing and you got it just right

  • @Hanny317 Thanks!

  • you need drums on backgraund =))))

  • thank you, for takeing me on to that beautiful journey...

  • How did u record this?

  • @olivercarlehed Two mic's just outside the case 18" apart on a stereo bar.

  • were can you get this sheet music!

  • @nick5006taylor sorry, no sheets. It was improvised. I'm working on learning Sibelius.

  • Yours It is so good... I am sure Monk would have love it too !!! Beautiful !!!

  • @claudrocket1 Thanks! I appreciate it.

  • Beautiful interpretation..!

  • simply amazing. keep playing man. you are awesome. such a soft elegant tone.

    -san francisco

  • @goucho1169 Thx, goucho!

  • i think its too much chaotic... some parts are brilliant, but some just go over

  • that was absotutely slendiforous!!!!! loved, loved, loved it!!!!!!!!

  • @111pianolover Haha! Thanks for that!

  • i think this is a terrific version..you did it justice

  • great work man. just great.

  • Impeccable.

  • Well guys... and dolls... this is about the best performance I ever heard of the subject matter... relaxed, unobtrusive, improvisatory, original... everything you want. Excellent hand position, superb technique... this dude must be someone we all know but he stays incognito... or else we all should know him. tried to make som i.di by the hands and their usage... to no avail...

    Excellent,,, I am indebted forever...

  • @fradifoci Thank you so much, fradifoci. I appreciate it.

  • @fradifoci All of the above !! just feel it and love it xx

  • Wow, it's so refreshing to see performances like this on YouTube. Pure professionalism here. Love the performance. I heard Chick Corea playing Round Midnight last week at Blue Note, and I must say I enjoy your performance as much. Thank you for posting.

  • @dvamateur CC at the Blue Note! Wish I were there! Thank you for such a generous compliment.

  • Very impressive. Artistically played, and your understanding of Jazz piano and jazz theory is inspiring to me. thanks for this performance.

  • yeah you should reaaaaallly repost with a metronome. This song is missing that rhythmic swagger that the song itself has.

  • wow i love it when people are able to play really fast! :D

  • SUPER NICE. Great job. This is like my second favorite performance of this song behind Monk himself. Bad ass, man. I just learned the chords to this song the other day - I hope I can play it like you eventually.

  • @xxchesarexx Thanks!! Keep up the piano playing!

  • lol

no metronome, who cares, this piece doesnt need it. it demands full rubato....I always felt. nice to see a good performance on youtube for a change. ive played this piece for years and youve kept my interest through out.

    thanks!!

  • That's quite a chord 7.34 and then 7.35!

    What is exactly is that?

  • @247Joy A7 to Ab7-- notes in RH from bottom up: G Bb C# F# A with A in LH. All notes come down half a step from there.

  • @7notemode

    Thanks!

This is incredibly inspiring. You sound like my favourite players. I can hear the Bill Evans sense of harmony in there alongside the sheer eccentricity of Monk's rhythmic plays. It's a match made in heaven.

  • This is just great!

  • wow, thats so good. anyone know where to get the sheetmusic?

  • @sk8freak51392 sorry, no transcript.

  • very good, congratulations!

  • wow, really good!!! What piano are you playing on? I love the sound of it!

  • This is every bit as inspiring as listening to one of the greats.

  • Thank you for such a touching compliment, LoxRandom.

  • No metronome needed here (in response to your info/description). Other than the fact that you at times treat the tempo and phrase lengths with some flexibility (which I like in a solo like this), your sense of time seems to be really, really good throught this piece.

  • I.. am.. speechless. Great, simply great. :D

  • Thx! StCB

  • Incredibly inventive. Thoughtful. Strategic. Well Done !

  • Thanks kevin120857!

  • well done!

  • Thumbs up!

  • I liked the few misses you made, better than if you were playing with a metronome, gave feeling to the song. 5 stars.

  • I love it! But I wish I could find someone who could show me how to play this more like Thelonious Monk, man he is so SICK! The best timing ever! IF anyone finds one that will show me the fingering let me know!

  • very beautiful!

  • 7notemode has the best timing

  • Thanks areolaman!

  • Some amazing playing. 7notemode mentions that his favorite version is Monk's followed by Bill Evans's version. I beg to differ. There is none more poignant, in my heart, than Keith Jarrett's solo piano version. (I do NOT care for his trio's version, I must say.) Yes, Jarrett loses the time a bit in the solo version, but thanks to the music muse that there are those willing to lose it a little in an attempt to stretch farther than even they comfortably can.

  • i enjoyed the performance..and thanks because i have to play this as a ballad and im not a great reader yet so by hearing it it allows me to get a sense of rhythm and time for the piece.

  • It's always a treat to run into a young musician who totally got it. Kudos! What's the next mountain?

  • I've heard many many a version of this tune. This is absolutely fantastic.... but I'm sure it goes without saying.

  • thanks stacia 217, and thanks to everyone for the nice comments.

  • nice...

  • as i can see (properly, hear) the guy is classicist not jazzman and it sounds totally different. Everything is well with the player but music..

  • of course he's a jazzman

  • this is amazing

  • beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cool interpretation

  • NIce! What resource did you get the changes from? Or all by ear?

  • DDM, it's by ear although it can be found in The Real Book, vol I, I believe.

  • Hey, you have a smooth sound there.

  • I'm yet to understand what makes Monk the Jazz genius that he is. That isn't to say that I don't appreciate his music. I have utmost respect for his compositions. I just don't understand what makes him a pioneer in Jazz...

Can anyone explain it to me?

  • He's often regarded as the founder of bebop. This is a quote from Wikipedia pertaining to bebop. "Bebop differed drastically from the straightforward compositions of the swing era, and was instead characterized by fast tempos, asymmetrical phrasing, intricate melodies, and rhythm sections that expanded on their role as tempo-keepers." I'll continue the rest of the quote in a second comment.

  • "The music itself seemed jarringly different to the ears of the public, who were used to the bouncy, organized, danceable tunes of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller during the swing era. Instead, bebop appeared to sound racing, nervous, and often fragmented. But to jazz musicians and jazz music lovers, bebop was an exciting and beautiful revolution in the art of jazz."

  • The man was truly a genius. He had a very unique percussive style which would often manifest as crashing discordant chords followed by abrupt silences. His improv skills were virtuoso, the angular and complex melodies that jar the depths of one's psyche are disturbing yet addictive. The man just embodied creativity.

  • To put it simply I think Monk greatly contributed to Jazz being a more intellectual endeavor.

  • Monk has a UNIQUE style.. His use of dissonance, space, angular lines, rhythmic displacement, colorful reharmonisations. Monk had his own way of hearing things.. He didnt think his chords were "weird'

  • Bill Evans all the way!

  • Very Smooth<:-)

  • I favorited this almost a year ago, and it's still beautiful to listen to.

  • Thanks miesterman. I appreciate it.

  • I think people can give their own perspective of this standard and it doesn't have to sound exactly like the record don't you think? I think this version is nice it's just different rhythmic ideas!

  • Simply beautiful!

  • great

  • That's funny, that this is brought to us by 7 note mode. Aren't most modes 7 notes?

Of course, there's always a la mode. I'm happy enough with 1 of those, 'Round Midnight.

    Thanks!!!

  • Quite an inspiration... Plain enough, complex enough, original.

    Bravo

  • i love your control.

  • à 3:12, clin d'oeil to Epistrophy

  • this style reminds me of Mr. Roger's theme.

  • so clean!

  • How you record?

    Sound perfect!

And your playing is so musical! Thank you for jazz!

    It's my favorite theme.

  • There are so many versions of this beautiful ballad yet I keep going back to

Thelonious Monk -' Round Midnight posted by Jacopoj -surprisingly viewed less than 1000 times yet so eloquently

    represents Monk's unique expressive style.

  • Awfully pretty. Sometimes I think others are better trusted playing Monk's compositions than he was.

  • Whatt!!??! Have you ever heard Monk's rhythmic stride piano on this tune. He swings and keeps the pulse moving with his left hand while spinning off-center musical ideas with his right hand. A bit more exciting then this rendition, no offense.

  • I have gotten such satisfaction from hearing you play this many many evenings since I 'favorited' this tune! Your version is remarkable! I love your sassy 'going out there' playing to put a bitter sweet twist to it!

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you Johnboyjwg, I appreciate it..

  • hard to find jazz in my city they just play the same old crap

  • very clean. very good. not using a metronome was the right choice.

  • this piece is unbelievebly stunning

  • So clean! Just clean no crap beauty. Thanks for upload!

  • Growing in music is tough. I felt like give up, but after listening 2 U everyday, it doesn't matter how long it takes me 2 get on this level, I know I will b happy

Thanks 4 all the FREE lessons

  • i was fine until i listened to him. now i feel like giving up.

  • Ha! Funny nethyphenvordotnet. Thanks.

  • And they say that pure beauty doesn't exist... Liars.

  • it is too hard for me to comprehend how somebody was capable of creating this...

  • This is so wonderful. I love it. I'm going to favorite this. great job!

  • By any chance, are you that blindfolded player at those mansion parties I attend with people dressed up in black robes and masks?

  • wut?

  • awesome

  • wow

  • Beautiful work

  • i think that this has such a deep feeling to it and you have really made this your own. i like the fact that without taking away the brilliance you HAVE gone against the structure i think its so brilliantly unique!!! lovely version of the song i could listen to you play for hours.

  • Still wonderful Jazz...

  • No, metronome not needed.

So much of the appeal is in the rhythmic uncertainty.

    Well done.

  • I love this. It's such a beautiful piece. Great version!

  • love it

  • I really like this, but as much as I don't know anything about theory, I have to say Monk's erratic timing is the core of his magic, while your play is precise to the last note. Otherwise, I wish I had some time to learn to dabble in music.

  • Monk also had an apparent simplicity in how he rendered melodies, and with his dissonances and erratic rhythm it almost seemed half accidental, or discovered on the spot. This quality was part of Monk's unique charm. This is a brilliant version, just maybe different from how Monk would play it.

  • Bravo!

  • very nice arrangement

  • outstanding

and with a deep understanding of monk as well

  • beautifully played, really nice harmonies and an arrangement that really hold your interest. awesome job, thanks :o)

  • this is truely amazing. its nice to listen to someone who's personality is implemented in their piano laying.

  • this is the real thing right here. great job on lush life also. thanks for posting your beautiful arrangements.

  • This is so unique, I love the original and yours is hard to sing with I'll say but I love your interpritation. That's what jazz is all about after all. Making it your own and you have done just that my friend!

  • I wish I could play Jazz music ! I love it ! You are awesome

  • incredible job! once the melody of this piece gets in your head you can never forget it and i love your interpretation so much. bravo!

  • Where can I get 'Round Midnight- Thelonious Monk sheet music? I've been looking forever for it. I want to learn it so badly. If I only I can find the sheet music for it. Any websites I can purchase it from?

  • It´s in Real Book vol 6 (or 5 if you can get the illegal original which is much better, pm me if you want that version since I know a store). Real Book is a series of standard literature for any jazz musician.

  • I sent you a message via Youtube.

  • es para ti burris conponte pronto

  • Monk est un sculpteur de musique, ça éclabousse de beauté, de rigueur et d'humour !

  • Monk was ahead of his time no doubt, even today folks are still trying to figure his

    music out.

  • Really nice arrangement. I see how no matter how much "school" one may have, it still comes down to being creative. The music theory is just the toolbox. The creativity has to come from within.

    Great playing!

  • I'm gonna say this is me.

  • Smooth and warm, very nice!

  • Beautiful !!

  • This still sounds great. I wonder how it would sound recorded with an MR-1000. ;)

I like the "bending piano" video trick at the end. :))

  • bellissimo...

  • Very smooth...awesome skills!
