  • why is he trying to get involved with the suarez and evra row oh thats why he's a former fucking manc just fuck off will you how would he fucking know anything

  • @24SparrowJack How about you fuck off spamming your deluded shit on a tribute video to the man, fucking pleb - aren't you red shite banning more newspapers or something?

  • Just watching that amazing double header and that tremendous block is enough to motavate me to kill a man!!!

  • Im from Mallorca and I was working in a hotel during my school holidays in 1986. And I met him. I have to say that even Ive always been a keen fan of British and Irish football (I used to buy "shoot" or "match" every week, even when my English was very poor, more than nowadays haha, cause at school I learnt French) I didnt know him, he was not a regular in 86. Paul and his family spent 2 weeks there. He was very kind. I remember one day asking me to paly one of his tapes by Madness in the hotel.

  • I'm only 29 years old and it saddens me to think that I've already witnessed the best player that I will ever see play the game.

  • Holy shit, this is my friends dad.

  • Seen him today at tots for big boys in Dublin. What a legend!

  • whats the name of this song.

  • 1:50 to 2:16 was fucking epic.

  • what a hero, hes needs to come back and show how its dunne :)

  • where can i listen to his cd,,.

  • ah lads dont ya know Paul McGrath isn't real. It's only an Irish myth. like Fionn Mac Cumhaill, Cú Culann, Paul McGrath etc..

  • i would say he's a persistent fighting spirit of an Irish blood

  • Unbelievable player.

Best centre-back/defender full-stop, and one of the best players, if not the best, i ever saw play.

Could've played anywhere on the pitch and been equally dominant; literally, had everything.

  • What a legend!! Paul you mean so much to so many!! Villa 'till i die

  • oh ah paul mcgrath, say oh ah paul mcgrath. man united, villa & irish legend. one of the greatest centre halves of all time & the 1st premiership player of the year. someone tell baggio its nothing to be ashamed of, to be in paul mcgraths arse pocket. just ask rush, cantona & shearer.

  • There should be a better tribute than this, not that this was a bad one i just find the music to be some what not fitting. He is worth that is he not?

  • Best centre back of all time

  • Brilliant player his autobiography is incredible

  • @RonnieStretchMorgan Where might one find his autobiography?

Im from Sweden not easy to find stuff like this to buy.

  • @Jonzer1983 try amazon thats where i got mine its called back from the brink

  • @RonnieStretchMorgan Awfully depressing book, but it shows the true character of the man and his pure....legendness to put his body through what he did for nation and club. Met the man on Abbey St in 98 during World Cup after the Italy/USA match, my favourite picture ever. In the name of the Father, the Son, and Paul McGrath. Amen

  • paul mc grath kept baggio (best player in the world at that time) and the whole of italy at bay that day at giants stadium. remember jumping off the setee for the goal when i was 10. even though im a liverpool supporter. paul mc grath was a great player.

  • One of the best defenders ever! If he didn't have that notorious alcohol problem, and if he was as fit as an average footballer, then in my mind he would of been the best defender ever!

  • When I name my all-time XI McGrath is the one player whose position is always guaranteed. A hero to every Irish person.

  • 03:47 - 03:50 is that Roy keane helping Mcgrath?

  • @Jonzer1983 yes

  • it just frightening to think the player he would have been if he was ever actually fit when he played

  • @londonxcalling Tell me about it,id say he would have stayed at United for his career if it wasnt for his knee and drink problem.I highly recommend his auto biography if you get the chance to read it.Absolutely incredible life story and not like the other shit ones out there.

He turned up at Goodison Park to play for Villa still drunk after a 3 day bender in Dublin,he was still pissed on the field.Guess who got man of the match?Yep McGrath, absolutely ridiculous.Genius and a mad man

  • my best united centre half i have watched world class

  • my best united centre half i have watched world class

  • Best defender ever to grace this country, bar none.

  • McGrath and Maldini 2 GODS

  • HAve hated Giggs ever since that look of "I deserved this" when he lost to the better player.

Arrogance. A truly Manchester United disease.

  • fantastic tribute without a doubt, very well put together, what the name of the song backing it?

  • If only McGrath and Laursen had been around at the same time. To me, the two greatest centre halves that have ever pulled on a Villa shirt. Paul McGrath - God ... Martin Laursen - Legend ...

  • Always a hero at Villa Park. Quite possibly the best defender that I've ever seen - no! Definitely the best defender that I've ever seen! Sod it! The best bloody footballer that I've ever seen! They come no better than God!

  • legend,gr8 video

  • True legend of the game. Greatest defender ever

  • the black pearl of inchicore

  • i wonder what he would be worth now? PRICELESS.... truely brilliant keeping the italians at bay!!!!

  • Brilliant Paul. Have watched it 609 times now, and cried 608.

  • Paul, you're a legend. He's a credit to Irishness. The greats are always touched by demons, footballers are no different and Paul is a smart guy, so he'd feel those demons that little bit more. Take a bow Paul Mc Grath!!!

  • Was talkin to him today at the walk of dreams got his signature :)

  • @rosslo21 jealous man, i'd love to meet him, his book is amazing. Sad but amazing.

  • Can we swap Dunne and Collins for McGrath and Laursen?

  • New York, Summer, 1994:

    PAUL MCGRATH 1 - ITALY 0

  • A very nice man aswell as one of irelands greatest footballers

  • That game @ '94 world cup USA against Italy!! OMG!! I mean Roberto Baggio was 1 of the Best players ever to grace the field BUT Our 'OOH ARR PAUL McGRATH' played him off the Pitch!! AWESOME!!!

  • NOT JUST 1 OF IRELANDS GREATEST PLAYERS!! 1 OF THE WORLDS!!! TOTAL LEGEND!!

  • RIP paul

  • A true legend of the game. The best defender i have ever seen the game against Italy has to go down as one of the best preformance's of any defender anywere.

  • And the award for greatest ever individual performance in a game of football goes to..... PAUL MCGRATH V ITALY

  • a really true footballing warrior. i've just read his book, its a great read, brutally honest. being a Celtic fan i was amazed that he nearly signed for celtic a couple of times. He would have been adored by the Celtic fans............ infact he is anyway,

  • ABSOLUTE LEGEND

  • A great football player,a decent bloke never mind his weaknesses paul mc grath is a LEGEND,A TRUE HERO OF IRISH FOOTBALL,

  • Had Baggio in his pocket! 3 dislikes, wtf!

Imagine how much better he would have been without the drink. An absolute giant in football terms.

  • @problemchimp2 3 dislikes are probably a standard hateful attention seeking hun, some feminist lessie that writes for a tabloid, and a retarded kid that clicked dislike by accident. Baggio would publicly admit he never met a better centre half. He would admit it but he's still trying to get out of Pauls pocket!

  • Irelands greatest ever player.

Ireland Vs Italy US 94 was him at his best.

  • @Metatarsal I can only vote this up once no matter how many times I shout and click fast! This man speaks the truth, Metatarsal for Tanaiste, Paul for President! (I wouldn't curse you with Taoiseach!)

  • Comment removed

  • Fifa needs to add him to a "Legends List" or at least be honored in the bloody game by EA Sports

  • the most solid of c-words

  • Absolute legend , im proud to say im from the same country as this man

  • can anybody tell me who the first black irish man to play in lansdowne road was??

  • @mousiemul

    I'd say Chris Hughton

  • @dennisahern sorry mate it was phil lynott from Thin Lizzy haha, thumb this up

  • @mousiemul

I am pretty sure it was Chris Hughton

  • Best Defender .. Oh Ah Paul Mcgrath Oh Ah Paul Mcgrath

  • pure legend.,nobody could touch him

  • a pure legend!! =D

  • world class player...

  • the most talented defender ever

    you are a god paul

    UTV

  • the best defender i have ever seen,he always played for the opposition, bloke is a legend

  • Chris Hughton was the 1st black player to play for Ireland by the way.

  • @rockeee He said too captain "ireland" not the first

  • he was a fantastic tackler too.. not many clips of it but i remember a few one on ones that he took control of with ease.. amazing player.. great man

  • Not a Legend... Just GOD

  • @0121zero I disagree. Some do not believe in God, God can make mistakes. I can hear, in heaven, Ceraphims saying to each other about God when he pisses them of:

"Who does he think he is? Paul Mcgrath?"

  • Lovely video mate, Hope the big man is well. Absolute Legend.

  • Best Villa player ever! Best centre half from these islands in my lifetime by a mile. The afternoon he had Baggio in his pocket in NY, the day he kept that whinging Andy Gray in his pocket at Wembley. Oh and the day he kept Cantona very quiet in 1994 even the Old Bugger himself had to congratulate the Big Lad on that one.

And an oft forgotten one from his midfield days - the night in Turin (c1984) when he and Whiteside helped run Juventus (Europe's strongest team) ragged in one half.

  • O LORD PAUL MCGRATH!!!

  • the best..

  • i was talking to paul yesterday, met him at a charity event, what a nice guy

  • Super post! I reckon Puyol models himself on PmcG!! Never a better centre half in the premiership. NOT ONE OF THEM!

  • My Lord

  • The Scott Hall of the Football world

  • I can see Sean St Ledger being the next Paul McGrath, during the algeria game the lad picked up everything

  • what a player,an absolute hero

  • what a player,an absolute hero

  • without a doubt, he was the worlds greatest ever defender!! Imagine how amazing he would have been if he was able to train??

  • Great video, met Paul a few years ago, an absolute gent and an incredible footballer!!

  • In my opinion the greatest defender that ever lived. Very useful in midfield too. A class class act

  • Legend!

  • read his book clearly a man with a big heart and a big weight on his shoulders. found his happiness and some peace during every 90 minutes of our wonderful game

  • i dont have any heros but if i did big mac would be top of the list

    terry birmingham

  • met him in the arlington temple bar last week after the united match, what a gentlemen an can put a few pints down him too!!

  • Ireland's hero....

You are a credit to your country.

if only we had more like you.

  • just finished reading his book too young to know how good he really was by all accounts true irish hero..maybe the best ever..him,keano,brady...mcgrath you legend...

  • thanks everyone for your comments im speaking on behalf of my dad BIG PAUL, i showed him the video and he was very happy that people still admire his skill. thanks. jordan M

  • The Black Pearl of Inchicore. You're a legend Paul the most natural player you'll ever see.

  • Without a doubt the best defender i have ever seen

  • my hero growing up uh ah Paul mcgrath we say uh ah paul mcgrath!!! legend big man

  • better than terry, better than vidic or rio, better than anyone, andif any cunt denies that, your a twat

  • @conormcgihon1 He was a great player but just because someone might say Rio, Vidic or Terry are better does not make them a twat!....everyone is entitled to their opinion mate...I think he was quality, better than Vidic for sure....not sure about Rio or Terry, they are quality too.....especially Rio....if he laid off the booze he may have been even better, who knows

  • @conormcgihon1 i agree well said

  • @conormcgihon1

imagine if he had two good knees lol, absolute legend big paul

  • @conormcgihon1 HERE HERE!!! UTV!!! Its your round my lord ...... SOTC

  • @conormcgihon1 a legend of the game!

  • @conormcgihon1 I was about to thumb your comment up till I read the second half of it, everyone is entitled to their opinion without having to be condemned to cuntdom, including you.

I won't thumb it down though, because McGrath was a true all-time-great.

  • what a hero to ireland, what a player, had such an understated look about him when he played

  • The most under rated Irish footballer ever, and he had alot more potential than he showed too

  • McGrath is a legend!

  • We still chant his name down the Villa thats how good he was.

  • Class player and a class man

  • Outstanding tribute to an outstanding player.Paul McG would have graced any team in any era.Watched him regularly until Fergie had to choose between Bryan Robson, Paul Mc and "nutty Norman" Whiteside.

It's also easy to forget that Paul was no slouch in midfield!! You sense that he probably didn't really know how good he was.All achieved half cut and only able to train on a gym bike.

Hopefully he now has a more peaceful and calmer life.Just think Man City paid £24m for Lescott!!!

  • I really feel for this guy... being adopted, I was blessed to avoid ending up in a series of Church run homes like Paul, and with him being what they used to call 'half caste', I'd say he really had a rough time. That he emerged from it like he did was wonderful. I think I heard him talking once about his mam coming to visit him once a year, no Christmas presents or real love growing up... no wonder he's had problems since. I have nothing but respect for the man.

  • What would he be worth now? The big man had it all.. pace, vision. You name it he had it.

His autobiography is a very deep read written from the heart.

Hope he has conquered his demons and realises how much pleasure he gave thousands. LEGEND

  • He'd be worth the exact same as he was when he played .......PRICELESS..A NATIONAL TREASURE.

  • Paul McGrath was, without a shadow of a doubt one of the finest defenders to ever grace the game of football. When you consider what a centre back should be you need look no further than McGrath. I am glad someone has made this compilation. I looked for one a while back but to no avail so it's good to see this up. Hope Pauli is beating the booze now. Haven't heard much of an update on that one. God give him strength

  • "The first black man to captain his country". Somehow I find that hard to believe considering African teams have been playing football for a hundred years.

  • to captain ireland it means

  • "his country" being Ireland ye plonker. That's what that meant. He was the first black man to ever captain The Republic of Ireland

  • Thanks for this. Needed to watch something like this after last night! A true colossus of a player. Love him.

  • Thank you

  • Simply the greatest ever. If only we had him now

  • One of the best defenders in the world of his time .always gave 100% on the pitch ..irish legend .

  • My hero. The best centre back there ever was. Paul McGrath, the word legend isn't big enough to describe what a fantastic footballer you really were and genuinely nice you still are.

  • the best there ever was he could have played for brazil

  • A true Irish hero, fuck Keane and Stephen Ireland, traitors

  • Too right!

  • A LEGEND, Captain Paul

  • I'm a QPR supporter and I have seen all this world cup stuff about McGrath - but I saw him live in 5 games home and away against QPR and I have never seen a better centre half .... he could read a game like no other that I have seen live

  • a legend and a gent. he had Baggio in his pocket along with many other strikers. the whole of Ireland loves him. I seen him 2 weeks ago in Dublin, he looks great.

  • you could have had 10mins of footage from the italy game alone.injections in the knees just to play the games, imagine if he actually ever trained??tragic personal life.lovable character.they just dont make them like they used to

  • Great video .love paul mcgrath

  • You thought who died ? if paul mcgrath . no hes alive and well. has a drinking issue but hes okay.

  • Brian Gilsenan. 32 from Dublin.

paul Mc Grath w\as the greatest player ever to wear the green .

    LEGEND.............................

  • What a player, had a tear in my eye watching the Italy game in '94. What would he go for in his prime in todays game? Priceless.

  • Great vid Gerry. Really enjoyed it. Brought a tear to the eye!!

  • You probably shouldn't have heroes when you get older, but I'm 28 and when I grow up I wanna be Paul McGrath!! His talent and dedication in any jersey is what kids should be shown, not diving whinging fakes.

  • Paul McGrath. Damn. I loved that player.

  • I have just finished reading his autobiography today. What an incredible story! What an incredible man!

  • @JonnyM574 Sad story all right. He beat Italy on his own that day in New York. Every ball that went in the box came right back out. Legend. Get well soon Paul.

  • @JonnyM574 its incredble how he drank a pint of domestos and survived

  • Paul McGrath is a Villa God. He was so good he made Phil Babb look like a good player.

  • he had 2 dodgy knees was on the piss till 3 in the morning on a friday night before a game but what an awesome player he never let anyone get the better of him he was the best defender in the world at one time a true united great

  • Paul: Born in Ealing West London Single Irish Mum they move to Ireland when Paul was a wee boy.

Me: Born in Ireland single Irish Mum moved to Ealing West London when I was a wee boy.

Paul: Never known his Real Dad (Black)

Me: Never known my real Dad (White)

Paul: Lives in the Northern Hemisphere

Me: Live in the Southern Hemisphere

Paul: Possibly one of the best defenders ever

    Me: Sticker

  • Highly Recommend his autobiography, the best football biography i have ever read!

  • Is it not quite sad I know hw had bad mental health issues and the drinking. Not the happiest of childhoods either

  • It is sad, very moving and powerful

  • Its hard to imagine he was only 60 % fit against italy here

  • what a player

imagine what he would be worth in transfer market now

    absolute legend

  • A player of incredible quality ..Very few defenders in todays game match the ability paul had .

  • rio can dream haha

  • Yeah, I read the autobiography too, not one hint of self-promotion throughout.

Absolute gent and what a performer, no matter what shape his life was in off the pitch, he never failed to deliver on it.......

    Thanks for the tribute

  • I was lucky enough to have seen him play towards the end of his career and what a player he was. I read his book about 12 months ago and it just made me like him even more, he's 'real'. Nice vid mate, Macca, what a legend!!! Grand, as he'd say.

  • sends a shiver , incredible

  • Just finished reading his autobiography.....was a bit young to have seen him playing that much but what a sad, heroic and amazing life he led. He may have had his troubles off the field but on the fields he was hero to not only the fans but his fellow players also. A brilliant piece of video, fair play GerryD.

  • he aint dead dude haha

  • paul mcgrath is up there with the likes of franco baresi.thats how good he was.two of the greatest irishmen in entertainment phil lynott and paulmcgrath and they were both black.

  • Paul McGrath m'lord.

  • Young players should be made to watch this. They all want to be heros but it's nice to see a great defender being put up there as a hero.
