They don't make em like that any more.. Gorgonzola cheesy !!
It's fascinating to see how audio kit has progressed over the years, some have been overtaken, others become classic effects that everyone wants.. like the space echo etc.
The one thing I can't understand is why the CD won popularity over the minidisc.
The minidisc is far better. They're all rewritable, they're protected inside a case and smaller. CD's as we know, scratch worse than vinyl !!
@SONGSTICKS Minidisc used lossy compression, throwing out music data to squeeze the disc size down. Like MP3, only of lesser quality because the lossy compression routines were not as well developed at that point. So people rejected it based on perceived lesser audio quality, plus it being a proprietary format.
I've had one since 1998. The zip disk was a cost problem for me back then; they were £10 each. Technological progress & Ebay came to my rescue over recent years; I now have bucketloads of disks that cost me pence. Using one disk for each song is the only way - recording quality set at best and away I go.
Ease of use - it IS easy if you are prepared to put a bit of time into studying the manual and putting in some practice. Results - excellent.
Believe me...this thing ain't that easy to use. Routing apart from "Easy Routing" is horrible (everything is based on a very complex BUS-system). If you want a recording tool for plug-and-play purposes don't go for this one. The same applies to the 880 and the 890. Great internal effects...but that's it.
One more thing, I shortened the song for the video so if you like the tune then hear the original long version at: sound click.com Type in Tunaduck Productions.
I have the VS 880 and I've had it for 12 years. Still works fine but it's not as easy as this guy claims. I've done only one song on it and that was in 1998. I'm just now getting back into it. The one song I did back then (Life Changes) is available on my site. I put it to animation. I'm an amature so be gental. I have improved dramatically in the last twelve years. It's an original song.
I have a VS-840. They are nice, but they are not very easy to use, and you need a few days to get used to it. The guitar input is great. You can get does cheap of ebay, now. So nice to have a standalone non PC bases system.
@blue9z - I have to disagree just a little bit. Once you learn this thing it is VERY simple to use, expecially compared to some of todays boards... I sometimes pass up my newer equipment and use this old thing just because I always get such a good sound. The only draw back of this thing is the damn zip drive. If this thing had a hard drive I would use it much more.
is this one of those gay porns?

The Vs-840 is a really good workstation. All bass and guitartracks (expect of the
solo electricguitar) are recorded with this machine in our song "Der letzte Schranz"
Also a lot of effects were used in the preproduction. I´m really happy with this
workstation. Bought it in 1999 and sometimes I use this machine also today.
So listen to "Der Letzte Schranz" and you´ll hear 70% of Vs-840

So do they have the technology now to rectify that?
If so, I reckon they should relaunch it.
Although I spose having said that, everyone uses flash drives, hard drives and ipods now.
and I guess CD's are gradually being faded out now.

Endorsements - I get work from a pro musician!

Yes i agree, i meant at first some of the features are a bit confusing. It's a very solid piece of equipment, and 8 tracks is usually enough.
