Bach makes a single instrument sound like an entire orchestra playing together...and Szeryng brings this to the fore in the colours on all the upper as well as the lower notes so well and so balanced -- this is true polyphony!
He is a legend and his Chaccone does not belong to this world.
This man's recordings of these pieces changed my life 30 years ago. It's nice to know that he continues to change lives after all these years. I nearly bet him, having befriended the family he lived with in Mexico City, but before I could make it back he had passed away. But he has profoundly affected my own musicianship, and to him I'll always be grateful for teaching me about the real master: Bach. His playing is beautiful, intelligent, and controlled, but on the edge. Simply wonderful.
In my opinion, the clearest, most intelligent and refined intrepretation of the Chaconne. The bowing articulation, intontation and above all control of time put Mr. Szerying in a call of his own.
Incredible- I just performed this. I was proud after the applause, then I get home and listen to this which is not even live and feel like I did nothing.
@Imachedel I know how inadequate one can feel when one hears the great masters play, but I do not believe that you did nothing. if your playing allowed even one person to hear the incredible beauty of this piece, you accomplished something important. The world needs more of that!
I agree with @skoulikaki731 and would add that aside from being technically flawless Szeryng's interpretation has what is lacking in many virtuosos: musicality and refined sentiment.
I wonder why this half only has 2752 views? Two thirds of those people who listened to 1st half didn't know it's not yet finished?? This is too beautiful a piece to miss the second half of it...
It's hard to find words to describe exactly how wonderful this performance is; it is simply the best! And the way he plays the passage that starts at 5:09 ... completely out of this world.
This Ciaccona is really amazing. I was very lucky at 10 yrs old, i studied Bach First sonata and Ciaccona with Szering and was one of the most important experiences in my entire life. Great violinist and man. This is the only way to play Bach, not immature us Vengerov of Hahn, and with the ugly sound of Kremer!!!I listen another fantastic Ciaccona live from Uto Ughi, you can still hear the final D in the hall today after three years!
Yes, such an ending - Bach the provides that final solitary D, and Szeryng approaches it with no unnecessary trill or exaggerated vibrato. It reverberates in isolation as it fades - the final voice of a musical statement that is perhaps best described as 'celestial'.
How lucky we are to have all these choices, to actually hear some glimmer of what these greats thought. I am very happy.

I suppose comparatively I did do nothing.
Szeryng was my teacher's teacher.

Agreed! Szeryng and Milstein are the finest Bach recordings ever made. And not even edited like the recordings today.
