At 6:07 you left out one of he best quotes in the movie! "A whole squadon lost.Thirty brave souls.". The movie made the Japanese look more admirabel and honorable then th Americans a lot of scenes. I always liked this Pacific Theater based war movie, but it makes me feel sick when it comes to the American dialouge. It's campy and no one talks like that! Especaily sailors in the middle of the one of the biggest battles in the war!
@nolifemerc What protection! A two inch piece of class? A bullet from a Zero could go through the engine, the pilot, the pilots seat, you and out the rest of the fulsalage. The 7.7 mm, we all know there was no protection for the 20 mm rounds. Of course I'm sure you're refering to the Devastator, an aircraft that was obsolete before the war started. They where easily shoot down with AAA, or any fighter. I wouldn't look foraward to flting into battle without escorts in one of those!
Actually, the action is a mish-mash of scenes from several movies, "Battle of Britain", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", and "Explosion over the Pacific." Plus, it used actual combat footage.
As I understand it, very few, if any, action scenes were shot for the movie.
Maybe because the all-star cast had such huge salaries, the rest of the film had to made on the cheap.
And the guy who said, "they creamed us" was a very early appearance by Tom Selleck.
Hot damn the scene starting at 7:23 is still just as gruesome as I remember it. The screaming and the superb burn makeup make for a spine-tingling scene.
@SpenzOT That is a hell of a scene; when looking at WWII footage of planes being engulfed in flames after being hit, I've always cringed at the thought of what those pilots must have gone through.
@TheBullizback Yep, the aircraft at 5:40 was a Hellcat; I think it was the closest thing in the footage the filmmakers could find to a Devastator ditching in the ocean.
The B-17 at 2.35 making a one-wheel up landing was footage from Tora-Tora-Tora. During production of that film, one of the vintage B-17s radioed in to say that one of his wheels was stuck. The film's director got a camera-man to film the landing and then incorporated it into the script.
@Rocky54167 The extra scenes were added to 'Midway' for the TV-version of the film. The extra scenes included a sequence depicting the Coral Sea battle and, also, a couple of scenes showing Charlton Heston's character Matt Garth at home with his wife. The TV version also has Garth with constricted movement in one of his hands due to an injury suffered at Pearl Harbour and this injury causes the fatal crash at the end of the film. The TV-version has never been released on dvd.

@USMC17751 Actually, no. All of these newsreels are from Midway. But the film producers probably decided to add a few Tora Tora Tora clips in.

Funny how Ensign Gays 'Devastator' (AT6 Texan) turns into a Nakajima and then into a Hellcat when it crashes. Useless.

@Rocky54167 Sorry, I don't. I only have the regular DVD copy. And there is no deleted scenes on it.
