But that’s not your fault, we learn from our surroundings just like if you grew up in England where there’s accents you would speak with one to. When my family immigrated to North America I was very young, so I never learned to speak or write in my first language properly (even though I attended a multicultural language school on Saturdays) and had to learn English instead as primary. I have been called whitewashed by almost all my friends and all my cousins actually & the reason was because i dated a brown christian & went to church a few times because i respect all cultures. I don't understand how going to church for service & conferences makes me a white wash . I respect all cultures i may not know as much punjabi as them but i do have a passion for bhangra and respect it way more than any of them but yeahh thats my storie :P

I have been called whitewashed by my own cousin. She said that I wasn't part of my culture and that I don't care about it. I personally think that compared to other brown people I know, I am a very good child. (Other then hanging out with guys, and lying that i'm with girls) She is 10 years older than me and I told her that you are my influence so then why didn't you influence me with my culture, if you think I don't respect it? She is older then me and I do respect her, and I will.

I can see why ppl would call you whitewashed from the way you speak because like you said you speak like the ppl in your town and your town is mostly white. But that’s not your fault, we learn from our surroundings just like if you grew up in England where there’s accents you would speak with one to. That being said, the way you talk shouldn’t define how “brown” you are so I don’t think you should let it bother you. Personally I prefer a guy who speaks with grammar and punctuation anyways.

Really, it's all about the environment one grows up in or chooses to adapt to. It has nothing to do with despising another culture. Do you know how many European immigrants came to the U.S. and chose to learn English, whereas their first language was Italian, French, Spanish, German, etc.?
Just because they learned English, and spoke like everyone else didn't mean they hated their original culture!

When my family immigrated to North America I was very young, so I never learned to speak or write in my first language properly (even though I attended a multicultural language school on Saturdays) and had to learn English instead as primary. I guess for this reason some people consider me whitewashed. Thumbs up if you are in a similar situation. I hope I'm not alone on this... (lol)

I've had people call me white washed...not as much as my cousins get called it...but yea...I'm as brown as can be...I eat with my hands...I prefer Rice and curry, or kothu roti...I know what's goin on back home...I fart like wherever whenever...I too wash my bum after poops...annnnd...i speak my language whenever I can do so without being laughed at for trying...proper diction when speaking English, and proper attire makes you a brown person who has adapted minimally to western culture!!!

People have called me whitewashed because I'm not a fan of the food, probably because I have had to eat it almost everyday for 17 years...just gets boring after a while. On the other hand, I have called other people whitewashed because they do not respect their culture and they try to hide or ignore the fact that they are brown. When you honestly can't admit you are brown you're whitewashed; otherwise calling someone whitewashed when they are aware they are brown is simple ignorance.

people call me white-washed as well because I don't swear every 2 seconds and I listen to music other than rap :O God forbid I listen to coldplay or radiohead...seriously! Also, like you, I live in an area outside of the typical punjabi community and can't really speak Punjabi that well. While I understand that knowing how to speak punjabi is really important in order to keep the culture alive, my parents don't speak Punjabi to me, and ppl get weirded out that my parents don't have dip accents!

I just want to mention, your accent is "white" in the sense a canadian/white dude would speak. The faux-hawk isn't a brown thing, it is a white-washed brown guys attempt to be brown. Basically, its the way you never say Punjabi words. like when people from the UK speak to each other, although we speak fluent English (of course) we often bring in Punjabi half way through a sentence.
