I really enjoyed this video of Paul White and Marie Bryant. I came about this video by accident while reading up on Ms. Bryant who I've learned was an amazing dancer! The music ain't bad either! Duke Ellington was a genius!
I hadn't looked at this comment stream for a long time--didn't think people would be this interested! The historical comments about Marie Bryant are true. This is a soundie made around the time of Jump for Joy, when the band also went into the studio and did two takes on the title song, one with Ivy Anderson and one with the Bronze Buckeroo, who is still singing! As for the scat lyrics, They were written as quoted in the comments here-- I have them on the original lead sheets.
I would love preform this it looks so fun and the choreography man i bet i'd be smiling too much. Still thank you for the up load it was pleasantly enjoyable.
I would venture to guess not. To me this sounds like plain ol' 'scat singing' where they are vocally imitating different instruments from the band, more than it does Slim Gaillard's 'vout' talk where he used real words mixed with jibberish. Often times in Slim & Slam tunes Slim will fire off a 'call' in his vout lingo, and Slam will answer back with a scat embellished 'response.' Scat singing took hold and took off, but 'Vout' seems to have only been a Slim thing .
@funstuff2006 Still sounds like it could go either way, but thanks for sharing your perspective. I'll check out Slim and Slam. Meanwhile, Claquet might have some clarification since his father, Sid Kuller, wrote the lyrics.

The great, cute, vivacious dancer/singer Marie Bryant was an influential dancer that appeared in many films. Gene Kelly and Duke Ellington called her one of the finest dancers. She became a dance director in Hollywood teaching dance to Ava Gardner, Paulette Goddard, Betty Grable, Cyd Charisse, Bob Hope & others. A wonderful singer also who sung in quite a few films. Its sad she's not as remembered as others because she contributed a lot to entertainment. She was a good friend to Lena Horne also.
just because she is light & someone thinks she is beautiful does not mean that darker women aren't beautiful...I think they just meant she is beautiful not compairing her to anyone else....think before you get offended.
Hi, I like your video and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my vid clip of some rare jazz musicians and dance band Leaders cigarette cards, issued in 1936. They include Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and many more.
The singers are Paul White and Marie Bryant, original cast members of the 1941 Revuesical JUMP FOR JOY, produced at the Mayan in Los Angeles. The music is by Duke Ellington, and the lyric by my father, Sid Kuller, one of the driving forces behind the show. Other tunes from the show are its title anthem, Jump for Joy, the blues Rocks in my Bed, the impudent satire Passport from Georgia and the romantic duet Brown Skin Gal in the Calico Gown.
The woman's name in the video is listed as Marie...but the description is Marie. I'm looking for her right name to get some more music. Anyone know her name? Thanks!

Wow...very interesting historical background!! I'd read about Jump for Joy, and it's being so far ahead of its time in 1941.

Simply imagine that this entire song is Paul white having a stroke, and trying to explain to everyone that he needs help.
None of them got it, clearly, so we were gifted with this wonderful song.

Did he enjoy a "real" singing career?
If so what's available?
