louis and marie-antoinette weren't complete assholes. their extravagant lifestyles were mostly a product of their youth, when they were teenagers (being a teen myself, i can understand why they cared little for responsibility).
As they grew older, louis actually became a fairly wise leader and marie-antoinette even set up many charities for the poor. but the damage they dealt to their own image was too severe and it was how history chose to remember them

Why didn't America help the French? America is to fault for their debt, the least they could of done is assist. I do however understand France did retain some enlightenment heavy documents from America such as our constitution. I'm just asking why they didn't assist the country that faught for their independence as much as they did.

@hihowdigut The French revolution took place less than a decade after the American one ended. The newly formed US didn't have the power or resources to wage war with th elikes of the powerful European nations. It did well against the barbary states but that's a different matter. Also, the colonials (well not anymore) were English, they were Americans now, but still English,same language, same accent etc. And this actualy made diplomacy difficult at times.
