Excellent. I tend to paint oil over acrylic (it just makes it sooooo much faster...Usually I will mix a matte gel mixed in with acrylic gel medium (over an ink drawing) and it seems to work pretty well for me...just starting using this technique.
There are so many ways to work with oil, (I don't like working with acrylics, because they tend to screw up brushes almost instantly, but it is the best stuff to use for underpaintings).
What good skills - too bad nowadays some young artist will go around saying that they don't draw/paint/sculpt/film and regard those who do well as simply artisans and craftsmen. Some of these conceptual artists will go around preaching the 'It's the Message, not the Medium' bs and think it is beneath them to draw well but could talk for hours and hours and hours on end about a particular 'Big Idea'. C'mon, all the greats know that both message *and medium mattersequally, no?
I would argue that "thirds" and "halves" are more standard mixes. The 7 part mix was one I never heard of until I was in my 40's and studying oil painting. I first heard the proportions from Richard Schmid on a video, and have subsequently come to understand that it's from the Ralph Mayer Artist's Handbook.
I learned it first from Richard Schmid, and he remains one of my top three favorite painters. I'm not going to re-do the audio track to change that fact though.
Meyer is indeed my primary source,; but I've heard the recipe elsewhere many times -indeed far more often than any other- hence my perception (and admittedly it is only my perception) that it is the most standard.
Pretty much what I think of yours; you're both quite skillfull (all the more impressive in your case if indeedyou began in your forties).
I'm primarily an abstract artist, but I apreciiate technical skill, and found that my abstract work was rubbish until I had mastered traditional techniques.
When I want to, I can draw and paint "realistically" about as well as anyone you care to name, but I'm ever on the lookout for new tips and tricks -which is why I'm here.
@ChadSmith1452 oops. I didn't mean to mislead. I was a commercial illustrator since I was 21 or 22. I never used oils becasue my work demanded speed. So I airbrushed, colored with Prismacolor, etc. It wasn't until I was 42 and my illustration career was dead that I turned to oil and fine art, really studying anyone I liked. I, like you, am always learning, and enjoy talking about the discoveries I find. I also try to credit my sources as best I can.
@ChadSmith1452 I'm very curious about your own paintings. Care to send me a URL? Anyone who claims to paint as realistically as anyone I can name *has* to be amazing, because I can name many realistic painters. I do not consider myself a realistic painter, rather impressionistic.
David is the best! If you are serious about honing your oil painting skills, his Ustream broadcasts are priceless. He also has a sharp wit, which makes the shows very entertaining.
I have not posted in a while, true. But I will again. Right now I am busy with three live broadcasts each week. More info at DaveThePaintingGuy (dot Com) Thanks for your interest.
Great! Thanks for sharing. I use Rembrandt Iron Oxide Red when painting too, it's my favourite colour to paint with because of its intensity. I'm looking forward to more of your vids. They're very helpful.

@drdarrow Why do you call that the "Richrd Schmidt"medium? What you described is the most standard medium there is.
ChadSmith1452 1 year ago
@ChadSmith1452 First, it's Richard Schmid.
Second, you and I differ on the meaning of "the most standard." I suppose we learned differently.
