@nssurge Yes, North Coast Earth First! was primarily focused on saving old growth redwoods and douglas fir forests in Humboldt County, CA. It went on from about 1985-2008; in 2008, the parent corporation, Maxxam, sold Pacific Lumber Co. to the Mendocino Redwood Company, who renamed it "Humboldt Redwood Company." They promised not to cut old growth nor clearcut, and so far they have kept their word. Other groups are working on other projects now, yet that was the essence of NCEF!

I'm sure even Ali G gets a little stinky every now and then. In my experience, people who have spent time in the forest smell like the forest, which isn't all that bad. Just about everyone who does any kind of labor job gets smelly by the end of the work day, and coffee, cigarette, and alcohol breath is pretty bad, too, eh? It was a cheap shot, a lame little insult, yet that's what Ali G does, and nobody really took it, or him, very seriously. We will seriously defend non-violence, though.

I've heard that from other friends from across the ocean. The context in which I was given the name was the Cheyenne River Lakota Reservation, in South Dakota. The full name means "the humble man called 'horse'" and "Shunka," by itself, means "dog." I was told that I was given that name to bear a heavy weight in my lifetime, and I adopted it as my EF! forest name on the night of the day I witnessed the murder of David "Gypsy" Chain, on September 17th, 1998. I think the video was very informative actually, and got a lot of important points across. What I've only just realised after looking at a great many Ali G videos is that actually he is very clever and he tries to draw people out from hiding behind their favorite politically correct slogans etc, and in doing so he paradoxically exalts the level of the argument. I didn't think that was so at first, but now I am sure. You guys are real, so he didn't 'get' you, and it shows.

Thanks so much, and I do agree about Ali G. I was skeptical at first, and then went ahead and rented all of his stuff, so that I could put our interview into some kind of context. After watching everything he has out, I came to the conclusion that he really does get some people who deserve to be gotten, and in such a clever way, keeping a straight face throughout, that I had to have a certain level of respect for his work. I disagree. I believe that the US invasion of Iraq was, and is, all about oil, money, and power. The US funded Hussein, encouraged his violence, and then turned on him, as per the CIA m.o. The US founded Al-CIA-da and the Taliban, funded them, armed them, trained them, and are now using them as convenient trouble-makers in any spot that the US wants to invade next. The violence in the Middle East is all about building empire, and it must stop (that means Pakistan, too, Obama).

Greg King is still involved with the local enviro movement, and Julia is still doing great things in her life. People move on and new people take the torch. Not compared to an ancient old growth redwood tree:) I'm only 33, and I'm one of the oldest people in the crew, so it's not really fair to say that North Coast Earth First! is comprised of "old hippies." We don't discriminate at all, and we have an "anti-oppression" policy that provides specific safeguards against discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, nationality, etc.  As long as you're non-violent, you can be part of this egalitarian movement. Lots of stereotypes out there...

I'm not QQ, just using every opportunity to educate the public about what Earth First! is really about. You'd be surprised at how many people try to put us down as "tree-hugging hippies," and it's important, to me, to let people know how much more is actually going on with revolutionary resistance movements like Earth First! We do have a sense of humor, though, which is why this video is posted in the first place. Earth First!
