What a strange video to put what this great song. A beautiful song from the '60s should have guys cruisin' in a '60s car and showing girls on the beach- not a bunch of paunchy nerds riding around in a little ugly '80s car acting stupid.
As I recall this song was used in a commercial. Don't know if it was for TAB, a diet cola that was produced in the 60's or SEGO, a dietary malted milk drink that came in a can.
Great song, horrible girl watching. Go to miami or NYC in the summer time. This looks like a college campus. Horrible place to see good looking girls.
@quidveritas...Yes, I too have vague memories of a Tijuana Brass/Herb Alpert version of this song. I have searched on You-Tube for it, and I can't seem to find it. I'm not sure how old you are but, do you recall a TV commercial (circa 1974) that featured this tune? I can't seem to recall what product/company they were endorsing. I just remember an attractive woman wearing a dress and running in slow motion while this song played in the background.
Does anyone remember the commercial with the great looking girl in the bikini walking on the beach, no one talking just this music, then at the end it said on the TV screen "One calorie Diet Pepsi Any Questions". Does anyone have that commercial, or know where to get it?
Does it really matter when a sound was created? what I think is that we love it and leave at that! I was once confusing this great band with HERB ALBERT AND THE TJ BRASS another great!
Heard this classic in a club last night & I recognized it right away; had to ask the DJ the title and then said Yeah: "heard that one before" -- This is a song my dad most likely mixed his drink to before a night on the town. Lots of cool versions here on Youtube; this is one of the better ones.
The first time I ever heard this song I was on an airplane coming home from Vietnam in 1967. I guess that's the reason it's always been such a "special" song to me.
alshouse - I would have assumed Herb Alpert as well ! Even the drumwork is IDENTICAL.
I've been studying music like crazy since March and this is for sure - anyone who does something REALLY good is going to be copied.
An Italian name Guido Pistacci is also a dead ringer for Alperst and can SING like Satchmo. The whole world is full of talent.
My channel is one of the most intl on youtube. 3000 songs playlisted by individual artist and year. I JUMPED at the chance to add this to the 1967 list.
I used to think it was Herb Alpert also. HA had a lot of songs out in those days that sounded similar with the trumpets or bugles or whatever they are.
This song brings back nice memories of when I was just a teenager. Now I'm pushing 60.
Man, high school, the summer of love and Hot Ffun In The Summertime... Trippin was groovy and along came the riots in Detroit, Chicago and LA. But music like this takes one back to more pleasant, if not bubble gummy fun times.
Great tune that wonderfully captures the feeling of being on the town in the 60s!
Notice that the vocal version extends the ending of the melody a bit, to accomodate the words: "Each time you hear a loud, collective sigh / They're making music to watch girls by."
This is the only true version that credibly stands the test of time. The Bob Crewe Generation was also involved with Farnkie Valli and the Four Seasons as well.
I have to admit, I prefer the instrumental version of this song. I first heard it during the 60s in commercials and liked it a lot. It was several years, though, before I discovered that this wasn't written for commercials, but as a regular song.
Actually it WAS originally written and recorded as a jingle for Diet Pepsi by Bob Crewe, who's probably best known for his collaboration with Bob Gaudio in writing many of the Four Seasons' hits. The vocal version came later, and has been recorded by Andy Williams and many other artists.
Yes, I remember this record as being played mostly on the MOR/"Adult Contemporary" stations (like WBZ in Boston), not the "Top 40" stations (like WRKO). The diet Pepsi commercial probably ran before and after the 45 had its rise and fall. This is the "real" version, in my opinion; the Andy Williams version was a little lame by comparison. If this had been used as the theme for a James Bond movie, it would have ranked right up there with "Goldfinger" and "Live and Let Die".
This was played allot on KTTR 1490 Rolla Mo. and in the days of the long gone KCLU circa 1965 played there as well. KCLU was Rolla's first AM-FM station.
Results Radio owns both stations today and 103.1FM the old KCLU is Classic Rock.
KTTR is mostly talk radio but..................
Oldies 95.3 FM owned by Results Radio does a fantastic job playing 60's 70's and now some 80's.
I have been trying to get this song in the format at KXMO 95.3 Hopefully they will add this awesome song to it.
This tune was popular when I came home from Vietnam on emergency leave in April of 1967. Being a guitarist my self, I appreciate all the substantition and embellishments of Vice Bell. The song has just a "feel goodness" to it. It's one of my favorites.
I remember this tune from one of the first Diet Pepsi commercials in 1967. I thought this version sounded so much like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, that they must have recorded it.
The old Andy Williams version put to words is surprisingly (not to me though) good.

Good question. You really need to try one. I think the Garbage Plate was voted the fattest food in New York State.

Hmmm I thought Herb Alpert did a version of this. I'm almost sure he did.
Just the same this is a great rendition of a great tune!

Al Hirt did a version of this song. His style is similar to the Tijuana Brass.

Great video with a great song. It shows the exuburence of youth, which for me was about 25 years ago!

GREAT tune. Any station (even oldies) that has a strong rock music lean couldn't stand a chance to play this today.
This song may have come out 2 1/2 years before I was born, but I love it just the same.

A classic record featuring the great studio guitarist Vincent Bell. Has that sunny sound that's sorely missing from today's pop music.

Good posting. Definitely not Herb Alpert. If I remember correctly, Crewe did some earlier work with the 4 Seasons

I remember this tune from one of the first Diet Pepsi commercials in 1967. I thought this version sounded so much like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, that they must have recorded it.

Ah, Bob Crewe? It sounds suspiciously like The Tijuana Brass to me.
stevel738 4 years ago
Sorry, it was not Herb. Many people believed that it was his band, though. Some way, Crewe played this time his stile, but, Who was the composer?
Apurlec 3 years ago
According to ASCAP, The composer was Sidney Ramin, at least for the music. The lyrics...I guess was Tony Velona. Or maybe those are backwards...?
In any case I believe the music was originally written as a jingle for a soda commercial (Diet Pepsi or somesuch).
