I think Stanley was one of a kind! some excellent movies....but it don't change the fact he had his head stuck up his own ass so far he coudn't see day light lol......
Great Ad, though I'm a little confused as to why the room 237 door isn't on the corridoor with the orange patterned carpet that appears to the end of this.
this is soooooo very detailed. I'm even glad there was a Shelley Duvall reference in there because I love her. Wow. Even lovely to see the woman who hands "stanley" the script, I forgot her name damnit...
This is the best commercial ever made! Period! I want to create something similar to this soon. Great commercial of one of my top 10 films of all-time. Thank you British Channel 4. Whoever came up with this idea is brilliant!!!
Aside from the obvious references taken from the actual film, there are many people and things recreated from the actual set. If you watch the 4 part "The making of the Shinning" you will see examples: the ballroom dancers rehearsing, the gentleman in the black sweater with the white bird emblem, the woman who hands over the script, the AD who speaks into the walkie talkie, the camera operators, etc. And, the sets were actually like that, bumped up right against each other.
... I missed this excellent season... how was it? When was it? And what channel was it on? ... also, this was real footage? If it wasn't they did such an excellent job with it; I simply can't tell...
the track is 'natureland' by brazilian DJ Amon Tobin from his album 'Supermodified'. a sensational artist, go buy all his stuff. i think the track uses some samples from the score of 'the shining'
I watched this the other week and, being a huge fan of The Shining, I thought "WTF! How on earth did they do this?" It is superb stuff from, dare I say, channel 4.
it's almost as if they created this advert because they knew that there will be a programme 28 years leater and this would be a good advert for it, so real, i love chanel 4 adverts, they're always amazing.
Arguably the best television trail there has ever been. Ever.
Why? Not only is there an attention to detail that is commendable as there is so much in it, and the fact that it is definitely aimed at followers of the director (anyone who hasn't watched The Shining wouldn't care)it is the only trail I will want to watch again and again as there is so much in it.
Not a fan of using this word but kudos goes to the directors. I only wish they would do that for some of SK's others.
The film itself was projected 1.85:1. Why should this be full frame or 1.66:1? The fact that The shining was shot 1.37: 1 means nothing since it was always intended to be shown 1.85:1
But when it was projected in 1:85:1 it was actually cropped. If it was projected in 1:37 than we would actually see more of the picture frame as "Kubrick intended."
Everything I have read about this points to the aspect ratio Kubrick intended to be 1.85:1. In fact, since the mid 50's most movies shot commercially have been projected 1.85:1, partly in due to show more of the image than television pictures which had been making inroads in the entertainment industry. Most non-anamorphic movies are routinely framed with a safety area between the framed-for picture and the edge of the negative. 1.37:1 is by most accounts an obsolete standard since the late 50's.
TCM should borrow this for a Kubrick film fest.

was the steadicam following the tricycle actually mounted like that, though? I figured it was handheld.
clashingtyrants 10 months ago
@clashingtyrants why would you think it was handheld? the camera glides along, often low to the ground.

maybe room 237 is in a different corridor
MissMetallicaMisfit 2 years ago
It isn't; in the film it's quite clear room 237 is in that corridoor.

oh yeah! of course... sorry, i haven't watched it in a while.

In the book it was room 217.

well in the movie they changed alot of stuff from the book so why didn't they keep the movie like the book ?

My only complaints is that it should have been shot in 1:66 or FULL SCREEN instead of what appears to be 1:85.
Still great ad though!
