  • split screen seems to be the most logical and easiest explanation for the trick. The laser explanations are a bit out there.

  • ...when he says 23....watch the camera shake...and the left hand ball rise.....

  • ....when he says 23...watch the camera shake...and the left hand ball....

  • as in the balls move when Darren pushes n.2 and push 23 up?

    omg... pushing objects!

  • No camera tricks - no lasers - no flux capacitors - but just a simple trick. where he screwed up is he wrote 2 on the white board but the ball was printed 02..

  • Split-screen. Very simple method, but flawed because the hidden technician bodged the left ball (No. 39 when turned around.)

  • thats coz he pushed the first pall which forced the 3rd 1 to push up

  • okay the split screen concept is what i believe the technique he used.

see how when he switches off the tv?

he seems to take a small step back unconfidently to allow more time for everything to be set up.

then when he reads out the lotto numbers

he also unconfidently says the jackpot number, just as if it was the first time he heard the numbers.

    wich is true.

    well thats my oppinion ^_^

  • Of course it's a camera trick. He would have done it in front of a live studio audience otherwise. Notice how he doesn't cut to the rear camera at all during the trick, that's because the supposed free holding camera man has now mounted this on a tripod and realtime camera shake effects are playing, allowing for the split screen trick. Don't forget an illusionists tricks are all quite simple really it's just the way they get dressed up. He dressed this one up so well. Well done Derren. Good fun!

  • HQ my arse. Betamax would give better picture quality. Fucker.

  • its was uploaded in response to the uber low

quality ones that were available after the show.

ps betamax was better than vhs, quality wise.

  • Part 1:

This is how he does it! It's simply a split-camera technique. So just a camera trick in the end!

If you look closely on a big screen you will see that the six white balls throughout the first part of the broadcast are all in an even line and ironically there is a line of black bricks on the wall behind which acts like a ruler.

  • Part 2:

Now after the last ball has been dropped if you look very carefully you can see that the ball on the left end has become slightly raised against the others and against the black bricks on the wall behind.

When Derren Brown turns the tray around you can clearly see that the ball on the end (now the right end) which is number 39 is slightly higher than the others as it has not been placed in the tray properly.

  • Part 3:

Therefore the balls at the end of the broadcast are NOT the same set as the ones at the start.

So split-camera effect (with artificial camera-shake) and a magician's assistant (with NO studio audience present) are the solution.

The arrival at the prediction is therefore irrelevant as the balls have simply been swapped during the live show.

  • Part 4:

The apparent semi-success of the 24 members of the group predicting previous lotteries is another independent scam to give some sort of false explanation for the prediction.

So TWO scams together and the whole thing nothing more than a conjuring trick to mislead and misdirect people - and play on their greed and gullibility!

Type in derren brown's lottery trick - possible solution to see Internet Animator Cyriak show you how its done!

  • Seem's reasonable.

  • there no doubt its split screened, look at the floor throughout and u can see it jolt

  • watch any dvd on a big flat screen etc and u will see the same jolting on dvds and films. its just compression of the video that does it. not video effects

  • Do you know what i dont get, correct me if im wrong. There Were ballas in there before yes?

Well why dont we see them move, even if it was a slit screen, wouldnt we see the balls move :P

    Confusing stuff

  • uhhh yeah if he really had the power to predict the numbers he wouldnt make a damn video about it. hed be making out with his new cash

  • Comment removed

  • "attractive?" Are you hard for him? Nice fat arm by the way.

  • Dan browne is an illusionist and not a faker (or fu-ker as some of you might like to believe) - no special effects -no split screens but just a basic magic trick - the stand is the magic prop - everyone get the sh-t out of your eyes and you will be able to see more clearly- dont be like sheep and follow the the masses- try thinking for yourself once in your life - you bunch of idiots . They do say the lottery is an "idiot tax" -

  • Of course he didn't really predict the numbers. If he did, he would have let the numbers face the camera before the draw took place, because by that time it would have been to late for anyone to have used those numbers for themselves.

    This is so fake.

  • Oh Fuck Off So Fake you can see the split screen lin nxt to the balls and look at the first ball it moves up a inch you prob cant see it on this vid but watch it on another vid and see for your self

  • 'Stupid tricks' like this are why Derren Brown is a very rich, successful, attractive and intriguing man - and why all his critics (including the general public) are nobodies.

  • there are documents preventing magicians from grossly profiting from stunts like this

  • If he could predict the lottery he still wouldn't be doing stupid magic tricks to make money.

  • lol definatley true XD

  • Maybe "stupid magic tricks" are his passion?

Maybe he would feel his life has been unfulfilled if all he does is predict the lottery for a living?

Maybe he likes being a famous illusionist?

    You're an idiot mate.

  • making money seems high on his agenda

  • work it out he never at one point said you can do it to, he said you can try to do it, this doesnt mean it will work, there was obviously more to his method than he showed or the lottery wouldnt allow it - u know, thousands of people with a way to win the lottery, fuking hell its not hard and if uve ever seen his show or been to a live one ud know that hes an absolute genius anyway.

  • He's a faker. He isn't a genius and he didn't correctly predict those numbers.

  • wow. you can get a 14 year old who has an interest in magic tricks to perform this trick to you.

its the old "pick five cards and i've already predicted them and put them in a sealed envelope" routine. its amazing how much is recycled in magic to make it look like a new trick... it'll be fun to see a new trick be performed one day...

  • Totally agree with you.

  • this is the wrong video wierd..listen to what the balls are called out

  • Was kinda dissapointed with his explanation. It means all the events explanations are gonna be fixed, i was looking forward to them too. Also he is making ppl believe in false science and stuff which kinda seems ironic after he was in that thing with dawkins.

  • It goes against every thing he`s ever said and done. And he outright lied to us when he said he would show us how we could do it,he shouldnt have said that!

  • be careful! dawkins is verging on a pseudo-science crackpot just like derren!

  • Pseudo-science? Are you serious? Crackpot? I know it might be a bit hard to follow an intelligent man's thinking, but labbelling Richard Dawkins a crackpot? Try reading a book, buzzflywhatever. You know, with letters and stuff. You may learn something. That would be nice, don't you think? Good luck.

  • My channels attract all manner of trolls

Scientology, BNP & all-sorts of loonies.

Dawkins is okay in my book

  • i agree that dawkins is "okay", but he verges on pseudo-science by popularising one view point as science, the point of science, as i have already stated, is debate, discussion and questioning.

only after something has been thoroughly ridiculed can it be considered a worthy scientific paradigm. dawkins, however, accepts no ridicule.

  • dawkins claims to be a scientist but accepts no ridicule or questioning, that is completely against the fundementals of science; science tests its worthiness in debate and questioning, if dawkins rejects this it is psuedo-science.

if you'd like to discuss some theoretical physics (ie quantum mechanics) with me, i'd be more than willing, it's one of my stronger fields =P

  • obvious that hed of come up with that mumbo jumbo, i liked it when he said you can think its some technolgy trick if you want, well i bloody well do ,BIG TIME!!

  • id been telling people this would happen.

    its been done twice before.

    2002 in spain

    1993 in israel

  • I might believe him if he would have bought the winning ticket.

  • You know, the part where he calls it a "trick" is a dead giveaway that it's a ... trick.

  • wow! you mean he can't actually tell the future?!

  • 1.the camera films the the scene twice, once live and once previously , what your seeing is a split screen live on the right side and not live on the left.

2.the camera is controlled in exact the same movements for both shoots by a machine, and in exact same lighting

3.they place the winning balls just after they are announced,

4.they then cut to the ball side live as soon as the balls are placed. if its exact same movement on the camera and lighting , you'd not notice the split.

  • Spot on mate. I tried something similar when I was messing around with camera and after effects a couple of years ago. Difference is I had to add the shake and split fx in post production. Here he has the technology to do it live. Look how robotic the camera shake looks. Quite obvious really. The trick here is that the timing and performance had to be spot on. That would have taken alot of work. Well done Derren, nice misdirection (another word for trick or lie) lol

  • Real-time motion tracking software exists, and is used by CH4, ITV and BBC. A demo can be seen by searching youtube for:

'Derren brown lottery camera shake revealed'

  • it is a trick cuz otherwise he wldnt be able to do it :)

  • Forgot to mention - in the pre-recorded beginning only the TV screen is super-imposed on the studio. So TV screen ""appears" live but Derren is NOT live for begining part

  • Protip: his "explanation" is going to be bullshit. It is going to refer to some mindfuck powers of his, and, as usual, people will believe him because his explanation of his powers will be all sciencey and psychological rather than magical.

  • OK PPL LISTEN TO THIS COS THIS WILL EXPLAIN HOW HE DID IT Everyone has been looking at this the wrong way around. The first part of the video is pre-recorded. Look how Derren doesn't respond to any drawn balls. See how his timing is off commenting on bonus ball. However ... after he goes woahhhhhhhhhh ...... then his voice cuts in live, then it switches to him live drawing the numbers he's just heard live on the board. This is the simple fast and easy way to do it. Go watch the clip again.

  • hes great

  • What is all this green screen crap goin round? OF COURSE ITS NOT BLOODY GREEN SCREEN. He can't come on tonight and say "Oh, i used green screen, im a complete fraud" because that will ruin whatever reputation he has built up. This man is far too intelligent to simply resort to computer trickery. Though, it will be interesting to find out what method he has used. Good luck to him in all his future exploits.

  • Derren Brown > Jesus

I can't wait to see how he did this, in a few hours.

  • YOU WONT FIND OUT ffs

  • WTF are you talking about? He's said he'll be explaining this tonight, on channel 4 at 9:00pm.

  • hehe, give yourself a slap.

magicians rarely, if ever give honest

    explanations for their tricks.

Do you think you can copy what he says

    tonight & win the lotto?

  • No, I don't. I'm not a moron and have never said that. I'm just intrigued by the trick.

And you've obviously never watched Derren before as you'd know he usually gives an *insight* as to how he performed alot of his work.

  • "obviously never watched Derren"

    *insight*

    11minutes ago you said "explaining"

now its an "insight", make up your mind.

  • I'm curious as to how he performed this. I'm waiting to see his EXPLANATION... that's all. Maybe insight was the wrong word, but seriously, why are you even bothering to argue with the fact that I'm waiting to see what he has to say tonight, about the events of Wednesday? (no pun intended) There's just no need in it. :S

  • its NOT a new trick.

afaik its been done twice before.

    Spain 2002

    Isreal 1993

  • I didn't say it was, though I've never seen it before. Maybe he did it a different way to the others. We'll find out when he gives us an EXPLANATION. ; )

    Let's drop this now, though.

  • well?

how do you think he "done" it?

  • I haven't watched it yet. I sky+'d it.

  • honestly, its a complete & utter waste of time.

    predictably annoying & uber vague

  • if you look he pushes the last ball down its only slight but he does touch it more than ther other balls !! :)

  • Knowing Derren Brown as a superb mentalist, he will reveal how the trick is done. He doesn't have to rely on camera tricks, because he thinks of so many other possibilities.

If you think this is a camera trick, I suggest you watch Derren Brown's "The System" and watch as he follows a woman he wins a horse race every time she listens to his choice.

  • he either be a freak or he can be tricking us. but if he can do it , he could of hve been a billionaire by now HELLO people!!

  • precisely

  • 1:12 look at ball 23 ppl!!!! ffs

  • i don't get it? what do you mean

  • it moves up showing that it was camera trick

  • its because the balls only just fitted in and when he hit the number 2 ball it pushed it up as it didnt fit well

  • no way m8! am sorry but look at the way is strangely comes down!!!

  • watch in high quality and you can see the ball is being bumped while he is touching them. It's only sliding.

  • derren employed some computer hackers to put the numbers on the video of the balls in real time. its basically a green screen trick. while its amazing he didnt predict anything and basically is looking at blank balls. they can even be moved as the computer knows where each balls is at any time and can draw the image properly.derren is doing nothing here. derren uses cheap tricks and pretends they are mind tricks. he usually doesnt admit it though. friday will be interesting.

  • he's an illusionist, i wonder what that means...sort it out frank

  • sorry the lottery draw WAS'NT drawn live. thought i point this out. it was my mistake by typing. I do appolise!!!!!!!!!

  • The lottery draw was drawn live!. It was drawn 5 minutes or so before so Camelot could text him the numbers so he could pick the correct white balls and turn the around.

THEN darren Brown went on air and did his stuff.

The pre-recorded draw was shown on all UK tv's including his. Turning from channel to channel didnt really matter.

At the end, he turned the white balls around the same ones that was drawn making believe it was him who predicted them. The camera man was part of the act!

  • that a very interesting theory but if that was true there would be no point making a "how did he do that" show tomorrow concidering it would be such an anticlimactic unveiling leaving people dissapointed. i think mutatedmonty's video hit the nail on the head, all his points add up perfectly

  • the BBC wouldn't do that you prune

  • y r the numbers on darrens balls pointing upwards? and not directly facing the camera?

  • maybe, he acctually done it, and like all you's are wrong. lmao.

  • u shud see his next series called Derren Brown: Full of Shit

  • anyone actually listened?

at the end he says "tune in friday, where i will explain this and will show you how you can do it too"

maybe wait until then... and unless you have a green screen a camera, a lot of time and money, a nice computer to edit it all on... you cant do the "split screen"

    there is one live feed

    nothing else.

watch on friday and maybe you might learn something......

    x

  • watch on friday, yes.

learn something about how to do this trick, doubtful.

Its been done before, in Spain (2002)

  • its impossible to read the lottery numbers. its bout luck.

  • Watch when he says, "those' and "are", he stops and starts. That's where the transition was made from live. He did this by filming lots of end sequences, at least 152 each day for 365 days to give him the first five numbers, leaving only one ball to trick.

  • he also turns off the TV just before he says it, so it won't interfere with the cuts :)

  • correctomente' :P

  • his eyes look crazy like his has been driven mad from doing so many cut scenes lol .... maybe

  • yeah thats a good trick, like to know how he did it. must be some camera trick going on somewhere

  • look wen he says: "those are the lottery numbers this week" see the transition between those and are?

  • because its all live it does make it more hard to figure out, its nasty one!!!

  • i hear that. you might have something there. i just don't see derren brown resorting to camera trickery. its just not his style

  • Comment removed

  • this is done one of 2 ways. first, a simple split screen camera trick. the technical guys can freeze one half of the screen and his assitant puts the balls as they come out. second is radio controlled number balls. his assistant dialled in the numbers as they come out. he probably spent a year getting people who know how to do it. he might be running out of ideas but he is a genius.

  • How did this mofo do it?

    He's too dam good.

  • If he thought he was going to win then why didn`t he enter the lottery?

  • because hes band from stuff like that. If he entered the lottery every week then he would have alot of money. Thats why hes band from casinos and gambling, because he reads peoples minds (knows what they are going to do next)

  • i dont really believe that

  • Comment removed

  • Erm.... pathaanx ....

Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code are books by the VERY popular writer, Dan Brown, not Derren Brown.

This was a camera trick. It was VERY well done, but not quite perfect. You can see a change in the balls if you watch closely. Like I said - VERY well done.

  • sounds like he has brainwashed you into believing he is a mind bender. what a load of bollocks. surely he could give the lottery numbers to a freind such as yourself and you could share the money..wake and smell the coffee you fool

  • he had a meeting with camelot(the people who run the lottery) about his stung and they told him he couldnt reveal the numbers before they were drawn on bbc and camelot banned derren from buyin a ticket

  • seriously, why do people keep putting him down. Im a friend of his, and when i say this, i really mean it. Derren is not a faker. He does the real stuff. It takes him a very long time to work out the stuff, but its NOT fake.

  • Comment removed

  • I want Derren Brown to try to predict the result on his C4 show on Friday then present, live in the studio, the actual lottery draw on Saturday.

Then we'll see if he can REALLY truely predict the lottery or if there was some sort of camera/editing trickery going on in this video - I expect the latter.

  • lol clearly he cant actually do it, think about it, its not possible. and hes not confessing to have special psychic powers either and you'll see that on friday.

the trick comes after the numbers come out. you have to rememebr he's an illusioinist and a showman, he's not claiming to be able to do this all the time. that shouldnt take anything away from how good it was though in convincing people

  • I kept replaying the bit from 0.45 to 0.52. I can see the camera stops shaking for 2 secs but the video quality isn't good enough to tell if anything has moved in that time.

  • Actually "if you do the sums" youd realise that 13 years is closer to length of time to record each seperat scenario....and he would have looked a hell of a lot younger in some of those vids ahaa

  • Watch at 0:48 - the camera stops shaking for 2 seconds. When it comes back the balls have moved slightly.

  • oh yeah obv derren brown is going to spend a whole hour on friday to try and explain how he pulled off an elaborate camera trick with lazers and dodgy camera men FUCKING SPACKERS i wish people would use there commen sense to try and figure things out

  • eeeeenit

  • Old footage spliced together.

  • Lies.

  • aaahhh wtf? he drives me crazy!!! i want his powers :)

  • Why is the camera so shaky? I think there's a split screen/ or a green screen.

  • If you actually watched this live, you would see that the 1st camera man didnt have a tripod, and was holding it free hand. Although I love Derren Brown, and want to believe him, but hes an illusionist, that says it all, its an ILLUSION.

  • @1:03 the balls are not in a straight line, they've been laid down very quickly

  • maybe its because when he turns the stand round they all move? you can see the balls are only in the rack very loosley
