One of the residents said that wintertime is the best season to really see the smoke. And I was not disappointed! :) Another aspect of visiting the town in winter is that one can see the evidence of the heat from the fire along 61 and Hammie's Hill as I mentioned. Now a major blizzard will cover the clear portions of 61 and Hammie's Hill. But it will also melt much faster. The warm ground on a 13F/-9C day was the second most impressive aspect of Centralia next to the smoke.
If I recall correctly, the road was open to traffic, but detours were put in place eventually. At the time I could drive it, the crack was shorter. The road was buckled off to the side. It has been a long time since I've driven there; that crack is huge now, as seen in your video.
The road fell apart in about two weeks time. The road started to buckle and the dip in it got worse and worse. Part of the road collapsed under the weight of a semi truck and the rear wheels got stuck.... the big crack in the video.
Do you have asthma? You coughed a high-pitched cough a few times while narrating. My town's somewhat famous for toxic gas, and i have asthma, and i get sick before other people do on bad-air days. What i'm saying is this, if you have asthma, please be careful in places like Centralia. I like your vids, but please stay safe!
I do not have asthma, thank goodness! As far as my cough, I always did have a high pitched cough ever since I was a kid. My pediatrician said that was simply because I hold my mouth wide open when I cough. Plus, since I was the only person around wherever I was at, I saw no need to cover my mouth either. Yeah...I know... :)
I had the exact same problem with heat. My 8mm hardley picked anything up.

I've driven that road, before that crack grew so large. It's so sad, but it's part of the anthracite history.

When you drove 61, was the road still open to normal traffic? If so, did the crack just form yet and was the road as heavily buckled as in my video?

It's also okay to emit SO2 and methane when nobody's around, heh heh heh. Well, for you. Girls don't do that.
