This dude plays so well and you're fucking around about Africa
Yes the quality is BAD! but do you even know when it was recorded. I don't so I
don't complaine. I don't know how many people are in that audience but did you ever played live in front of a crowed like this and you played your guitar like a beast even if one string suddenly break? I have much respect for him that he was so cool and just kept on going in that momant.
I have never had anything bad to say about Steve before but this just seemed crazy to me....It seems like that he would have at least finished the song before changing out......I have broke strings before while gigging and had to finish a whole set before swapping out.....if I can do it and I am miles away from him in expertise then I know he could have!
@MrJbinchrist It's an Ibanez with a floating trem... the whole guitar goes out of tune by a mile when you break a string. If it was a Tele I'd be with you!
@thisisguitar1 I owned an Ibanez once with a tremolo like that and it popped strings left and right. For some reason though it never dropped out of tune when it popped. I guess mine was weird...lol.
@MrJbinchrist You must have be a very lucky man! :-) You can blag a solo, although it's hard, but a chord just sounds horrid! I just hit the whammy pedal and a few fx on... make an 'art-noise' solo.
@thisisguitar1 I don't know anything about "luck".....I sold the instrument because I got tired of spending money on strings for it....I have always preferred Fender anyway....I bought the Ibanez because it was a really good deal....I picked it up for like $450 or so...it has been so long that I really do not remember the exact price!
@teramasz nothing wrong with africa he was probably trying to point out that 90% of africa astill lives in the dark ages with no electricty no running water no food no jobs over population no infastructure very few schools and alot of them still practise black magic/vodoo and other shamanistic crap that has been proven to be complete jibberrish/nonsence. iv been to africa 3 times elephant hunting the place needs help.
@teramasz ...It has terrible socio-economic conditions, which, aside from more important ramifications, means the likely absence of HD-ready camera equipment. You are kidding, right? You do know of Congo...right?
@5F1NGERDP lol. A couple weeks ago airports in Israel had to shut down due to pollution from North Africa. More than 90% of South Africa's electricity is generated from the combustion of coal that contains approximately 1.2% sulfur and up to 45% ash. Coal combustion can lead to particulate matter in the air, as well as contribute to acid rain. Also due to all the mining going on in South Africa and poor sewage they have some of the worst water pollution on the planet. Nice try though
@TheWoodish when you break a string on certain tremolos the entire tuning of the guitar goes to shit, he was able to get it in key by adjusting the tension of the strings with the whammy bar.......most people would just bug out, he kept it going.
@TheWoodish -_- Floyds only stay in tune when the springs' tension in the back of the guitar matches the tension of all the strings.. so if one string breaks, you lose tension, which adds slack to all the other strings, thus making them all go out of tune. Notice he just played that whole run ON ONE STRING. Thats because they went out of tune!
@KevinKoolx that's . too much .... u mean .... those 10% include... SLASH .. .jimi hendrix ? kirk hammett ? zakk wylde ? randy rhoads ? david gimoure ? so many people in 10% ?
There's a couple of tone-deaf plonkers that haven't spotted that the entire period between 0:08 to 0:35 is being played with a broken string, you can hear everything go out of tune at 0:08 thanks to how floating bridges work, and Vai within the limits of human ability, pulls everything back in tune by holding down the whammy bar while playing his solo. Nice bit of skill, there, and a lot of balls required to even attempt that never mind pull it off.
hot damn, he recovered good from that one...happened to me once on stage, it was extremely embarrassing....luckily i could borrow a friends guitar to finish the gig
vai fucking recovered you poofters. lets see you have that shit happen without losing it in a solo. By the way, with a floating tremelo all the strings go out of tune if one of them breaks because the bridge is no longer balanced. Think about that before you open your stupid mouth.
Remember that breaking a string on a floating bridge ruins the tuning of the other strings as well, so he had to compensate for that by bending all the notes slightly too.
what the fuck was this, it wasnt even genius he just changed his guitar like any other guitarist would do what is so good about it and what is so good about steve vai
@timmay301 what he's a good guitarist but he's missing one thing called a soul, when i look at steve vai play guitar i dont see anything in him and i look at buddy guy and he has everthing, now buddy guy was a genius when he broke his guitar string he started singing about his broken guitar string until his other guitar came out.
@timmay301 no he's a souless peice of shit thers nothing that exciting about him like you would see in someone like jimi hendrix. and im not saying he's a bad guitarist but it just seems like he try's to play as fast as he can, any great guitarist would say that fast guitar solo's suck same with fuckin eddie van halen.
@epiphonelespaul4 if jimi hendrix was here, he would tell you to stop ripping on great guitar players. there's no competition, its just taste and preference. if you don't like vai................. that's fine with all of us. Did you even watch the vid titled 'for the love of god' by steve vai? even if you dont like genre, you would have to admit that there is soul i it.. narrowminded is what u are.
@epiphonelespaul4 I tried to reply and I must have spent 30 min writting and deleting stuff, not sure how to reply. Steve and Eddie definitely have "immense souls" and talents and they both are amazing guitarists. The speed doesn't matter at all.
wow why so many dislikes I can clearly see the string pop and it's amazing that he stays in key compensating with the tremelo. How man people actually get to practice that haha. Steve Vai is the man. However this is the exact reason I stay away from tremelo's, because I couldn't have pulled it off.
@Monkdaddy Yer Tremelo Bridges are good but there Risky to have when doing live performances and if you are going to get a Guitar with a Tremelo get a Quality one no a cheap peace of crap the breaks after 5mins haha...
When he plays on Argentina on the Fire Garden Tour, when play For The Love Of God he brokes one string, change the guitar, broke another string, changes his guitar again and with the third he gave us one of the most better and angry solo I never heard in my life.
There's a broadcast radio around the net with that moment, I still have the ticket but I don't remember the exact date.
C'mon... I cannot feel to be so good at guitar to judge a man who is able to make a guitar not only sound good but speak!!!I Probably I and many people here would just cry if this should happen!!!
Steve Vai actually uses "trem setters" on his guitars. It's a counter tension device installed in the back of the guitar where the Whammy springs are. While his tremolo does float, the trem setter keeps his other strings in better tune when he bends notes....and I suspect, his guitar doesn't get near as whacked out of tune when he snaps a string. FYI!
@MrCkblade21 actually the trem setter will keep the string in tune when you break the string only if your in the "only dive mode" steve could abviously pull the bar up
@99chrisjc False. The trem-setter is not a "blocked" tremolo that you're referring to. It puts counter tension on the vertical plate of a floating tremolo system. I doubt its enough counter tension to keep the guitar in perfect tune when a string breaks, but it won't go nearly as far out of whack. The primary benefit is improved intonation when bending strings. If memory serves, Vai had 2 tremsetters installed on both his FLO and EVO Ibanez JEMs. Don't take my word for it....search it
@99chrisjc - Actually, the device Vai uses is called a "backstop"....same principle as the trem setter. Do a search for images of "Vai Guitars tremsetter", and you'll see what im talking about.
@MrCkblade21 ah i thought you were talking about that 2-pin metal bar on the bridge...i have one in my guitar and it has an "only dive" mode which temporarily blocks the trem
I saw this happen to Kerry King (Slayer) Gothenburg, Sweden Big 4. First song in "God Hates Us All" and his string broke near the solo and he used the whammy bar extensively, but really could only play for 20-30 seconds while they got a backup.
@MrBigman001 Yeah, i spent a lon on my bass... 350 euros (with a Korg AX5B multi-effect)... now I'm trying to save money to buy a Jackson or a Warwick.
@ThrashTillDeth679 I have a couple live dvds of hendrix and in one of them i noticed he broke a string at the very beginning of a song... or it might of even been on the previous song, and he still played it perfectly.. not exactly the method steve vai used but just the fact that he had such a good recovery with a broken string
@MrBigman001 it's not the whole where it goes through... it's the bridge's part where the string is raised... but i'll go to someone so i can fix it up... the last time my string broke was in the middle of a concert so we had to end it up a little more earlier before scheduled because i had no backup strings... shame on me! ^^
How did Vai recover from anything? He gave up his guitar and the drummer filled in untill Steve got another guitar, I guess since the video ended before we could see!
Exactly - you didn't even notice anything .... his string broke at 0:10 (that's why it says that in the video) and he managed through it by using the trem throughout his solo. Then he gave the guitar up.
Everyone knows that when a string breaks (when the guitar is equipped with a floating tremolo), the tuning gets all out of whack. Steve made an spontaneous recovery by using the whammy bar to keep it in tune. For all those thinking that Steve's recovery was shit, try and play a 5 string guitar with the tuning all fucked up.
@BVBMilitiaLeader You're a king for saying this. No one here knows anything about that...it's way fucking difficult. I can't do it and I've had to before. I just stopped the show for a bit.
@deucemcallister13 Thanks man. Grown adults don't even know why the person who uploaded this video thought that this was a genius recovery. Im only 13 and I actually took the time to realize why it was such a great recovery. People need to wake up and look at the detail before they judge such an icon like Steve Vai...
@BVBMilitiaLeader Amen dude, that guitar practically became unplayable to most guitarists when that string broke. And I bet if the video's title was different people wouldn't have even noticed anything had gone wrong.
@BVBMilitiaLeader Well fucking said. It is clear that he was constantly monitoring and adjusting the intonation (or lack of) of his notes with both the bar and with his string bending. Noobs need to respect.
@GeneralGalkovski So, can you explain to me exactly HOW you can't whammy one string? If you can't provide a good explanation you will be the one walking through that door :P
@BVBMilitiaLeader yeah ur right Steve is a guitar god .... he knows tricks of da trade .... and he doesn't plays normal tremolo guitar... his tremolo system is the most advanced system ibanez ever made ... he uses his signature guitar and the tremolo system name is Edge Tremolo ..... in edge tremolo system if one string breaks all da other strings remain in tune ;) .....
The sound made me wanna kill myself.

@MrCkblade21 ah i thought you were talking about that 2-pin metal bar on the bridge...i have one in my guitar and it has an "only dive" mode which temporarily blocks the trem
99chrisjc 1 month ago
@MrCkblade21 oh sorry i mistook the tremblock for the tremelno in my guitar

Wen did it break..watched from phn cant see it
Allyinchains 1 month ago
That is pretty awesome.
I saw this happen to Kerry King (Slayer) Gothenburg, Sweden Big 4. First song in "God Hates Us All" and his string broke near the solo and he used the whammy bar extensively, but really could only play for 20-30 seconds while they got a backup.

@TheLydianRocks Or because they had it happen to them and couldn't recover as effortlessly as Vai.

@TheLydianRocks Yeah, the audio skips something fierce here.

@MrBigman001 Yeah, i spent a lon on my bass... 350 euros (with a Korg AX5B multi-effect)... now I'm trying to save money to buy a Jackson or a Warwick.

Didn't even hear him break the string. Dunno why but I didn't catch it. Still a solid video.

i like the video; i don't like the title of the video. :P
xXBurnEmUpXx 1 month ago
It wouldn't go out of tune cause he has a tremolo-stabilizer. Something like a Tremol-No. So it didn't go out of tune. =) He's just steve vai lol

Everyone knows to fix a broken string you just mash the colored button until it goes away.
TheSuperVidBros 1 month ago 80
I've seen Hendrix do that too
TheDilligan 1 month ago
@TheDilligan How? there were no floyd rose trems in Jimi's day.
ThrashTillDeth679 1 month ago
@ThrashTillDeth679 I have a couple live dvds of hendrix and in one of them i noticed he broke a string at the very beginning of a song... or it might of even been on the previous song, and he still played it perfectly.. not exactly the method steve vai used but just the fact that he had such a good recovery with a broken string
TheDilligan 1 month ago
@TheDilligan Oh, I get ya. Cool man.
ThrashTillDeth679 1 month ago
@MrBigman001 it's not the whole where it goes through... it's the bridge's part where the string is raised... but i'll go to someone so i can fix it up... the last time my string broke was in the middle of a concert so we had to end it up a little more earlier before scheduled because i had no backup strings... shame on me! ^^
NakeRtHeRoCkEr 1 month ago
that dude is brilliant! a broken string on a Floyd rose will fuck up the tuning, but Vai kept rocking till the end of his solo!
maxman2324 1 month ago
How did Vai recover from anything? He gave up his guitar and the drummer filled in untill Steve got another guitar, I guess since the video ended before we could see!
weaslethorp 1 month ago
Exactly - you didn't even notice anything .... his string broke at 0:10 (that's why it says that in the video) and he managed through it by using the trem throughout his solo. Then he gave the guitar up.
bedrockhead 1 month ago
Everyone knows that when a string breaks (when the guitar is equipped with a floating tremolo), the tuning gets all out of whack. Steve made an spontaneous recovery by using the whammy bar to keep it in tune. For all those thinking that Steve's recovery was shit, try and play a 5 string guitar with the tuning all fucked up.

@BVBMilitiaLeader
i bet you can't even play like steve vai does?
Destroyerthepig 1 month ago
@BVBMilitiaLeader You're a king for saying this. No one here knows anything about that...it's way fucking difficult. I can't do it and I've had to before. I just stopped the show for a bit.
deucemcallister13 1 month ago
@deucemcallister13 Thanks man. Grown adults don't even know why the person who uploaded this video thought that this was a genius recovery. Im only 13 and I actually took the time to realize why it was such a great recovery. People need to wake up and look at the detail before they judge such an icon like Steve Vai...
BVBMilitiaLeader 1 month ago
@BVBMilitiaLeader Amen dude, that guitar practically became unplayable to most guitarists when that string broke. And I bet if the video's title was different people wouldn't have even noticed anything had gone wrong.
chaneytheshredder 1 month ago
@BVBMilitiaLeader Well fucking said. It is clear that he was constantly monitoring and adjusting the intonation (or lack of) of his notes with both the bar and with his string bending. Noobs need to respect.

@Insertreplyhere Honestly doubt it ;)
BVBMilitiaLeader 1 month ago
@BVBMilitiaLeader All steve did was whammy on one string
Insertreplyhere 1 month ago
@Insertreplyhere This is true, but he whammied it to keep it in tune for the sake of the guitar solo.
BVBMilitiaLeader 1 month ago
@Insertreplyhere you can't whammy one string, there's the door, get the fuck out
GeneralGalkovski 1 month ago 9
@GeneralGalkovski So, can you explain to me exactly HOW you can't whammy one string? If you can't provide a good explanation you will be the one walking through that door :P
Insertreplyhere 1 month ago
@Insertreplyhere you can whammy just the B or E strings if you have appropriate B or E benders.. fuck your'e still a fuckhead
