  • I remember my mon and dad slow dancin' to this in the living room.

  • me and my best vir sang this sang back in the seventies in fort chip ab

  • Should be recognized as among the truly great singers--as soulful as Aretha Franklin. What a shame that she's so little known now.

  • This is an all time classic, one of country's best 40 years later it beats anything country puts out now By as they a country mile

  • this is beatiful song and it make me come to my mind so many things of those times i had just arrived to mexico to my home land after living in DC and N York for come years i have been in Mexici ever since and i always will remember thank you for let me hear again this song

  • I love this song!! So great...

  • Awesome~!~!~!~

  • I heard this song n a bar a long time ago n I've Loved it ever since!!! Wow Ty YouTube another classic added to my favorites!!

  • Note that the original lyrics were changed from "cause tonight I need a man" to "cause tonight I need a friend". The latter was deemed too risque for country western audiences.

  • Why do they always have to put country singers sitting on bails of hay???

  • @borderlord LMAO! I always wondered that myself. Either way, this is good stuff. Kris Kristopherson is one hell of a song writer and Sammi Smith delivers. Peace. : D

  • No singer has ever gotten the message in this song across like Sammi - It is Sammi's song no matter how many others try to cash in on it - god bless her sweet soul.

  • @mothermarymary you are sooo right.... No one can touch Sammi...... Her version is the BEST version of this song.... no one comes close to her.......

  • Sammi Smith,by far, sings the best version. I used to work for an "outlaw" musician and they had a thing going for awhile.

  • This song got me through my freshman year of college with out going crazy... I still can't hear it without having flashbacks to those days. Thank you for posting this.

  • Absolutely the best recorded country music song ever! Get the album and tell me if it isn't the most haunting piece you have ever listened to. A man wrote this cherished piece and a woman nailed it!....the music created in that studio will stand the test of time.

  • l like kris and Rita singing this.....

  • LOVE YOU SAMMI

  • Well, I'm an old German and I learned to like American country music in the 70s -

ant this is one of my favorite song - thank you, Sammi !

(and to all those great American country singers - my everlasting wish - a visit to the GREAT OLD OPRY - greetings from good old Germany !

  • Great song!

  • Conway Twitty's version is my favorite, but this one is good...

  • I wore out a half dozen copies of this record my freshman year in college... damn, what a great song.

  • Grown men would miss their exists on the freeway if Sammi was singing this on their car radio......

  • I am sure that Sammi Smith did a version of TELL ME A LIE way back when I was a child; however; I have searched everywhere for this song and can't find it. Can anyone give me some direction?

  • This song make me have goosebumps to. I wish my friend was here!

  • This is one of those incredibly beautiful songs and the way she sings it just gives me goosebumps.......amazing voice Sammi had...

  • is that a phil specter song?

  • "Help Me Make It Through the Night" is a country music ballad composed by Kris Kristofferson and released on his 1970 album Kristofferson.

Also recorded in 1971 by Elvis Presley, Sammi Smith's 1971 recording of the song is the most commercially successful version; among the most successful country singles of all time in terms of sales, popularity and radio airplay, also a crossover hit on the pop chart. The most successful version after Smith's was recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1972.

  • Ray Stevens did it, as well. Although, his version was more to make fun of it than to really sing the song the way it was intended.

  • i bet noone will beleave me but thats my biological grandmother i was adopted when i was a baby so i never met her but my adoptive dad told me she was beatiful o and if u ever read any thing about her sons there was one who ether wasnt mentioned or he changed his name but zenith star was my biological father o and by the way sammi smith is only her stage name

  • My father was the drummer on the album "help me make it through the night" they played the song and there were albums all over my house. Sammi smith watched over me and my brother and sister as children and she was a very kind and loving person. My father played with her and toured with willie nelson. for a while when we were living in Dallas/Ft.worth. I believe he was working at a club called the stagecoach at that time.

  • @sacredbeandip you are so lucky to have a father that is part of this legendary #1 hit! I bet he could tell you some stories from that time! I really love Sammi Smith's version of this song! I also thank your dad for playing on this song!

  • I guess when we get older, our music interests expand. I love this song. Everythings got me crying tonight. Ive got a broken heart for sure.

  • This was my late mother's all time favorite song.

  • My mother's best friend turned me on to country music, (Wilda Potter from a town outside of Fresno, CA) in the early '60s (she watched Grand Ol' Opry at our place).

Of course in those days, country & western hits crossed over on the pop charts, so we heard "End Of The World" (Skeeter Davis), "From A Jack To A King", "Late Date:, "Devil Woman", great stuff like that...

  • @usedMTVpromos Merle Haggard lived in Tulare! Buck Owens is from Bakersfield. Alot of talent there.

  • Can anyone hear this song and not have a tear in there eyes?

    (best version by FAR!)

  • Sorry your parents passed away. I know you miss them. I miss my dad who passed away six years ago. God bless.

  • This has got to be one of the Best versions of this classic song I have heard over the last 40 years....Sammi rocks!!!

  • I help...!!!

  • As soon as I heard this song way back when, I knew every artist and their mother would cover the tune. And they're still doing it today. A real lounge lizard classic! But, the song and the moment belonged to Sammi and she is missed! RIP.

  • We need more Sammi Smith please. If any of you fellow YouTubers can help us get more Sammi. She is a class act performer and singer. Her voice just rocked the house of blues, and soul. No other beats Sammi. Sammi's a class act.

  • Damn Sammi - you just ripped my heart out.

  • Superb rendition of Help Me

Make It Through The Night by

    Sammy Smith.

  • Thanks for posting this song and recording artist of the Country and Western music genre . Luv it !

  • if u need something fuuny, look up ray stevens version of this :p

  • Sammi Smith's version will make you weep..it is a country classic...NO ONE can compare to her..

  • Who originally sang this song?

  • afaik, it was written and sung by Kris Kristofferson first

  • Thank u

  • Actually, Kris wrote the song, but Sammi had the original hit record. Kris pitched the song to several prominent singers at the time, but they thought the song too risque. Sammi recorded it and the rest is history!

  • My math equation regardless of original:

Help me make it thru the night = Sammy Smith

Green green grass of home = Porter Wagoner

Wildwood flowers = Mother Maybelle and family

I've been everywhere = Hank Snow

Leaving on a jet plane = Peter Paul and Mary

Harper Valley PTA = Jeannie C Riley

    plus more....

Great song and great singing of Sammy Smith!

  • Sammi Smith's version of Help me make it through the night is really nice but I love Martina McBride's version she did at CMA. Both use the slow emotion ladden style.

Check out Mike Farris here on You tube for a blues/soul influenced version of Green green grass of home. Very nice and he has such a powerful voice. Older version, I liked Johnny Cash's version because I don't like the "talk" part most artists did where JC sang all the way thru the song.

  • Strongly disagree - no comparison - Martina's is one of the worst versions on youtube

  • My favorite rendition of the song. Sammi Smith is great!

  • I did this on my first video , my god I'd love to be able to sing it as good as her . What a wonderful singer she was .

  • Classic song!

  • Sad to report that Sammi died in 2005. A real talent.

  • Great singer, great song! Thanks for posting.

  • She has always been my favorite singer

  • me to,i have everything i could find that she sang. i just wonder what happened to her. she was so great. i heard that at one time she was coming back but nothing came of it. a pity. she had such a sultry voice.
