At first it was scripts, but once he begins to make associations he demonstrates understanding. Example, prompting him to say "Hi" when people enter. He used to just do it because we prompted him. Now when mom gets home he smiles and says "Hi, mommy". He uses a lot of language to request. When we taught him each thing, he was saying words because we told him to, now he is clearly using language independently because it gets him what he wants. Long winded answer! Sorry.
