My guess why America interfered in Somalia's civil war was that the ousted Somali regime signed a contract with American oil companies for exploring rights just before the country broke apart .
Leading up to that black hawk battle, multinational soldiers were dying left and right and that included Americans. That's why both the UN and the US felt Aidid had to go. The problem began when helicopters were sent in to kill Aidid who was thought to be in a building...it turned out that building was occupied by Aidid's clan elders who were trying to convince Aidid to cooperate with the foreigners. Aidid used their deaths for his own cause and made his war weary militia vengeful.
The Deltas were dropped into that kind of hostile environment where everybody wanted to take revenge for that previous assassination attempt. Oh yeah, Aidid made sure his people were distrustful of the Americans by telling them that they were there to disarm them, rape them, kill them, and force convert them. The first warning did occur when UN troops tried to disarm them. They killed 24 Pakistani UN troops who were trying to confiscate their weapons from their arms depot.

The intervention was more or less to restore order to allow food supplies to enter the country. It was definintely current with his foreign policy. Now Desert Shielf was for oil. Protecting Saudi Arabia for no other purpose but to protect the oil fields.
Chevron bought an exploration rights for oil in Somalia just before the civil war broke out. Some early findings showed Somalia did have oil but they wanted to find out just how much of oil that country had. It was suspected that Somalia shared the same underground shell with the rest of the Gulf states and probably had a substantial quantity of oil. While those studies was happening, the civil war broke. Now most people suspect that Chevron lobbied Bush senior to interfere.

18 died on that one single incident but the overall dead count from the US and other UN troops in that mission was much higher. Besides, that incident was nothing compared to the grave errors America is doing right now, especially with the Iraq war.
My guess why America interfered in Somalia's civil war was that the ousted Somali regime signed a contract with American oil companies for exploring rights just before the country broke apart .

Leading up to that black hawk battle, multinational soldiers were dying left and right and that included Americans. That's why both the UN and the US felt Aidid had to go. The problem began when helicopters were sent in to kill Aidid who was thought to be in a building...it turned out that building was occupied by Aidid's clan elders who were trying to convince Aidid to cooperate with the foreigners. Aidid used their deaths for his own cause and made his war weary militia vengeful.

The intervention was more or less to restore order to allow food supplies to enter the country. It was definintely current with his foreign policy. Now Desert Shielf was for oil. Protecting Saudi Arabia for no other purpose but to protect the oil fields.

Some early findings showed Somalia did have oil but they wanted to find out just how much of oil that country had. It was suspected that Somalia shared the same underground shell with the rest of the Gulf states and probably had a substantial quantity of oil. While those studies was happening, the civil war broke. Now most people suspect that Chevron lobbied Bush senior to interfere.
