Sorry, my reply does sound harsh rather than inquisitive.

My experience is that this question comes from citizens of the US. When I reply 'no', the question comes up about Europe and Canada, that's all.

When I have then divulged my country of birth, this has led to being blamed for every real or imagined slight upon the poor folk of the US.
