Whenever you are questioned by a citizen (potential voter), you have 3 simple choices

-tell the true

-tell nothing

-tell "whatever he/she wants to hear"

Never take option one, not even in front of the god/demon of your choice.

Second choice is the all around second best choice. Example:

-voter: when the war is gonna end?

-candidate: if there is a god in heaven and a president in the white house and a pope in rome, my answer would be, let us pray
