@1ALJAY This is true. He died withing 3 hours of his wife (Sara) being buried. He wasn't at the wake due to his illness, but Dec (Elvis) was with him when he died. He said that, right before he died, Ross reached out and said Sa Sa, as if Sara was calling out to him.
Exactly 50 years ago, I visited the Hammersmith Palais for the first time and got to love the singing of Ross with the Joe Loss Orchestra. It became my" home" for 4 years, until marriage ended my search of the "local talent"!. I remember this little man with the deap brown voice, singing all types of pop songs in many languages.
I remember Ross touring the Clubs all over England...I met him and got to know him very well, when I was touring with Professional Recording Artists myself in Blackpool....I was only 15 at the time!!
Happy Birthday Ross....from Doreen..(My Mum)....Sharon...( Me )...and the "Gemini Twins "xoxo
There's a lot of odd/interesting/unexpected stuff happening here. For the lead singer to be Elvis Costello's father is unexpected, but yeah, he sure does resemble his son - plus he's a musician and singer to boot.
I would not ordinarily think of an orchestra like this as being a part of a show called "Big Beat '64" 'cause they ain't rock & roll, and that's odd.
Plus, they're performing a calypso-inspired song, and they certainly are anything BUT Jamaican or black themselves.
Ross MacManus (born Ronald Patrick Ross McManus,[1] 20 October 1927, Birkenhead[2]) is an English musician and trumpet player, who performed with Joe Loss and his orchestra. He joined Loss in March 1955.[3]
He is also the father of the singer, Elvis Costello, and father-in-law of Diana Krall.
I was there at that concert and also frequented the Hammersmith Palais in the 60's,when Joe Loss was in residence. This video shows 2 of his singers, Ross McManus (singing) and Larry Gretton. Rose Brennan made up the singers.
@1ALJAY Me too! I remember the three (excellent) singers had to sound like everybody around at the time so that they could do all the hit songs.. Ross did a passable Jim Reeeves. Rose did all the Kathy Kirby stuff and had a minor hit with "Tall Dark Stranger." Joe of course had two "Madison" hits in the early sixties plus "Wheels Cha Cha" and "Steptoe Twist." The Palais was the place to be back then.
The song is called "Patsy Girl" if anyone is wondering. The recording of it is by Ross McManus and the Joe Loss Blue Beats. Someone else posted a YouTube video of the audio only, from the record. It's under "Ross McManus - Patsy Girl."
This is one of my fave videos!!! I have the NME Pollwinners Concert for the Rolling Stones but found a surprise in this one. I had never heard it before seeing that DVD. I love the way they all crouch at the end then yell "yeah" and laugh. They were having so much fun. Ross McManus (Elvis Costello's father) is the lead singer. Brilliant song... excellent performance! Thank you for posting it!

I am more than a little sad to learn of the passing of Ross. I bought this record when it was first released and about three months ago
included it on one of my home made C-Ds of all time favourites. Little did I know that this was soon to become a tribute.
