You have to know what kind of strategy you're going to use, and your strategy depends on what Pokemon you choose to put on a team and EV train them up in one/two stats so your strategy can work. Furthermore, you need to know what strategy your opponent is using so you can see if you can counter it. Your team might easily beat one team, but quail against another. And there's much more to explain, but I can't fit it into a 500-letter comment.

@Butler93pokemad I have no problem with you guys hacking to get your max EV teams with shiny and everything, but it makes me feel like I wasted my time spending hours trying to crack 400 attack on my tyranitar and 742 HP on blissey. I spent 100 hours and 41 minutes completing the game and setting up my team.

Just to let most of you know, this is what we call a 'Whoreish' Pokemon match, its a serious tournament so we used serious teams and played conservatively, high stakes requires high levels of play. Most of the time battles are a lot more fun, both to watch and play. If you've never tried it, I suggest attempt to win in a tournament. I have both Pokemon and CoD and Pokemon is more difficult and takes more skill online.
