Dear Barry, i have watched your vid over and over again, and it gives me the shivers. I think its the best vidido at the market to day concenrning flyfishing for northern pike. What a monsters. I have to stay here in Holland and catch my pike here becouse i do not fly in a airplaine. I keep track on the things you do on video.. hopefuly you make a new film soon and make a lot of pike-angelers happy. Best regards,
Pim Busker from the Netherlands.( have a look at my channel if you like)
Barry you are to modest in your answer for favorite flies. The Reynold's Pike Fly I have said for years is the best Pike fly ever invented. It works so well I don't think color even matters. The motion is one no self respecting Pike can pass up.
I understand completely why you fish for them - I get the came crazy comments about both pike and barracuda. Love them both dearly! Great video - Fish on
hy BARRY imfrom ROMANIA im a beginer in flyfishing and i wana ask you something,i have a 5wt shimano nexave fly rod and what i wana ask you is that does exist pike flies for it?and what kind of line do i need thanks aticipated. bytheway i whatched all your videos iv found whit you and i like them very very much .
@MsCormanios you really need a bigger rod......... most of the flies we fish for pike are large and as such require a rod in the 8wt to 10wt size! We do most of our fishing wih floating lines but I also carry a sink tip line with me at all times as well!
@barryreynoldsflyfish i realy have to say that it s a honor for me to get an answer from Barry Reynolds, i have in plan to buy a 8 or 9 wt and see the sensation to catch a pike with a fly. i can t belive that you answered me.
great vid., great fishing manners" too, by which i mean the way these great sporting fish are treated
-30-40 years ago Pike were almost regarded as vermin by coarse fishermen, and were gaffed ,butchered wholesale -now i think fishermen have wised up a bit
as they have realised that in many fisheries without Pike, you end up with a lake
full of tiddlers-yes Pike are ruthless predators, but they eat the sick or diseased
fish-also the big hen Pike are more seasonal in their feeding.
@XooBONES I am not Barry but I could recommend you " Climax'-Toothy Creature " its a really nice wire tippet and I am using it for Pike Fly Fishing with 0.50 mono as leader !
awsome video have you ever tried fly fishing for muskies? this also makes me want to fly fish for pike, little lake butte des mortes has some monsters that may fall for a fly- cheers
@citalopram40mg I have fished muskies on the fly as well and find them terrific sport on the fly! Although harder to catch than pike well worth the effort! Thanks for the comments!
That's some quality fly-fishing right there, Barry. Great footage! I see you're fishing barbless hooks at 4:05, have you noticed any increased number of lost pikes or is the barbless hook only to release it safer?
@lolrobin The area I am fishing is barbless but to answer your question, no I dont think we lose any more fish using barbless and it certainly makes it easier and safer to release them for the angler and the fish. Most of these types of areas went barbless years ago and recent studies have shown the hook mortality rate has dropped! When a pike eats a fly it is reluctant to give it back :~) LOL! Glad you enjoyed.
@Rathlenaboys really depends on your season there! The top water action was filmed post spawn about the third week of June while the pike were still piled up in shallow water. I know that many waters are closed during and right after the spawn so the timing would be the only question on whether or not you could hit the top water action and when your open season is...
@lstrumbell I prefer usig a 9' 9wt rod for my pike fishing but i do know a lot of anglers are starting to use the longer spey and switch rods for this type of fishing particularly where there is limited room for backcast...
@barryreynoldsflyfish im 14 i forgot my pole when i went to a lake but had my fly rod (9 foot 5 weight) and a few bass flies, i used 30 pound test as leeder and caught a 29 inch norther the lake reccord was 30 inch norther so i dident do bad right? im doing again in a few weeks with my friend on a camping fishing trip there :P
Now I have caught some pike. Not big (they were small), the biggest was 62 cm. But it it so much fun how strange the people are looking to you her in holland, and the takes are amazing, especially with the foam popper i used, that fish totally came out of the water! I love fly fishing for pike, and, as you said, I can't stop!
@Mck236 I like to tie and setup my own leaders. I make them using 6 foot of 22lb hard mono and then connect it to 20lb nylon coated steel leader using an Albright knot. This knot grabs the wire with wraps around the leader as opposed to other knots the basically create a loop to loop connection in which the wire eventually will wear through the mono section and break. The Albright knot will not do this. I use a perfection loop in the mono end that is attached to the fly line and a arbor knot
Very nice video! I never caught a pike on the fly, but this period i'm trying it. I only have had one pike who followed my fly. What am I supposed to do then?
@Flytyinkid I like to use either a 9wt or 10 wt rod! I use the 9wt for throwing clipped deer hair poppers and divers while using the 10wt to throw larger streamers and baitfish patterns! Thanks for watching..
@barryreynoldsflyfish thx for the response and a 9 wt is what i use too. do you have a website that i could buy those topwaters on? i like to tie my own too but just to get some ideas. i subscribed pls post mor vids too love em!!

@fishinfobass88 I prefer a 9wt weight rod although an 8wt would work! Most people are fishing 8wt-10wt but for me personally I prefer the 9wt!
