I can see how MAriah really influenced people in singing, especially in Asia.
The hard part is, when people compare a new star from an existing star and still shining, it's a difficult thing, especially that Mariah is still out there and racking up hits...

Jane Zhang does not sing well. Her voice is like shit. Compared to Mariah Carey she is nothing. This is absolute piffle. Her singing makes people clamp their ears shut in disgust and revulsion. She's not going to make it. The melisma effects, vocal spanning - every note sung in this song is an exact duplicate of Mariah Carey's rendition of 'Without You' 17 years ago in Madison Square Garden. The image projected is built predicated on MC's fame and talent, both of which far greater than this dismal singer. I have seen the touting of her new album - dubbed as 'Chinese Mariah Carey' for greater publicity and sales. How very original.

They didn't have to sing in 7 octaves - so number of octaves does not determine power. Moreover, two people can sing in different octaves and still be in harmony. That's why men and women can sing duo's together so well.

Jane Zhang does not sing well. Her voice is like shit. Compared to Mariah Carey she is nothing. This is absolute piffle. Her singing makes people clamp their ears shut in disgust and revulsion. She's not going to make it. She hasn't even got any sort of vocal prowess comparable to standing singers like Mariah and Leona Lewis and she pales terribly in comparison to English artistes who can actually sing, unlike her. And she's selling her album by being dubbed as 'Chinese Mariah'. Freeloader shit.

If you thought her vocal power is formidable, then I suppose you haven't seen Whitney Houston or Aretha Franklin or Mariah Carey in action, because clearly, she does not fit your proverbial description of being vocally 'powerful'. And operatic is defined by vocal range. MC has seven octaves, Jane Zhang spans less than 4 - a stark disparity, if you ask me.

MC is American and speaks in English; naturally, the linguistics of her works would be delineated by this fact. To work in your path of logic, I believe Mariah can sing - I wouldn't say 'traditional', it's too oriental - English classics; she is multi-talented: being able to act, produce and sing.

If opera singer Placido Domingo can't sing any language but Mexican, he is limited to songs by Mexican composers. Same with Chinese, US, or any other singer. As you just pointed out, Zhang can imitate Maria Carey perfectly; but because Zhang can also sing Spanish, Latino, and Chinese songs just as well, she's more versatile.

In this prospect, MC is, indubitably, an extraordinary singer. Moreover, regarding your point on harmonisation (which I've never contended), if you have heard 'One Sweet Day' (record-holder of most number of weeks atop Billboard) for instance, the harmonisation was done impeccably. Clearly, the capacity of talent in MC extends vastly.

As you've pointed out, those singers have attained the pinnacles of their careers without encountering constraint in their 'versatility', or lack thereof (which inherently does not matter). You've missed my point too: Zhang does a dismal duplicating of Mariah (whistle register or not), which is incessantly revolting. The image projected, like a parasite, is fed from someone else's gifts and fame, and Zhang's tendency to copy.

The only thing she has to do is to hire a pronunciation mentor to impart her the mechanics of how to enunciate the lyrics; lo and behold, she can sing in a variety of languages. It works the same way with Korean band Tohoshinki: they're Koreans, yet they sing in Japanese not because they are versatile, but because they were taught to imitate pronunciation as Zhang was.

I do not mind her pronounication because English is NOT her main langugage. But for God's sake, why must she give herself an English name??? We are in the 21st century and not colonial days! Do you know that some Euroupean countries do not allow English or American or any other races names for their citizens? It is their laws eg in Germany, you cannot spell some names in English spelling but must still to German spelling. Also, another Scan country allows only their Scan names.
