the ATC's comment was neither rude nor reckless. Given that many people almost died, the ATC could probably be excused for a minor "venting" moment. Knowhatimean?
As a pilot, and travelling through many taxiways, it isnt as easy as everyone makes out. During taxi you are doing the check lists, you are looking out of your windows and you are preparing for your take off. On top of that you are in a long line of other aircraft and comms. Yes they didnt hold in Egypy Air which is bad. But you dont realise how easy it is to miss read the taxiway signs. Was there any sun glare? was there any rain? was there anything to hinder? i am not saying they aren't wrong.
@Haagendal15 so you have seen the process but you don't hold a CTO? i hold 2 CTOs and i can tell you that before you condemn the controller listen to the tapes in the cab. see if GC noticed and told LC or if it was FD or maybe WS. see what really happened in the cab. see you have never worked in a tower so how can you speak towards knowing they where the ones who did something wrong?
@Haagendal15 Excuse me? Did you not hear her give the directions and Egypt Air repeated them back; but then missed the turnoff? It's because of the visual ATC (looking out the window) that another Teneriffe didn't happen!
I don't get the whole "no need to speak about it on frequency". He was trying to make sure he wasn't gonna have another Egypt Air joker pull out in front of him. He was the plane that saved the day and in return he gets treated like a dick. No need to speak about it on frequency? Suppose he should call the tower? Of course, "no need to speak about it dude" probably came after another aircraft's comment. Awesome* media probably messed with the audio on purpose.
Lol, "wind spam". We know what you mean.... Good job by Mr. Big Cojones ATC. Don't worry about saying the ident, just blurt out "Cancel takeoff!!!". The fewer syllables, the better. Same thing as what happened in Toronto not so long ago. There, the ground guy just said "(Company name) Stop, stop, stop!"
@fube432 then, from what the picture shows in the video.. specially a runway in JFK should cover an a340 wind spam and there shouldn't have been any problems for it to take off.. but for a precaution it's good.. or the pilot could give left rudder untile the main gear was at the edge of the tarmac and could the stopp... wouldn't be in need to make the brakes useless.
If you listen to the full recording, it appears that the tower controller on duty during the incident was relieved right after. Sounds like it's another voice making the comments you refer to.
um... if you would have listened.... the EgyptAir Pilot MISSED the taxiway turn, thereby heading into the active runway. How would you have reacted seeing 350 souls almost perish in front of your eyes? I'm sure not as quick as he did to have LH reject that takeoff. That JFK controller is one of the most level-headed and professional controllers at that airport.
Sounds like maybe there needs to be more people in the tower so that there are just as many eyes on the planes taxiing TO the runway as there are on the planes taking off. ATC guy was so flustered. It almost comes off as if his head had been in the clouds instead of in his work. Everyone got lucky. Not everyone would've reacted as clearly.
@Redden08 Right, because ATC gave the EgyptAir pilot clear directions to go left, taxi down the runway, and hold for takeoff, and instead he continues straight and onto the active runway. I guess in your mind when someone else screws their job up it's the fault of the person who told you how to do it correctly. That makes sense though, because only an idiot would think that.
@9878rogersj actually no - in aviation incidents people don't only want to understand HOW something happened but also WHY it could happen.
It seems pretty clear that the EgyptAir Crew is responsible by not turning on the taxiway as instructed by ATC. However, investigators now want to find out why they didn't, almost nobody would be satisfied by: "they simply overlooked/missed the turn"
Contributing factors could be the complex taxiway system, poor markings, cockpit procedures etc.
I wasn't trying to suggest that it was ATC's fault. I was simply saying that 4 or 6 eyes, if not more, on a runway at a busy airport is better than just 2. Maybe having more people on hand to keep an eye on a situation may better prevent these things from happening. No need to name call. Comments are for discussion, not to recreate a third grade classroom.
@Redden08 OK, fine, I apologize for the rude remark, but your initial response was criticism of the ATC. That would be all good and well, except we could clearly hear a female ATC give specific directions to the EgyptAir pilot, which he disregarded, likely not intentionally, but still disregarded. My point is it's clearly not ATC error. I'd hate to be the one to come under fire for something that was certainly not my fault, and I'd think you would agree.
I do agree. We've all had the finger pointed at us needlessly a time or two and it sucks, so I apologize as well for being harsh toward the ATC. They have a difficult job, and working long and shitty hours exacerbates issues that already come with the territory. I realize this and I'm thankful that everyone was able to walk away.
1:24 atc is a homo dumbass. dont be mad cause you or someone on your crew weren't watching and someone else had to keep your mistake from killing people. now i'm wondering what a 777 looks like getting run through by another plane at full throttle.
@cyanideisabitterpill I don't get it. What would have been the worst aviation disaster in U.S. history almost occurred, and you're complaining that an ATC guy used the word "dude," after almost witnessing that disaster? Good God, his heart must have been racing 100 mph. Surely you could've found something more substantial to say.
@mkraeftig7 what really made the ATC sound really rude was when he said "no need to speak about it on our frequency", the pilot was merely confirming what he should be doing
As a matter of fact the B777-300. i's big, I can tell It's challenging to get the aircraft straight onto a taxiway after a turn no matter what your experience. From tower it very possibly might have looked Egyptair was taxiing too far towards 22R at J when crew was actually doing a good job of turning into B without hitting anything with the main gear.Explains ground communication with Egyptair. From it never appeared Egyptair entered 22R at J in the first place
