Notice how Elijah is supposed to be recounting his recent adventure, but - because he isn't an actor - he's concentrating too hard on hitting his 'cue' to freak out and what he's saying leading up to it doesn't make any sense. He's just babbling until he gets the cue to freak out and start running.
