They don't consider themselves rhythm or lead. When it comes to solos, they trade off. Jim will go first then Mick, or the other way around. They do a lot more solos in the new album "All Hope Is Gone."

mick does most of solos, but live, slipknot play more song with james solos... i think mick is faster and accurate, but jim has this melodic feeling... mick is like a technical death guitar, james is kinda hard rock guitar... and both in harmony are awesome together...

=S for what i knew... jim doen't write the solos... he confest that he plays solos using shapes and practily improvisating all in studio... and then for live shows he reviews his solos and play it not the same but something very close... all the ways, most guitars in slipknot are writed by joey, mick and craig...

They may keep it simple, but they are NOT mainstream by any means. Slipknot is still an awesome band, so don't rule them out just because they don't have 5 minute guitar solos. Each member is skilled, as shown in this video. It's just a shame they don't have as much time to show their skill on their albums! But the new album has quite a lot more guitar solos and crazy riffs so that makes me a lot happier. =D
