I'm from Belgium and I love those roadtrains,my dad drives a volvo FH12 420 but it's chipped to almost 600 horses.but I can't believe that you Americans,Australians,... didn't make an open exhaust on your trucks, this makes a nicer sound.just go to YOUTUBE and search for volvo FH16 520 with straith exhaust, scania v8 580 164 (3).Thats the European style.
mstruckerboy you are the stupid one. this aint an interstate hwy. this is how its done in heavy haul off road conditions. Here in canada, its normal to have a d8 cat or grader help you up a hill, with chains on, in the summer! the road is what it is, the load is what it is. you cant change either one, you just do what you gotta do.
That shows how stupid it's possible to be! They should not overload the truck like that. The tires are to slippy to drive with in those condisions. But a great video :D 5 stars!
To be honest with you, i have my doubts about those drivers... they were probably pulled of a mule and put in that truck cab without proper driving education....
Now i know why Volvo was bidding for Tatra offroad truck factory a few years back, when it was for sale...
They could probably use a Tatra T-817 8x8 army transporter, with large Michelin industrial tires, Twin-disk 10 speed automatic and 840 hp V12...
MAN makes good construction trucks, but Mercedes truck engines arent made to last.. they would last on a European 40 ton GCW, but if you put them on a cold asphalt mill or a forage harvester, they blow up quickly. Let alone when used in these conditions with 200 ton GCW...
The Volvo's used all the brakes; hydraulic retarder, exhaust brake, service brakes and trailer brakes.
The local company using Kenworths didnt have brakes on most wheels, not at all enough on the downhills, to prevent from overrevving they had to put the gears in neutral.....!!!= total out of control for about two kilometres....:)
good volvo

Does anyone know what tyre size in the tractor?.
Is the same size in the trailer?
Maybe 12R24?
chiquitojo 4 years ago
Hi chiquitojo.
you are right 12R24, the Kenworth however had the advantage of 13R25!!!

i love your videos i watch them very often and i am very impressed with those trucks.thanks for sharing
do you know does they use now 325/95r24 instead of 12r24
and is i-shift available in indonesia, it have very small overall ratio
do you know does volvo ever offered overdrive gearboxes with crawler gear from direct gearbox like they used to have in australia with 16.41-0.8:1

Maybe too long to downshift from 6ªHigh to 4ªLow
chiquitojo 4 years ago
With 180 ton and 10% climb its the only option, and from 4 low direct into 1 low, and thats pretty difficult to do...

Drivers here is actually one of the best in the world, not many other places they do heavy climbs with 200 tons.
Previously onj this site they have had special built 8x8 Daf's, they didnt last long...
peterrombergse 4 years ago
They use the same Sisu drive axles...

no its not its just to change the range and split switch

Buy a 6x6 or 8x8 Mercedes or MAN.
They are really trucks.

Those are some grown up trailers too, extra wide and all.
I'm happy I wasn't reborn as a truck tire there :-)
Wonder how many days a year that grader is at the hill pushing one truck up after another...?
How is it downhill when they have unloaded? is there a braking problem there?

The asphalt is funny enough only slippery when its a just a little wet. When its raining a lot the grip is better and they didnt need the graders.
Now they have built a 5 km long bypass, the two heavy 10-12% climbs is one 4%.
peterrombergse 4 years ago
They have had some big ones pulling 250 tons+ on hilly terrain 24/7.
They had better grip than the Volvo's due to 13x25! tires!
peterrombergse 4 years ago
i never knew they used Kenworths in Indonesia.
