Bicycles transportation is great, much better than cars. However, what's even better than bicycles would be light train transport. Like above ground rails or perhaps subways. LA has a subway, but it goes to like 3 places once every hour or some stupid shit, that's why nobody takes it.
Get some trains going and you'll instantly have way less traffic, cleaner air, and more money to spend on things other than gas.
You see that little white sign at 0:17 ? Know what it says? It says "Pedestrians, Bicycles, Motor Driven Cycles Prohibited" (I double checked on google maps street view), so while yes, biking is legal on some stretches of freeway, what you did was illegal.
It's nice to know that this fight it's going on a huge global scale. I'm from Mexico city, another car friendly city, where bike commuting it's not seem as a role to pursuit, however we have also a lot of probicycle actions here. It really gives me faith that all mayor cities where the "modernity" of car mobility it's going old. KEEP ON GUYS, ¡SALUDOS DESDE MÉXICO, VIVA LA BICI!
I love my car, but I love bicycling too. I think bicycles alleviate car congestion. A bike is small and easy to pass (If traffic is MOVING). Yes this is a stunt video, but I thought it was awesome, because WHY ARE THE CARS NOT MOVING? Oh that's right, bc. California is too FULL . hahahaha
@richtotheie Which is MOST places. The ONLY place in San Diego you can ride on the freeway is the strech between Oceanside and the Orange County line. This video even shows the sign PROHIBITING these idiots.
This is great! Cars are the worst invention EVER! I rarely exceed 10mph during my commute (and it’s probably the most stressful part of my day). Kudos to you for your sarcastic-stunt-creating awareness-thing!
I'm a cyclist and a commuter but I feel like most of these "protests" especially critical mass, create greater polarity between cyclist and driver. In other words, it doesn't really help your cause just makes you and your friends feel better about yourselves and it makes drivers upset about cyclists. There has to be a more reasonable approach. Also, opinions of protests aside, wtf isn't dude wearing a helmet? A fixie rider isn't so hip when their brains are scattered all over the freeway..
Thanks for your comment! I completely agree with you about Critical Mass. All it does is stop car drivers from getting to where they need to go and is often hostile and rude. In this case, everyone is still going where they need to go, except bikes are getting there faster. That is the only stated point of this demonstration. Bikes can get places faster than cars. (especially at rush hour, duh haha)
There is a bridge that goes across the Colorado River on the I-8 from Yuma, AZ into California. One evening for laughs and giggles I rode my mountain bike down an on ramp leading up to it, and keeping as far to the right as I could I crossed over the Colorado River, and exited at the next off ramp. It was exciting, and stupid, and I wouldn't do it again, but what you guys did was INSANE!! Drivers reactions must have been funny to see.
lol it's always funny to see guys on cheap, non-polluting bicycles moving twice as fast as all the yahoos in their expensives cars pumping out smog. I understand it's a traffic jam but still, it's just so funny looking.

I hope that (besides the reality checks, cognitive dissonances, and just plain freak outs the drivers had) you also managed to plant a kernel of doubt in the supremacy of the automobile in minds of the Entitled American Motorists of L.A. that day.
My problem with your protest is that you neglect to mention that a lot of these people live FAR AWAY from the job centers due to the lack of affordable housing.
I'd could see people biking to work if they lived relatively close (5-10 mi). However that's not the case for a lot of people. Why don't you try work to tackle issues such as shortage, or lack of, of affordable housing in these job centers in the greater LA Area and/or the lack of job centers in areas of affordable housing.

It is illegal to do that. You could be ticketed for bicycling on a freeway. Why not use a private road or a bike path that will take you wherever you need to go? And have you not seen a video of this guy being chased by the police while on the freeway? This could be a wake up call that may help save your life.
As much as I love bicycles, you bitches should realize a car can fucken kill you. You guys would sue whoever hit you very quick. Besides, you guys seem like a bunch of outsider/yuppies trying to be cool.
Just moved to Amsterdam and you should see it here - cyclists outnumber motorists in many parts of the city. They've got dedicated bike lanes everywhere - even intercity ones! Laws here even favor cyclists in a number of ways. I want to bring the culture with me when I leave. Ride on!
thats not really true amsterdam cyclists are just pricks that stop for no one had one biker the other day near the CS that almost hit me but i pushed him resulting him riding in a fence.
HA, HA, HA, HA! That's great! I commute too and wonder why cyclists can't use the freeway when it's in park mode. Haven't got the balls to lane split though.
Yes! I've been commuting on bike for the last 7 years in Santa Monica and I've always wanted to run the freeway at rush hour since it's just a big parking lot! I used to ride from S.M. to Beverly Hills to work and I could only imagine how much faster if I was biking on the freeway with no stop signs or stoplights. A straight 10 freeway bike run from 4th st. to Overland would be an awesome ride!
seriously, they should be doing that instead of parading around the freeway among people who couldn't give two shits about these kids "making a statement."
Good for you guys...this town should be ashamed, that with 300 plus days of sunshine, it has no resources for bicyclists. It's an embarassment for the city. Right on!
The sad part is if you get hurt, you get to sue the car driver. You people suck. It's like if you tell someone to walk 3 blocks on the sidewalk, and if you step on an ant you go to jail
Doubtful... The cyclist would be riding illegally through a posted prohibited cycling zone. I rode in this ride fully aware that I could get hurt... albeit the danger of getting hurt is MUCH LESS than riding via a busy BLVD.
It might be funny if some of the Freeway riders in the next video did a kind of serial of t-shirts with messages that played of the "American Express" ad that would say, "Gas over $4 per gallon", "Zero MPH on the freeway", "riding a bicycle on the freeway during rush hour, PRICELESS" ... or some variation of that. search youtube for "Ralph Nader priceless" for mock ads.
FYI, became aware of Apple contiplating, ALSO doing a youtube video and/or photo ad campaign with the Freeway bicycle riding theme. And for their's the end of the video would merely show the Apple logo(in silence), with the words "Think Different".
became aware of a report that Nike contemplating producing youtube video with some people riding their bicycles on the Freeway during rush hour.. and at the end of the video, the Nike logo, with the words "JUST DO IT!"
you've prob. heard about CRITICAL MASS in sfo? it's quite a sight... very powerful. hundreds and hundreds of people at once rolling by in downtown sf.
Awesome video, great song. It almost makes me wish I lived in L.A. Almost. I've ridden the highway from Petaluma to Novato on Hwy 101.. but it's actually legal. I averaged 26mph but there was low traffic density so the cars were flying past me. Too bad the videographer didn't capture some of the expressions on the cagers faces... that could have been priceless. Were there a lot of honks at the riders?
The fact is..heavy, slow traffic makes riding safer! I used to haul so much ass around Chicago. More spread out, less dense cities always felt quite dangerous by comparison. Once I took a trip down Damen Ave. from Foster-> 20th, counting +1 for every car I passed and -1 for every car that passed me. The final count was in the 60s...
I used to commute to work on a skateboard, and used a short section of freeway for part of the trip home every day. Fun, fun :)
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!! i miss LA - lots of crazy shit going on down there. used to be the same in SF until the dotcoms drove out all the artists and radicals. keep it going!
I wish they would create a bike\skate lane o the freeways! I'd be all over it. All the dumb asses out there with there stupid comments are the reason why gas is so expensive.
Is would be fun to see a velomobile on the 10 and 405 freeway. Those suckers can go over 80 miles per hour by human power(pedaling) alone. And they can cruise at over 50 miles per hour for over an hour by human power(pedaling) alone.
biking in this traffic for 5 minutes is like smoking 5 packs of cigarettes, but hey, whatever makes you sleep at night

This is not about rules. It's a demonstration. The only aspect illegal was riding our bikes on the freeway.
1. Helmets are not a requirement in CA.
2. Unsafe is relative. Spliiting lanes is LEGAL in CA.
3. We completely respect the cause - why else would we do it without endangering others? Why else is the bike scene growing exponentially in LA?
It's working.

Just moved to Amsterdam and you should see it here - cyclists outnumber motorists in many parts of the city. They've got dedicated bike lanes everywhere - even intercity ones! Laws here even favor cyclists in a number of ways. I want to bring the culture with me when I leave. Ride on!
ohwhye 3 years ago
thats not really true amsterdam cyclists are just pricks that stop for no one had one biker the other day near the CS that almost hit me but i pushed him resulting him riding in a fence.
GoodFellah69 3 years ago
HA, HA, HA, HA! That's great! I commute too and wonder why cyclists can't use the freeway when it's in park mode. Haven't got the balls to lane split though.
try2gofast 3 years ago
The only thing I've done remotely close to this is lanesplitting through rush hour traffic on Wilshire from about Centinela to Sepulveda.
Looks like a blast!
euskadi71 3 years ago
A straight 10 freeway bike run from 4th st. to Overland would be an awesome ride!

and wow, this music is like, such true hardcore punk.

No way dude, it's that shitty garage indie that all of the kool hipsters listen to. They don't know what the fuck punk is.

That's great.
Don't stop the rock, stick it to the man.
Get some friends in other states to start doing those all over the country.
Maybe organize some skate[board]ers to do that, except skitch off the bikers... that'd be sick.
wolfmanjeb 3 years ago
Good for you guys...this town should be ashamed, that with 300 plus days of sunshine, it has no resources for bicyclists. It's an embarassment for the city. Right on!

What band and song is this? I always think about riding a bike when I'm stuck in traffic.

Hey there! The song info and band link are at the bottom of the video information :)
See you on the freeway!

oops. thanks.

The sad part is if you get hurt, you get to sue the car driver. You people suck. It's like if you tell someone to walk 3 blocks on the sidewalk, and if you step on an ant you go to jail
eddiesocket 3 years ago

Were there a lot of honks at the riders?
zythepsary 3 years ago
this is very cool to see.

Fun, fun :)
I wish they had gone further!

This is going to be a lot of fun, UNTIL someone gets killed by a car or truck.

Is would be fun to see a velomobile on the 10 and 405 freeway. Those suckers can go over 80 miles per hour by human power(pedaling) alone. And they can cruise at over 50 miles per hour for over an hour by human power(pedaling) alone.
