@6:49 you leave the variation saying white is in a better position, but the knf4 creates a nice fork and continuation for black... Do black's chances sputter out after that?
@MrsPoker you cannot castle through check, into check or out of check. However if you block check, you can castle as long as you obey the rules i just mentioned
i hardly play 1.e4, but when i do and the opponent tradionally moves 1.e5, 2.Nc6, i ALWAYS play the Ruy Lopez. The reason it is the most studied and played opening is that there is no real way to defend it, i cant stress that enough. Personally, i wouldnt use this defense, (blocking opening for Q and B), but i do enjoy watching your videos. I do seem to look at the game in similar ways as yourself
Hey Jrobi, enjoying the videos - starting to learn a bit of opening theory for the first time, and must say I tend to learn more variant openings so this is a nice addition. Been playing with Grob's attack (1.g4) on the basis that I've always been a defensive player and need to learn some attacking strategies - you had a look into anything like that?
I've played this opening for awhile, and I've got a question about whites 7th move, 7. exe5. No one i've played against does this...99% of the time, the move is 7. e6. After that, white maintains the initiative and advantage in the center. HELP!!!!
(this should be the beginning) I ran into an interesting line in a game on chessworld. After my opponent played the Cozio, the game continued as follows: d3, a6, bc4, h6, O-O, b5, Bb3, d5, exd5, Nxd5.
Now I played a temporary sacrifice with Nxe5. He recaptured with his knight and then I played Qh4, pinning down his f pawn and pinning his e knight to his d knight, and guaranteeing that I will regain the knight and be a pawn up. He played Qd6 and I played Re1. This is where my game is right now. I don't know if this counts as a trapping line but it put my opponent in a terrible position.
forgive me if I am not making any sence but when you go through the moves after white plays N C3 and the resulting line looked a bit like a combination between the sicilian dragon and tne roy lopez with out the black pawn on C5 good video though
Fried, knight d4 is a good move then - White has to move like pc3 or bishop a4. Black can play ng6 and be7 then, and has a fine position since the knight on g5 has to retreat.
Thaks for the vid! I'm starting to use the Cozio and have had a rough time of it. In my current game, white played 4) Ng5 and I had NO IDEA what to do. Anyobdy got suggestions???!!!
As white I would play 4. d4, because if black exchanges on d4 that gives white a nicely centralized queen that can't be easily driven off, and if black tries to defend with 4. d4, f6 I would simply exchange pawns on e5, giving my queen the half open d file and moving part of the black king's pawn cover toward the center, discouraging a short castle.
hi can any one tell me what is going to happen if in the C3 variation on his 8th move white capture the bishop with the knight instead of B pawn i mean he would have good pawn structure an isolated pawn at d4
I don't mean to rush you; or sound rude, but could I ask you to hurry with the a6 variation? When I play Ruy Lopez, that's the most common response that I get so I really hope you can put out a video soon. Thanks in advance!
Absolutely - it's a different variation of the Ruy Lopez which I plan on covering in another vid - but it's defnitely an option. Thanks for checking out this one!
as referring to your comment , i should say that i had learned chess from my father and one of his old book about chess:)
jrobi , thanks for videos anyway they are informative...i'm absolutely fan of sicilian defence but im trying to use other systems , such you explained in videos...great...
As fascinated I am with the Cozio Defense, I'm not sure if I approve of it against a Ruy Lopez, seeing as defending the Queen-side Knight with 3... Nge7 logically implies you are looking to replace a fallen Knight if an exchange variation should happen. Even if not replaced, White's next 5 Nxe5? is an error due to Black's 5... Qd4! 6 Nf3 Qxe4+.
Thank you jrobi. The video is awesome. Your videos helped me to understand a lot and develop interest in chess. I used to play, but it was just a game for me. Now, it is something serious.
I can't help but think of Zukertort vs. Anderssen (They played two games, both ending in the same result) whenever I hear of the cozio defense. In both games, Zukertort used a knight + queen sacrifice to mate the black king. Please look into these games, as they are very fascinating. If you want a link, let me know.
hi jrobi, I've been watching your ruy lopez opening videos and was wondering whats wrong with black moving his pawn to A6 forcing the bishop back earlier in the opening?
Nothing is wrong with that at all - in fact it's another very popular variation of the Ruy Lopez. I plan on making a video on those variations in the near future. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Great vid!! My first chess mentor used to play the Cozio all the time. It was his only defense against the Ruy but he seemed to have no problems equalizing and winning with it. I would say this defense has a lot of merit if used as a surprise weapon because nobody studies it. In fact, I think this video is probably the best treatment of it one can find. Thanks for your effort!
So um, I see a lot of trades that would leave black double pawned without anything near to back it up. Why doesn't white do this? It looks so rewarding.
thanks for getting back to me so soon. I only asked for the morphy defense because it seems like the best, and incidentally, also the most natural move for black. In fact, 3) ...a6 is what i see most of playing the ruy lopez as white.
this opening is very similar to a scotch, which i understand very well, although the bishop rarely is best on b5 in such positions. The more I look at this the more I think a way for white to 'improve' is to not play 2. Bb5 :).
by the way, jrobi, its hard to say what the best chess engine in the world is because they all have various strengths and weaknesses. A big reason why rybka performs well is not so much its engine but its excellent opening book. Fritz will beat rybka in brute force calculation, but this involves 'forward pruning' which means it will miss deep zugzwangs (relatively rare). Furthermore, all computers are not that great in methodical long manouvering positions which these really are.
In the first version, white ends up with an isolated pawn on the D file. It seems to me that that's something black could exploit. I haven't read the other comments, so I apologize if this has been mentioned already, but it's what jumped out at me.
isolated d pawns are infamous for how not weak they are. Unless black can force a lot of exchanges, white 'accidentally' protects an isolated center pawn while he centralizes his peices. Meanwhile, the open lines greatly help the more mobile player, and the d pawn is hard to fix, it is mobile itself and participates in the attack.
The defence has advantages - it isn't played often, and creates interesting positional/tactical play.
In this defence, overall tactical awareness and positional play as opposed to memorized move orders will play a huge role in coming out ahead from the opening, moreso than other Ruy Lopez lines that are studied to a great depth.
After Qe2+( 3:50 )why not Be6 developing the bishop?. Black don't have to lose a tempo after 1.Qe2+ Qe6 2.Qd2 threatening Re1, if the Bishop will be on e6 instead of Queen.
Rybka 3 outplays Crafty handidly. It also won the Computer World Chess Championship 2008 a few weeks ago. That being said, Crafty is pretty good also, coming in at around 2700. Rybka 3, however, boasts an impressive 3150+.
I discount the reply after white's P-QB3/ because by then moving /P-QR3, Black has shown that the N-K2 as being a 'tricky' move, probably set up as a specific trap against someone.
On the other hand, /N-K2 really disregards the very fight for the center, doesn't it? Instead of playing for control of it, it's almost as if Black is holding hgis arms and hands over his head to protect himself from an avalanche (which wouldn't suffice very well, eh?) when he should be developing pieceS on board.
hey again ran a test with crafty using my line and black end up with a double iscolated d pawns so i wouldnt use this p.s im gonna start posting some chess vids on my games hope you can see them p.p.s its gonna be cool p.p.p.s what screen capture program are you using im going to use cam studio p.p.p.p.s will u make a video on the ponziani its a very good opening and ive won a lot of games with it, its my fave opening p.p.p.p.p.s sorry about my long message im probably making its worse with pp's

I decided to try out the Cozio in an internet game. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nge7 4.O-O a6 5.Bc4 Ng6 6.d4 Be7 7.d5 Nb8 and my opponent missed the chance to play 8.d6! (the game went 8.Nc3 d6 9.Be3 f5 with a good KID style position)
Klaman-Petuchov 1977 went 8.d6! cxd6 9.Nc3 and White won due to Black's serious structural flaws. But the alternative is 8...Bxd6 9.Ng5 f6 (9...O-O 10.Qh5 wins). The Ng6 is a poor K-side defender.
I suppose that is why Black is supposed to answer 4.O-O with 4..g6.
Really enjoyed the video, thanks a lot! There's a little typo in the video title, don't know if somebody already pointed that out or not :) But who really cares, right?
the first position that you showed (ends about 4:44) what do you guys think about the next move for white? im thinking 1. Bc4 pinning the knight to the queen and attacking the knight a 2nd time since it has only the queen defending it. Black would have to defend with 1... Nb4 2. a3 at this point it seems like black doesn't have a way to save his/her piece. correct me if im wrong.
Or 1... Rd8 2.Bxd8 Nxd8 immediately black goes down to pints. I might be missing something thou
Nice vid Jay as usual there are a lot of people wanting your take on the sicilian. I play the Ruy myself sometimes and I don't think I have ever face Ne7!?
Thanks for checking it out bruce. The Sicilian is high on my list too - it's one of the main plays by black I see as white after playing out the King's pawn.
It certainly is Jay. However there are so many lines after c5. In the Lopez it's white who decides on the opening after 2...Nc6 3.Bb5
In the sicilian if white plays 2.Nf3 there are so many black options. e6,d6,a6,g6,Nc6 and others. Good luck if you're gona take this on. It'll be a life's work!
after wathcing the vid i play a blitz as black and played the cozio defence, and won the game..i think my opponent was in unkown territory!now the cozio is my secret weapon.GREAT VIDEO and thanks!
found the video interesting, and glad to see that you do serious research for your videos. I have continued to improve my skills and appreciate your vids.
will do, chief. But it's a month from now so gotta wait for a good bit.
I'm actually in a match right now where me and my opponent have started with the Lopez fashion, but he just castled. Gonna try attacking him from the backside with the bishop lure to rook/queen checkmate.
Ok, thanks. I have been wondering this for some time, so I'm just going to ask now.How long do your games normally last and about how much time do you spend with things dealing with chess? Oh yeah, I just faced somebody, who caught me off guard (then killed my queen & knight). Using a tactics I say from some one of your videos, I easliy found holes and destroyed him (YEAH!). What is the difference between strategy & tactic in chess? So, thanks and keep making those videos.
7:34 - h3 looks like a waste of tempo. In fact, I think White should probably castle queenside and set up a formation that would be used to fight the Sicilian Dragon with pawns on e4, and f3, knights on d4 and c3, bishops on e3 and b3, and the queen on d2. The black kingside is down one defender (knight on f6) and the c-file is not available for black to respond with a sharp queenside assault.
Interesting idea - I think H3 is played there to prevent the bishop from taking advantage of that complete diagonal. I don't think it would be a waste of tempo, but it's definitely defensive in nature.
Interesting video. I did not really know a lot about the Cozio Defense before. I thought of it as being a crouching defense but you demonstrated lines also where Black trades on d4 and plays ...d5 countering in the center.
My only complaint is that most of the first 2 minutes of the video is redundant, and would be better spent discussing 4.d4 and how Black demonstrates equality(?). 4.d4 should have been included in the discussion of what White's best 4th may be along with 4.c3,4.Nc3,4.O-O.
It was very new to me also - so while it took a long time to research (the depth of 16 for each move in the total line took a very long time) it was exciting to learn about it when cross referencing with available book lines and the database. As for the first 2 minutes, I have this habit of talking a bit too much in the beginning, but I like to share the background. I will try to shorten that down a bit in the future.
Thanks Bobitoz - this one definitely took awhile. I found it interesting that the published lines I was able to dig up didn't hold much water when compared to the database and computer analysis. But there isn't much to go from in terms of games played - so that's understandable. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Its useful to see the early variations in each opening line you present, rather than going deeply into a game. I'll add this one to my extensive library. Keep up the good work J!
Well presented & very clear. For my own personal use, this defence seems less beneficial than other routes. However, I'm not a good player to begin with so take that into account!
It's definitely less played - no doubt about that. Which has some good things to it in terms of playing against Ruy players who don't see it that often. The only negative aspect to it is that white has some definite options for strong positions.
@6:49 you leave the variation saying white is in a better position, but the knf4 creates a nice fork and continuation for black... Do black's chances sputter out after that?

In the Cozio after white castles then black does a3!, then what? Whites fucked. Maybe do some more research!

hei robi. nice video, in the Cozio Defense there is a nice trap with 4.c3 d6 5.d4 Bd7 6.O-O Ng6? 7.Ng5 h6 8. Nxf7 Kxf7... thanks anyway
supermariop2007 3 years ago
hey jrobi please make another video about 1 of your chess games
familyguy1231 3 years ago
Since white gets all the favorable positions, this opening benefits white. Black never really benefits from the Ruy Lopez in any variation :(
BrooklynNY1992 3 years ago
I suppose that is why Black is supposed to answer 4.O-O with 4..g6.

jrobi, due to the fact you like king's pawn opening, could you show an effective way to brake sicilian and french defense please ...
cuz ive been down too many times agaisnt those defenses ...
ohh and do you have something on the ponziani? ive watched another video and sounds a prety effective opening thx =)

Thanks for checking it out ilovexoxo69 - I will definitely take a look at that.
jrobichess 3 years ago
the first position that you showed (ends about 4:44) what do you guys think about the next move for white? im thinking 1.
I might be missing something thou
deadpoetic333 3 years ago
After 2. a3, I'd probably try b5 looking to continue Ba6 if I'm looking at it right.
Rdarkholme 3 years ago
Excellent video as always. I'll stick with Birds Defence(3 Bb5 Nd4) to the Ruy Lopez though because its easy to draw with
Tiwaking 3 years ago
Hey, I like this one because black has a better position. Unlike the other ruy lopez variations.
Kaillerasweapon 3 years ago
Nice vid Jay as usual there are a lot of people wanting your take on the sicilian. I play the Ruy myself sometimes and I don't think I have ever face Ne7!?
brucewallace2 3 years ago
Thanks for checking it out bruce. The Sicilian is high on my list too - it's one of the main plays by black I see as white after playing out the King's pawn.
jrobichess 3 years ago
It certainly is Jay. However there are so many lines after c5. In the Lopez it's white who decides on the opening after 2...Nc6 3.Bb5
In the sicilian if white plays 2.Nf3 there are so many black options. e6,d6,a6,g6,Nc6 and others. Good luck if you're gona take this on. It'll be a life's work!
brucewallace2 3 years ago
Cozio defense is the only way to not drop the pawn or get doubled pawns in recapturing.

Ah man - what is the Cozio (these variations never end)
I've been studying the Ruy Lopez lately and changed back to the Piano.
With the 2 being so similar - any chance of getting you to showcase the Piano.
Thanks so Much !!

will do, chief. But it's a month from now so gotta wait for a good bit.
I'm actually in a match right now where me and my opponent have started with the Lopez fashion, but he just castled. Gonna try attacking him from the backside with the bishop lure to rook/queen checkmate.

jrobichess 3 years ago

Robotman42 3 years ago
Interesting idea - I think H3 is played there to prevent the bishop from taking advantage of that complete diagonal. I don't think it would be a waste of tempo, but it's definitely defensive in nature.
jrobichess 3 years ago
nice video bro =)
but following ur line would be better
e knight takes c6 than b pawn takes c6?
i mean to remain the pawns line intact?
or it has some future problems to do that?
ilovexoxo69 3 years ago
Thanks for checking it out ilovexoxo69! Which line are you thinking of, under which primary move option?
jrobichess 3 years ago
Interesting video. I did not really know a lot about the Cozio Defense before. I thought of it as being a crouching defense but you demonstrated lines also where Black trades on d4 and plays ...d5 countering in the center.
My only complaint is that most of the first 2 minutes of the video is redundant, and would be better spent discussing 4.d4 and how Black demonstrates equality(?). 4.d4 should have been included in the discussion of what White's best 4th may be along with 4.c3,4.Nc3,4.O-O.
GreenCastleBlock 3 years ago
It was very new to me also - so while it took a long time to research (the depth of 16 for each move in the total line took a very long time) it was exciting to learn about it when cross referencing with available book lines and the database. As for the first 2 minutes, I have this habit of talking a bit too much in the beginning, but I like to share the background. I will try to shorten that down a bit in the future.
jrobichess 3 years ago
Thank you J. I can tell you put alot into this one. Keep up the great work.
Bobitoz 3 years ago
Thanks Bobitoz - this one definitely took awhile. I found it interesting that the published lines I was able to dig up didn't hold much water when compared to the database and computer analysis. But there isn't much to go from in terms of games played - so that's understandable. Thanks for checking out the vid!
jrobichess 3 years ago
Its useful to see the early variations in each opening line you present, rather than going deeply into a game. I'll add this one to my extensive library. Keep up the good work J!

Well presented & very clear. For my own personal use, this defence seems less beneficial than other routes. However, I'm not a good player to begin with so take that into account!
BarrelLifter 3 years ago
It's definitely less played - no doubt about that. Which has some good things to it in terms of playing against Ruy players who don't see it that often. The only negative aspect to it is that white has some definite options for strong positions.
