Someone please tell me what is so bad about socialism. Government with some responsibility to to citizens. Why do people pay taxes if not for some level of social intervention by the gov. It seems to me that if the human race wants tohave any level of true peace and prosperity our governments will have to move toward a more socialist structure.

The thing is, you can't have a socialist country without forcing at least someone to be a socialist. You KNOW that in a country of one million, at least someone is not going to want to go along with the program and so the only way to "make" them a socialist is by forcing (using violence) to do so.
Well the free market doesn't fall into that category. The free market is defined by the fact that all of the economic decisions in an economy should be voluntary. In a free market, you can be a socialist, a communist, a capitalist, or anything else under the sun. The important aspect is that it is all completely voluntary and doesn't rely on violence to force anyone to think or act in one way or another. It really is the only moral basis for an economy.
In western democracies governments have a monopoly on the legitimate use of force (read: violence) to enforce laws created by elected officials.
These laws include property laws, contract laws and regulations on the quality of products and services and safety of workers, customers, workplaces etc.
Without taxation governments would not have the means to enforce any laws. Without laws the free markets that produce all the wealth would not be able to function.

You aren't forced to be a citizen - just go down to the relevant government office and renounce your citizenship if you don't like paying taxes. If you are not a citizen in your country of residence/business that is also your choice, you can always move away.
In both cases if you have a choice to weigh up the advantages against the disadvantages and choose an alternative if you don't like the 'deal' that you have now.

That's similar to the argument I'm making about citizenship. You aren't forced to be a citizen - just go down to the relevant government office and renounce your citizenship if you don't like paying taxes. If you are not a citizen in your country of residence/business that is also your choice, you can always move away.
In both cases if you have a choice to weigh up the advantages against the disadvantages and choose an alternative if you don't like the 'deal' that you have now.

I don't know of a single (ONE) country where non-citizens living in that country aren't being taxed. I would never have become one myself if the choice were so simple, and I know that most people would also have opted out.
If Australia is one of these countries where non-citizens aren't taxed, well then I'm moving tomorrow.

You're aware that you can be a permanent resident of most nations and not be a citizen, yes? I chose to become a citizen because permanent residents, ie. non-citizens who have never sworn an oath, are taxed and oppressed just as readily as their "consenting" counter-parts, only more so. I don't see how they also consent to being taxed.
And if people are so willing to pay taxes, as you seem to claim, then there really is no problem, and then there's zero reason to make it mandatory.
