Please don't be paranoid, folks. I've been to the Yucatan three times in the last three years and I have yet to get a bad look, let alone anything dangerous. It is the safest part of Mexico and the people are kind, warm and very friendly. The crime is virtually non-existent. Any hint of violence gets blown out of proportion. If you want crime and violence you will find it just like anywhere else. If you want serenity and great food, this is your place.

People! please don't let television and news fool you! of course we have some crime in Mexico and there are some dangerous places, but that's mostly in the north of the country, most of the time news talks about Juarez for example.. that's 3500 km away from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, it's like crossing Europe! nothing is happening down there.. feel safe to come, you're very welcome!

Money to take------ Mexican peso or US dollars, There are banks and ATM Bank machines all over so I just use my bank card for money withdrawal, ---most run the cirrus network (Logo on back of your Credit cards and bank cards--says cirrus in 2 circles), check with your bank to see if your card is allowed to be used in mexico--- mine had to be switched to international usage. then use a bank ATM over a insta bank (More regulated and secure) ,

I have been there twice. And never have I felt completely safer. The Mexican people are warm and welcoming. Please remember, the bad stuff is at the border where the drugs are going in and out of. I understand if you had children the concern, but really it is quite safe. The whole country should not be penalized for what is going on up at the border.

Playa and all of Quintana Roo is safe if you stay with tourist attractions and don't attract attention. You can rent a Vochito in Cancun and drive all the way to Akumal, Tulum or even to Chetumal on # 307. Don't look anything but your basic tourista and you will be fine. Use a cajero automático (ATM) in a large supermercado (Cancun or Playa) and they will debit your bank account and give you pesos at the most favorable exchange rate. Pesos are better than dollars in Mexico.

To all who are wondering about Mexico, I vacation there all the time. I love Playa as diving is number one and the people are very nice. Remember there is crime in every town even in the one you are leaving. I have never once felt nervous of feared for my safety in Mexico. I highly recommend going and just have fun, relax it is a vacation. If you spend your life worrying about what can or might happen then life will pass you by.

Was at Playa Del Carmen several years ago. LOVELY! Friendly! Just don't be an "Ugly American" and treat people rudely. The Mexicans are a beautiful caring people and seem to really really like us. @JCVdude I currently live in playa del carmen, and i can assure you it's one of the safest places in all Mexico and even America, most of the media saying there are day light shooting is just for attention, THERE IS drugs in playa del carmen, as in other parts of the world, but as long as you stay safe and away from dangerous places you will be all right!! if you still feel insecure about visiting playa, then go to a little town called Puerto Aventuras, you will know what's heaven on earth!!!

Maple Ridge for one year (actually in Whonnock), and in a place called Fairview Hill in the city for another year working in Commercial Drive, the best two years of my life! People in Maple Ridge: Incredibly nice folks!!! And amazing scenaries and canyons. Playa, unfortunately is pretty sold out although, it´s still fun to visit, everybody has a great time.

as i am writing this i am about to leave playa del carmen. THs town sucks it has no character and it is mostly tourists shops and fat stupid american tourists who need to learn a thing or two about how rich mexico is it. This country is an important part of the world economy and its GDP (PPP) is 1.555 trl. No poor nation has figures like that. If you want a beautiful town go see volladolid or campeche.

Seriously? Playa is very safe. Cancun is too, from what I hear. Just don't go to the non-touristy back streets at the dead of night and don't piss in public. Oh yea, don't have sex on the beach and you'll be good.

we read this advise before flying into cancun: make no eye contact, don't let anyone grab your luggage, keep walking. a bus like we found helpful is ADO, (pronounced ah-de-oh), and its not so bad, just be smart. and playa is beautiful! enjoy!

Don't worry. Most of the crime is in cities right across the border. I was in Playa del Carmen in december it was awesome. Trust if you take the time to get to know locals you will fall in love with Mexico. I am going back this summer.
