If we allowed competition to flourish instead of stopping it, it would be WAY cheaper. In CA where I live, I can only buy insurance from 6 companies! The 8th largest economy IN THE WORLD, and I can only purchase from 6 companies! How is that competition? Look at auto insurance. How cheap is that? Why? Competition. There are plenty of examples of why competition would fix this.  But we ARE broke. We spend more than we make. That is the definition of broke!

You remove the existing federal laws that prohibit existing health insurance companies to solicit business outside state lines! The federal government is the reason costs are so high! If you do tort reform, that would DRAMATICALLY reduce the cost of the insurance that doctors have to carry! That is why things cost so much, because of government mandates! Look it up! The healthcare bill that is going to be voted on is crap. The public option and medicare buy-in is out, however the rationing of care is in. The new bill will put a limit on the amount of services you can recieve per year. So, no lifetime cap, but a yearly one. Gotta love how they have quit talking about it in major media. tort reform is highly successful in Texas, however it is only part of the solution of course. Malpractice insurance in Texas is only a 1/3 of what it used to cost, we've attracted 10000s of doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. There's so many hospitals opening in Houston its ridiculous.
