As soon as Evita debuted on stage in the 70's it went into pre-production with just every director and big star (Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, Meryl Streep) attached at some point but all attempts just fizzled out. Michelle Pfeiffer gor the role but got pregnant and had to drop out. Alan Parker didn't have much faith in Madonna and so the 10-page letter she wrote him basically convinced him that she could play the part and would concentrate only on the film whilst shooting.
