you should read black mirror. its lengthy and just about as good dark gritty writting as moores. ..well not AS good as moores writting or this story but snyder is very good and if one of your problems with this book was that it was short black mirror might be your cup of tea.
If Alan Moore saw this 'review' (50% plot re-cap), with every sentence punctuated by 'LIKE' he’d cringe. Moore stated that in this comic his input was bettered by the graphical work of Bolland. But a sub-par Moore combined with a superb Bolland results in something that deserves a better than: "some positives about the book..."
No resolution? That's a sign of its courage - most Hollywood films have a sugar-coated resolution, but the real classics (Chinatown, Casablanca, Watchmen) rarely do.
@phealy02 Someone is a little butt hurt. I actually say that for every comic I review; not sure why you have such a problem with me stating a few positives. And you're rather silly if you think none of those movies have a resolution.
I disagree with you when you say that this is the birth of Oracle because I feel it wasn't what the Joker did to Barbara that made her Oracle I think it was how she reacted to it that did that. I think the true birth of Oracle is the moment that Barbara Gordon decided that she wasn't going to let being paralysed control her life and that she was going to do what she wanted to do with her life which we don't really see here because we don't really get to see much of her reaction in this book.
@GaEv4 I didn't mean it as her literally becoming Oracle or her mental transition to becoming her. This is what marks her end at Batgirl and the next transition of her life is Oracle. If she wasn't shot she probably never would have took that next step.
I had a similar experience with 'The Killing Joke'. It was very good. But when I finally did read it, I had read so many stories that told what happened in and around the book that I wasnt at all surprised. I dont remember which story it was but one told about how Diana and Zantanna knew she was going to be hurt , but couldnt stop it happening. They took her out to have fun and told her the mythology about the oracle. Then she goes to visit Dad...
@jonnynozzer Hey man that's pretty rude to say something like that to someone who's taking their honest time into doing a review for a book. You should never even joke about stuff like that. Anyway, great review AntiAiChan. Hope I see you at a Con in California sometime.
Hey AntiAiChan!!!!! Do you have plans to do "Batman:the long halloween?" I only ask because sooooooo many BatFans Keep telling me how God damn great it is and i'm too lazy to read it myself and would rather watch a sparkling review of it done by you.
@agentsakur9 ffffffffff Thanks Ben. lol I really want to read it since I've heard great things too but 1, I'm low on money and 2, I can't find it in a library. Solution: buy it, let me read it, I'll review it and you can have it back... maybe.
@AntiAiChan In truth, and this will really stir some fans... But I kind of felt underwhelmed by The Dark Knight Returns and its sequel for similar reasons. Lots of hype for many years, so that when I finally cracked'em open, yea they are good - but they don't 'define the Bat' to me necessarily. To each their own I guess. :)
@sXeblues I agree! Everyone has different expectations and enjoys different styles. When everyone tells me that this book or movie is amazing, my standards are set much higher due to all the hype. I can admit it's good but I think I could live properly without reading too.
The afterword in it by Brian Bolland makes the middle panel on the last page out to be a mystery. The one where Batman and Joker are both laughing and Batman's arm is stretched out to the Joker but you can't see what his hand is doing. I just assumed Batman had his hand on joker's arm. But he plays it off like it could be something else. Did you, or anyone else see it different?
@hentrips1 I enjoy ruining things that I love so I completed Brian's final sentence in the afterward: As our protagonist stood there in the rain laughing at the final joke, the police lights reflecting in the pools of filthy water underfoot, that Batman's hand reached out and slowly caressed the Joker's cheek, wiping away a single tear.
You speak to the problem I had with Killing Joke... There was so much hype all my life that it was THE Bats book. And when I got it, I really dug it - but I couldn't shake the feeling like: 'Wait, so that's it?' It's really good, as you say, but I doubt it's the greatest of them all. I've got both the hard cover (put away) and the soft cover. The soft cover stays out on my living room coffee table at all times. Now I just have to get a second copy of a Supes book to keep out and I'm set. ;D
@sXeblues I'm glad you agree! I honestly thought people might flame me for that but it's true; if something gets too much hype, it's near impossible for it to hit your expectations.
