  • compared to today's songs I'd rather listen to this at least this song has meaning unlike today;s music.

  • My father is a concert trombonist and professor of music who picked up the ukulele as a hobby last summer. I hear him sing and play this song on his ukulele every time I visit my parents' house, and now this song will always remind me of him!

  • Muy nostálgica version! Supe de esta canción cuando era adolescente gracias a Mitch Miller y su coro! Felices fiestas desde la Argentina!

  • We thought this style was the "cat's meow." It was too.

    flufrules

  • This shit is wonderfull. Theres nothing better than some good old music from the 30's!

  • I love music that is well done such as this. I am not from that time frame so it is hard to find jewels like this.

  • if Edwards' voice sounds strangely familiar, it should. He voiced Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio.

  • @fanofprotopic Thanks to that role, I'll always remember him as an important part of my childhood.

  • @fanofprotopic Yes, it's the same Cliff Edwards. He was hired by Walt Disney to voice and sing the Jiminy Cricket character in the 1940 Disney feature-length cartoon, "Pinocchio". Cliff spent the rest of his life and a second career working for Disney up until his death.

  • Love this version of a great song. Nice picture of Cliff with Bessie Love.

  • What tuning is that?

  • @TheMrOdagled

Cliff Edwards preferred concert Martin mahogany ukes (among others) tuned to F, A#, D,G. This is a couple of notes lower than the standard today of G,C,E,A. With Aquila strings, it works well, with less tension, and is more mellow.

  • @1848dragoon wonderful info. I want my ukulele to sound just like his!

  • @ShiningOne10

If you find the reduced tension of concert Aquila strings is not to your liking (on a concert scake uke) at F,A#,D,G, fit tenor scale Aquilas to it. The slightly larger diameter is higher tension at G,C,E,A, but is normal tension at F,A#,D,G. Possibly, the nut slots would not be quite wide enough, but hard to say without trying. There isn't that much difference. Experiment and see what suits you best. I like tenor strings on my cigar box concert scale uke for F,A#,D,G.

  • @1848dragoon I would have never thought of that! Thanks for the advice because I usually play a concert. What size did Edwards play?

  • I love you dad ,and miss you so much xxx

  • cooperandfriends - I'm a male old coot, but I cried for you tonight. I too had a precious mother.

  • Great rendition of a timeless song. Thanks for sharing! and thanks to YouTube

    for making all this possible.

  • Wonderful song!!

  • This is shear brilliance. The arrangement Joe Brown used

  • Pleasing version of this memorable song. Your video postings have great sound.

  • My favorite version of this song. Beautiful!

  • Sincerely, is a very lovely song.

  • Thanksss Lee, love it!!:-)))

  • i love the sound of ukulele! i wish i could play uke :)

  • @monka1236 Anyone can play Uke. If you're going to play an instrument there's no easier place to start...well maybe a Kazoo.

  • @cdjames10 hahah:) you think so? maybe i'll try someday.

  • @monka1236 Absolutely. 4 fingers, 4 strings. It just makes sense.

  • Lovely; I love music from this era.

  • I always thought this was the best version of this song. The gal in the movie still is Bessie Love, who was also a very good ukelele player. She was in a couple of movies with Ike, including "Good News".

  • Good song, good singer. They were good in those days.

  • Cliff Edwards sang "When You Wish Upon A Star" in Pinocchio. Maybe somebody already mentioned this. :)

  • Django's version is still my favorite.

  • can anybody share, if available, the Jimmy Durante performance ?

  • grreat ssssong. thanks

  • His technique on the uke is pretty amazing.

SO NOW INSTEAD OF BEING THE YOUNG PRETTY GIRL FULL OF HOPE AND LOVE i AM A WISER SAD OLD FOOL. IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH WORTH THINKING ON THIS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE FOR YOU,AS IT IS FOR ME

  • Who wrote this lovely song ??

  • @GAZONO "I'll See You in My Dreams" was written by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn.

  • @LordWham ...Thanks for that...it had to be the wonderful Gus Kahn didn't it ??...

  • @LordWham ..Have a little listen to Al Bowlly..The Very Thought of You...I think you may like it...

  • @GAZONO Info ! You can hear it in "Marnie", a film ?1960-70? !

  • @GAZONO Gus Kahn

  • Great that Joe covered this.

  • So glad that Joe Brown chose this version to cover. Absolute class act

  • Fine Song!

    Thanks for Posting!

    Aloha from Hawaii!

  • My brother tells me that Ike was the voice of the Disney Jiminy Cricket in Pinnochio.

  • @elfinia he was indeed. He was also the voice of the leader of the crows in Dumbo amongst other things. A great voice, but sadly, like many others, he was killed by his addictions. :(

  • @octomonkey1980 I wouldn't say that he was killed by his addictions. He lived to be 76. He certainly did die broke and Disney paid for his funeral, but 76 was way above the average life expectancy back in 1971. Cheers...

  • @HotTimeHarv fair point Harv thanks 4 correcting me. Like yr vids btw :)

  • @octomonkey1980 Thanks for digging my vids! I've got a whole bunch of new stuff coming down the pike. Cheers...

  • I agree with antinotis - I thion k this is the song version uised on the CSI episode of April 8th, Could the song or Ukelele Ike be a clue to the mystery?

  • @TheAdmiralSulu Not sure if it is a clue; it was a hard to follow episode for me and kind of stupid since the CSIs seemed to be doing detective work, but alas even CSI has fallen for that. There was an old film projector going and the song was playing.

  • I love you Frankie,and yes you surely will.....(smile)

  • I came to this site because last night on CSI they featured this song and I believe it was this version. It was playing in the victim's house and then later it was on the CSI's ipod! I recognized it from YouTube.

  • Fabulous song - let's have a comeback of this type of music!

  • Ma sa una sega la gente...

Sei troppo avanti, come lo era lui...

  • Great melodies like this one, and words that tell a story; or have meaning.

When will the modern so-called singers get to understand what makes songs 'everlasting'?

  • Cliff Edwards! How I wish you were around today to bring us some REAL music and the joy of that great era.

  • Wonderful song! Thanks for posting this video. Cliff Edwards doesn't deserve to be forgotten!

  • lovely....thanks! :)

  • it's wierd cause the lyrics are so sad, but the melody is so happy... but then at the same time both are fused together in this happy-sad heartwarming tenderness

  • very sweet song

  • wonderful old songs...

  • I teared up, they don't make music this sweet anymore.

    God bless Ike!

  • Mother,

I miss you every minute of every day .. I dream about you. I bought your perfume and wear it at night now. I can finally get a little sleep. I'm taking care of Michele. I love you dear Tu Tu, you were the most wonderful mother .....

  • @Cooperandfriends I feel for you, please try and be strong,.You will never get over your loss, but you will learn to live with it, trust in the Lord . Rest assured ,your dear mother is always by your side watching over you, only a thought away, she wouldn't want you to be sad ,would she?,talk to her as you did when she was here,Don't, despair your Mum is still with you,and you will be one day reunited with her. You will get your reward for loving your mother so much.God Bless from Ireland.

  • oh. that made my heart smile. didn't expect that.

  • wonderful...a great american voice

  • have always loved this song and cliff edwards , i am so glad he is not forgotten , rip cliff

  • @bearcub410 I read that he died in poverty and his funeral costs were covered by former colleagues -very sad.

  • this might be the greatest song of all time.

  • This makes me smile warmly to hear such an oldie but goodie! Nice, thanks.

  • Jimminy Cricket resembles Ukelele Ike. My mother's favorite singer.

  • Towards the end of Cliff Edward's career he recorded the voice of Jiminey Cricket for Disney's Pinocchio feature film. He sang "When You Wish Upon A Star". Cigarettes in the headstock of string instruments started with the first smoking players and way before Keith Richards.

  • Written by Isham Jones, lyrics by Gus Kahn. This is the song that Gus Kahn is best known for. The Biographical Motion Picture fulmed about Gus Kahn's life by Warners starred Danny Thomas as Kahn, and Doris Day played the part of his wife. Released in 1954, it was titled "I'll See You In My Dreams" Great Song..

  • I have always loved this classic and really love the ukulele. If and when I ever learn to play one I guess I'll need someone to stand behind me, too, and chord it for me. LOL. This is a good one to dance to - would it be the Fox Trot ? I'm trying to nail that one down. Cliff is mighty fine here. Thanks so much for posting. -Paula

  • hey, hey, paula! get yourself a ukulele. they're easy and fun. and a lot easier to carry than a piano. ha!

    love,

    paula

  • wonderful!

  • It's the Bee's knees and Cat's Meow all in one - love this sweet song that always come bacck every Valentine's Day....

  • i think this song is just swell.. =]

  • Plz take it off I cry everytime I play this and I can't stop playing this.lol

  • the pic from 1:28-1:51, he's got the cigarette stuck behind the strings on the headstock...and we all thought Eddie started that!

  • Ukelele me, Cliff! Who the hell needs some half-baked heavy-metal guitar solo, when there's a ukelele around?

  • This is great--love the verse and the uke solo.

  • Great post. Cliff Edwards is getting quite a following 70 years on. His voice had quite a range. Thanks for the post and the wonderful montage.
