i saw this brilliant film at the continental cinema tottenham court rd. about 1961. i now have it on dvd. great story, and acting.not forgetting miles davis atmospheric music.
I love the movies that are made today; there is so much creativity coupled with technological advances; but the movies from yesterday can never be surpassed; they rely on the absolute power of the characters; their vision, their sense of timeless style, the integrity of their imagination, and their determination to live like decent human beings in the aftermath of a world war. Lino Ventura is a perfect example.
i dunno, i think they can be surpassed. i think in perhaps a decade, maybe less, the directors will get enough of playing with toys and focus on telling their stories. like they said about bergman's film persona: it is a knowledge. the only knowledge most film makers posses today is that of technology, but not what one can use it for. i dunno, i think-no i hope! that films will surpass their antecedents.
i saw this at a theater as part of a retrospective. could only watch about a quarter of it. davis' score gave me a literal panic attack. later saw, and of course it's a masterpiece of a movie.
Finally got around to viewing this. Great Film! I thought that this film stood out as one of the better French movies of it's time. With such a great plot. Worth the view fellow film lovers:)

Many thanks for your video of Elevator to the Gallows .
I like classical French movies very much.
Could you upload any other French movies with actors or actresses like as DANIELLE DARRIEU、FRANÇOISE ARNOUL、GÉRARD PHILIPE and MICHÉLE MORGAN.
Best regards
