Fair Warning was Eddie's album. David Lee Roth was awesome on this album. I remember when I first got this cassette after seeing "Unchained" and "So This Is Love" on MTV back in 1984. This was my 3rd Van Halen album (Diver Down was first then Van Halen I then Fair Warning, I didn't get 1984 until that December so my older brothers would stop griping about me stealing the tape, then Women and Children First and Van Halen II finished the catalog in early 1985).

David Lee Roth on the other hand continued with super hits: Just a Giggalo, and California Girls which were GREAT VIDEOS. I actually have a TOTALLY VIDEO playlist that highlights video work such as that at my TOTALLY MUSIC ARTIST CHANNEL.

As a musician, its funny to see the harsh criticism from so many about the playing ability. To me, an above average player that can write killer tunes will win over the speed king anyday. Luckily EVH combined both!!!

Most of today's music lacks any artistic talent because the record companies have so much control of an artists sound and direction. LIsten to Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC, BTO, Blue Oyster Cult, Van Halen, Nugent, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Priest, and they all have their own unique sound. You know their songs from the first notes you hear. Not that way today.

The longer I play guitar and the older I get, the more I notice some mistakes in EVH's playing. Like here, in this solo towards the end when he "climbs" up the notes, I hear some "finger tripping." Not being picky though. I notice EVERY guitar player doesn't play perfect 100% of the time and glad they don't. EVH plays like a bad ass.
@LedWilde yeah, you're right. EVH is no Michael Schenker or Uli Roth. i think on this track he was going for feel more than technical precision, he's improvising a lot. still a great track. but if you want to hear a really sloppy "guitar god," listen to some of Jimmy Page's solos.

@motleycrue24 you're entitled to your opinion. if you prefer EVH over Roth or Schenker, fine. but that's a little like preferring Justin Timberlake or Justin Bieber over Michael Jackson. EVH is a bad-ass and will go down in the Hall of Fame for bad-ass guitarists, but the lineage of his style traces directly to Schenker/Roth, who pretty much invented the heavy melodic school of playing. Yngwie is another example. So is (early) Iron Maiden.
@TheEarnold There is countless interviews where Ed referred to clapton as his main big influence also jimmy page and from what i know clapton was around way before any of those guys
@motleycrue24 ok, but Eddie doesnt sound anything like Clapton, who wasn't really doing hammer-ons like Roth was. In Trance was a huge influence on EVH, and its said that after the '76 gig where VH opened up for UFO, they started doing more originals. look, not saying EVH isn't awesome, just saying Schenk and Roth were just as heavy and far cleaner, and that they came first and were a direct influence on young Ed.
@motleycrue24 : even the little bit at the beginning of sinner's swing after the main riff where he's just kind of riffing,, the 'chuk-chuk' sound if you will, sounds a lot like what Schenker was doing with UFO in 1975, on "Mother Mary," off the Force it album. I will say that EVH is more flamboyant than either Schenk or Roth. but better? personally, i think Schenker is better than Jimmy Page in a technical sense. Stylistically is a more subjective criteria, i like them all, actually.
@motleycrue24 ; ok sure, there are a lot of bad mofo guitarists out there. EVH is better than Matthias Jabs,another 'flashy' guitarist, but in general the Germans are very technical players, all those classic scales. they are very consistent with their tone. i probably heard EVH before Schenker and Roth, and there's no disputing his musical talent...Eruption, the Hot for Teacher intro, the riff on "Little Dreamer"... 1st 4 VH albums are magical.

In VHs heyday, at least in NY, I never heard VH, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Riot (not quiet riot, just RIOT), Holocaust, Venom, Motorhead, Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, ect. The ONLY time I can remember stuff like this getting any REAL air play was on the King Biscut Power Hour(?) AND unlike now when you might get someone like me to name a bunch of bands so U could do a search on youtube, emusic, ect., if ya didnt meet someone in the know, you didnt find out

Most of today's music lacks any artistic talent because the record companies have so much control of an artists sound and direction. LIsten to Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC, BTO, Blue Oyster Cult, Van Halen, Nugent, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Priest, and they all have their own unique sound. You know their songs from the first notes you hear. Not that way today.

The longer I play guitar and the older I get, the more I notice some mistakes in EVH's playing. Like here, in this solo towards the end when he "climbs" up the notes, I hear some "finger tripping." Not being picky though. I notice EVERY guitar player doesn't play perfect 100% of the time and glad they don't. EVH plays like a bad ass.

@LedWilde yeah, you're right. EVH is no Michael Schenker or Uli Roth. i think on this track he was going for feel more than technical precision, he's improvising a lot. still a great track. but if you want to hear a really sloppy "guitar god," listen to some of Jimmy Page's solos.

@motleycrue24 you're entitled to your opinion. if you prefer EVH over Roth or Schenker, fine. but that's a little like preferring Justin Timberlake or Justin Bieber over Michael Jackson. EVH is a bad-ass and will go down in the Hall of Fame for bad-ass guitarists, but the lineage of his style traces directly to Schenker/Roth, who pretty much invented the heavy melodic school of playing. Yngwie is another example. So is (early) Iron Maiden.

In Trance was a huge influence on EVH, and its said that after the '76 gig where VH opened up for UFO, they started doing more originals. look, not saying EVH isn't awesome, just saying Schenk and Roth were just as heavy and far cleaner, and that they came first and were a direct influence on young Ed.

@motleycrue24 : even the little bit at the beginning of sinner's swing after the main riff where he's just kind of riffing,, the 'chuk-chuk' sound if you will, sounds a lot like what Schenker was doing with UFO in 1975, on "Mother Mary," off the Force it album. I will say that EVH is more flamboyant than either Schenk or Roth. but better? personally, i think Schenker is better than Jimmy Page in a technical sense. Stylistically is a more subjective criteria, i like them all, actually.

EVH is better than Matthias Jabs,another 'flashy' guitarist, but in general the Germans are very technical players, all those classic scales. they are very consistent with their tone. i probably heard EVH before Schenker and Roth, and there's no disputing his musical talent...Eruption, the Hot for Teacher intro, the riff on "Little Dreamer"... 1st 4 VH albums are magical.
