amazing find. I remember Joe Zito from Lancaster, I grew up one town away. Considering that he put up a good effort against Angle who went on to win the NCAA and an Olympic Gold I'm surprised Zito didn't seem to do much after high school. I think he went to Syracuse, maybe to concentrate on football, but I can't be sure.

Pennsylvania has always been the #1 toughest state to wrestle. Iowa comes second. And where i wrestle, Illinois is ranked 3rd for the toughest state to wrestle in. Kurt Angle had one of the best wrestling facilities in which gave him the advantage of being a gold medalist.

NY's decent, but PA was always the toughest state to wrestle in during the 80's and 90's. I wrestled in NYS in high school, also some PA matches and Canadians, and people from other states when in the Air Force. I watched Zito at states. A beast. I didn't even make the state tourney in NY but I've beaten place winners from Vermont, minnesota, MD, and TN. The rest of the country has been catching up to PA by learning from PA like at this tournament.

I wrestled in Maine--the NE states have some tough individual wrestlers, but overall quality and wrestling culture is an entirely different plane in PA and NY. I rolled some with a PA runner up last summer and more or less got thrashed.

in PA at the time the heaviest two weight classes were 185 and 275 for heavyweight. Most heavyweights usually weigh around 230 to 250. Rarely do you run into heavyweights that are at the limit. A teammate of mine wrestled 275 weight class while only weight 205lbs.
