1:41 That is an "inker" someone who inks all those little frames. Walt Disney had at least 60 girls, all lined up in rows inking frames for his masterpieces like Snow White, he called them his "ink girls" and was especially nice to them considering the mundane task they were set with
@83Berenike I disagree. Though i truly respect old fashioned animators to go through this work, i think its more about the actual drawing talent than the tediousness/annoying-ness. Flash animation should be just as recognized because it still depends on the persons drawing talent (unless its tweened or some bs). Just because its more efficient in time, it doesnt mean they can't draw (eg. see HarryPartridge). Plus it allows smaller teams to do the animation.
Thank god for graphic tablets. The animation process looks so boring and tedious. 2D animation is beautiful, but far to time consuming the old way. Now they have all the artistic qualities of the old 2D, in a fraction of the time. I mean, you stuff up while painting one of those cells, you'd think it would be a pretty big deal to get another one and start all over again, nowadays, you just CTRL + Z :P ...
Cel animation has really advanced over the years. At first it was just inking and painting the still on a piece of celluloid paper, then they started drawing the pictures, zeroxing the drawing on a cel. Honestly, whatever happened to traditional animation? ;_;
I was thinking about how people have been making cartoons recently such as Eureka Seven and Bleach and have so much animation as well as colors, shading and spoken text and story presented as well as order and story pacing. They must go through hell for making an episode a week, especially as long as they go on. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball. Especially since they use to do 2 episodes specials. They best be gettin' paid good.
@furyberserk well nowadays they do the animation on the computer, this is from when Sailor Moon first began to air in 1991, now there are many programs to animate on a computer ^_^
It does take a lot of work, just working on one episode of anime, or just a kid's cartoon can take up a couple of months or a year. I am currently working to be an animator, but for now I am an artist in college :)
@furyberserk Thanks, I hope to one day learn more of how to do anime on the computer, then I could become professional in the field, and maybe move to Japan and get a job thier :)
@alypkm if you think that is hard to draw then you have no idea how hard it is to comprehend how to draw the next frame and then the next to create smooth animation with the least drawings.
sugoi. this is why i like some of the older animations drawn by hand, a lot goes into it. CG ones look too fake to me and some done CG dont render circles properly
@williefleete Yeah, I prefer 100% hand-made anime myself. You also get a soft texture that hard to produce digitally. Sometimes digital can be too crisp, and I personally think 3D elements are overused in many anime today. The quality of the 3D often doesn't match the super-crisp 2D elements, and that sorta "fake" looking animation results. I love digital. I'm an digital artist myself. But I think traditional methods tend to have that nice hand-drawn personality to it that most today lack.
oh my god, that would take forever! don't they color them on the computer nowadays? that's save a lot of time, eliminating the people having to paint every one. i also read that for sailor moon it'd take around 5000 of those individual drawing things per episode!
@creamsodaboy Japan maybe? No idea. Especially since these days nothing's painted like this anymore you'd probably have a lot of trouble finding one new.
I want this in Eng. Someone, please sub this!

God love the magic of new technology. Man. animating the old fashioned way seemed too difficult to even bother with! >o< *sniff*

Screw computer animation. This is how it has to be done. Otherwise it doesn't deserve any merit or recognition whatsoever.

@furyberserk Yeah hard to believe how much goes into a single frame, and that there are 24 of them in a single second. Makes live action seem easy.

@adamrulz anime usually has 12 frames per second :)
