If you think this is amazing check out the first movement of Alkan's Concerto for Colo Piano op. 39. Most people just notice the last movement and overlook the first movement. It's my favorite piece of music.
Both melody and harmony are really simple in this étude... But it's still great, really beautiful, and looks hard to play (at least as Ringeissen does)
Yes! Alkan definitely deserves more mention .Sad in his day even this wonderful adn brainy music was not heard.God,Thalberg,Henselt a lot ofMoscheles isnot worth the paper they are printed on but all of op.35 has merit.Op.39 I have- these i had not seen or heard before. And this was not too taxing or too long.
ALKAN is da man Phillip ,Busoni,Ogdon many English piainists seem to know of him.Busoni must have been jealous of Scryabin or just really thoughtda music deathly.
@lovesGenet Pardon me, though it's been a year since your comment, I find it incredible that you insult three fine Romantic composers for writing music that isn't "worth the paper" it was printed on. Considering the sheer amount of musical shit that Alkan committed to paper, this piece included, I think you'd find it in your heart to forgive the other three for their less-inspired moments.
That chord is made up of Breves. They last the same than two whole notes, and they are also called "Double whole notes". They were used in early music ( < Renaissance), and they are rarely found in more modern music.
So epically difficult and so beautifully perfect. I love Alkan!

and Alkan critics say his compositions are just show-off pieces and have no music to them. I beg to differ.
juufa72 3 years ago 6
That's what many Liszt critics claim about his compositions as well. It's just a form of envy of course.
regiear1991 3 years ago 5
Yeah, libestraume, waldesrauchen sonata in b, I can´t understand why some say that liszt is just notes!?
addeex1 3 years ago 5
Yeah, it pisses me off. Criticism that takes the "show off" route is just a form of envy.
regiear1991 3 years ago 4
Some of his pieces are like that. But every composer wrote a few show-off pieces.
