the same thing just happened to my buddys jeep. it almost caused a forest fire but the fire trucks showed up just in time to spray down the jeeps. it started the same way from what we can tell. the jeep was working really hard and as soon as we put it in reverse nothing happened exept for flames. i was riding shot gun and when it happened i was looking out the window and almost right away there were flames up past the window. everyone got out alright but i wouldnt recomend an automatic jeep
My 2008 Grand Cherokee burned in my driveway all by itself and I have it on Youtube to prove it. it was electrical in the front of the engine on the passenger side....
shit man, throw it in neutral and role it into the sea, stick a dry chemical extinguisher under the car, that will at least smother most of the extent of the fire, i dry an XJ Jeep and i know they have their issues so i always drive with a loaded dry chem extinguisher and a wrecking bar to pull the bonnet up if it fails, your just asking for trouble driving without emergency gear
all im saying man is all cars have there issues, my XJ has been a dream but i always go prepared anyway, the last thing you want is a $100,000 land rover, and the emergency petrol canister in the back catches fire, and your stuck with no emergency gear to get you out of the situation, i know my 2008 mazda 3 wont catch fire driving around the city, but i always keep a dry chem fire extinguisher just in case
if it wasnt a hummer who "tryed to help" then maybe they would have dragged in the water or something. Looks like all the hummer did was film it. Put sand on it pull it in the water, use a fire extinguisher something!
That sucks..... Ive watched one of my dirt bikes go up before.. But a 4x4 would be worth more and be alot more painfull.. Plan to go out there soon with my sierra I just picked up few weeks ago :)
Yep I saw one a month ago on fire on a beach in Brisbane some of my footage was shown on TV, beleive it or not yesterday I saw another on fire on the highway staying away from these death traps!
Always huh? Over 198K on my old 92 and I dogged the hell out of it. I never had one problem with over heating. So... Always... I don't think so. I've ran mine up to redline and pulled the transmission into gear and never damaged the engine or transmission. I've ran it full throttle for 20 min straight going to the hospital doing somewhere around 95-100mph. I bent a rod. Then drove it back on 5 cylinders and parked it for a month. Then traded it in for my POS Mazda B2500.
once burnt prol figured let it burn and get the insurance payout rather than risk injury trying to put it out. makes you want to buy a fire extinguisher - fast!
with fire dripping under the engine onto the sand, wasnt worth risking, driver did the right thing, getting his family out and then some items. Plus can you imagine telling the insurance company you drove the truck into the ocean, probably they wouldnt pay any insurance.
i came across the exact same thing in country NSW, engine compartment fire, bonnet latch failed, the only thing he had going for him was the fact the council were doing road works and had a bulk water carrier nearby, all doors auto locked and he couldn't get into the cabin...
HAHAHA yeah... thats why my cherokee had 398,000 miles on it when i sold it and the guy who bought it 5 years ago is STILL driving it with the ORIGINAL engine and trans

I've been driving past that burned out jeep for months on stockton beach. Ive often wondered how it happened! Last time I went past it somebody had rolled it onto its roof and removed the wheels.
Tranny fluid isnt flammable. Whatever the probe was with that jeep wasnt tranny fluid. It would smoke if it dripped onto something hot, but its not going to burn that truck down. The smoke was blackish....so maybe the engine got so hot it burned something in the engine compartment? rubber or plastic.
My mom's old '95 cherokee country's tranny blew and spewed oil. We could tell there was something wrong with the truck since it wasn't shifting eventually it started spewing white smoke and we just pulled over and jumped out. I guess the trannies are faulty
@australianhummer I will never buy a jeep cherokee after seeing this electrical fire gone wrong do you think Jeep knows they have a problem with there cars catching fire in my my mind I will think from now on jeep catches fire and keep away from riding in one of these fire pron 4x4
No this does not happen fairly often. I have been around the XJ Cherokee for year and have never seen a fire under the hood. Yes they do run hot and you will see this on the temp gauge. If this was a fairly often problem I would not drive one with my family onboard. From what he said, the transmission line may of broke, which could happen in any car. Main thing is no one was hurt.
Exactly. I've been working on Jeeps and especially XJ's since 1988. Never have seen any sort of fire in that time. This is likely the 4.0L I6 with AW4 transmission. The AW4 is one of the best autos ever made. It was so far ahead of it's time in many aspects. The hardlines are pretty tough.
If you overheat automatic transmissions, bad things are going to happen. Period.
I searched and seems this happens fairly often in this jeep, wonder if they have looked into it, it would only be a matter of time before someone is hurt. Driver said the truck didnt over heat but noticed it was working hard, he thinks one of the transmission line broke and sprayed oil on the engine starting the fire, it went up fast as you can see...
@australianhummer this is some amazing footage australian hummer, thankyou for uploading it. I will stay clear of this Jeep. My next car will be a JK Wrangler.
I drove the family back to a service station where a friend was coming to pick them up, I could'nt really take them home (although I offered) but we have 8 people in my truck and and only 6 seat belts...they were shak'n up but ok, they had insurance but didnt think it would be valued too much, they had a son and little baby girl who was asleep, they had enough time to grab most of there gear,
For an engine fire, never pop the hood. It increases the oxygen and the fire intensifies. Spray through the radiator and up from the bottom of the engine depending on intensity. Generally, with a hand extinguisher, if you don't get it knocked down in secinds, kiss the vehicle goodbye!
Makes me think I'll buy a fire extenguisher for my Jeep !!! No joke if a fuel line break in the wood... Txs Youtube for the intelligent idea !!!

I would better drown it in the sea, than let it burn. at least something could have been saved..maybe..
MozemVasJebac 2 years ago
If it is a small engine fire, you could have thrown sand on it to smother it. Enough sand, and it would cove up the burning fuel.

I doubt it is engine combustion the ignition starts from inside and rear od the car if it wasn't electric spark it will be human burning

Question, was the Jeeps ignition switched off and keys removed? Curious.

Transmission fluid is flammable at high temperatures. I've seen many fires start by transmission lines leaking around exhaust manifolds.
