Surya summed up Kwan's greatest programs before Kwan ever competed in the senior ranks: Salome, The Feeling Begins, and Scheherazade all in this program!
@bryan21tx Can you please tell me, what is the piece of music that starts at 2:15? The name and who it's commonly performed by, if you know. Thank you.
Bonaly was a real challenger, and we have to appreciate her effort. I often feel umcomforrtable when I see no dark skined skaters in the world competition games.
@dicionarioify, I'm a bit puzzled by your comment. What makes you feel uncomfortable about not seeing dark-skinned skaters in world competitions? The sport's not popular in African countries, and in western countries, where skating is more popular, lessons and rink fees are expensive. Blacks, on average, earn less than whites (for any number of reasons), so their low numbers in skating, on average, shouldn't be surprising. I don't understand where you're coming from.
@metsdudenj You've obviously never heard of Debi Thomas - African American and World Figure Skating Champion in 1986 - the ONLY skater to actually beat the legendary Katarina Witt in the 5 competiion seasons 84, 85, 86, 87, 88.
@npe1 Black athletes traditionally are not strong in skating and swimming. I know all too well about Debi Thomas, the skater who beat Katarina Witt when she fell in the SP at the 86 worlds. One athlete among 400 million black people in the world.
@metsdudenj Hmmm - black skaters have won more international championship titles than Korean skaters or Polish skaters, but I don't hear you putting forward irrational racial stereotypes there. No Japanese skater won an international medal up to 33 years ago when Minoru Sano won bronze in '77 Worlds, how times have changed. A person's race has absolutely nothing to do with their ability to skate or indeed their ability to do any sport or anything for that matter.
Blacks have denser bodies and denser bones so they dont float as easily so that is why they are not made for swimming. In terms of Skating, they are also usually too thick for it as well.
@metsdudenj And what has bouyancy got to do with figure skating? Incredible as it may seem to an ignorant racist like you, we actually skate over frozen ice and we don't swim in it! Muscle density - well again as strange as it may seem to a non-skater like you, we actually need very strong and dense muscles to take off for triple and quad jumps - have you ever seen a skater's legs?
i thought you arent allowed to have music with lyrics in ISU competitions. here she skates to dies irae by verdi, and there are 'lyrics', though they are in latin. is that allowed? anw, its a shame she didnt land the quad, i would have loved it to be her to land it, she works v hard on her jumps. but anyway, just the bravery is inspirational, to risk doing quads in a competition.
Its sad that she crashed and burned throughout her overall program, but she managed to struggle through despite stumbling with some landings. I feel so bad for Surya. This certainly wasn't her best day and performance yet. But still she's my inspiration.
I loved how tacky the music selection was for this program. Not only did she NOT use the music what-so-ever with her lack of choreography, the cut from "A Feeling Begins" from Peter Gabriel just anonymously appeared musically in the program... right out of nowhere. What even more funny is the fact that she did not attempt to put in any choreography with this beautiful music.
@ fiercefunky, it's The Feeling Begins by Peter Gabriel. It's from The Last Temptation of Christ OST.

@bryan21tx Don't forget about the last small bit of Spartacus at the end

Why does she go for quads when she can't do a triple axel?
Cheydow 1 year ago
@ Cheydow: because the toe-loop (along with the salchow) is an easier jump than the axel.

That is ridiculous. We all know black athletes don't do well in sports assocaited with water, either fresh or frozen

@metsdudenj What utter nonsence! And your scientific evidence for all these sweeping stereotypical racist comments is exactly what?
npe1 1 year ago
@npe1 Check online for bouyancy rates and bone density and muscle denseness

I would have loved to see Surya land the quad. She needed more speed on that salchow. Her toe at the 1991 worlds was way close.
