@777system777: He occasionally sings the ending (rarely, however). Back when he was part of the Smiths, he probably didn't sing so people would be able to here Johnny Marr playing that final guitar riff- a good move, in my opinion, since the riff is absolutely amazing.
@Shyyrn Thanks Shyyrn, I always thought it was maybe so the audience would sing it for him, as they do now, but in the smiths days that didn't happen so much. However I agree with you and Mozza certainly had great respect for Johnny in those days..."the draize train" appearing on "rank" proves this beyond doubt as Mozza chose the track list.
Hand in Glove isn't really a love song. In the song Moz describes the person (Johnny) as being more of a rare and precious object to him than a person, someone who is only his, it's an obsession, not an infatuation. "If they dare touch a hair on your head I'll fight to the last breath." That's not love.
thats definitely arguable. i mean isnt fighting to protect someone a testament to love? plus moz specifically says "love" in that song. i don't really see this song as a love song, but rather a sad account of the narrator's desperation and loneliness to the point where he doesn't care about life anymore
I cried the first time I heard this albeit I was feeling a bit "sensitive " then ( got TQID on day of release and played it to death) it still has the same effect upon me now.
Timeless, brilliant, sad and somehow joyful at the same time.
i think if i had their set list at my disposal i would have played there is a light last...it would make for such a mighty send of...but i don't think playing it 5 songs in really complements the greatness of it
I agree but we have the benefit of hindsight... at the time this was an album track and now we can see it obviously should have been a single... but i guess when you write a classic you dont automatically know it. I always think that of people that watched The Godfather at the pictures back in 71..and they thought they were just popping to the flicks! (insert any film you like there, I just happen to like The Godfather)
The Smiths were great and still they are. Timeless music. Today you can hardly find anything equal to that and then Morrissey comes in. Morrissey is an angel send by the Man upstairs to bring us comfort. I find consolation in his singing
So true, they all contribute to this great sound of the Smiths. There is no doubt that Moz and marr are geniuses, but Andy and Mike deserve some credit too.
Johnny Marr was amazing, but how can you listen to these lyrics and possible come to the conclusion that he WAS the smiths? I can only assume words don't mean much to you?
The beatles, the smiths, the stone roses, oasis all fukin legendary but who is taking up the mantle i would of liked to say arctic monkeys but their second album was shite im starting to worry!!!

The first one is awful. Clearly they were not at their creative peak. Some songs in there are fantastic, but some aren't, and the album in general is subpar, sonically speaking.
On most days, I'll listen to their singles and the last three albums.
To be honest I think their first album was their second best after the Queen is Dead, it's personal opinion though, while I think Meat is Murder has some brilliant songs, I think it has some weak ones, though I still enjoy it, Louder then Bombs is brilliant
i think your right some of the mixing and the production was average, but that was due to time and money restraints, i think the debut LP is amazing personally, and the crux of the album, This charming man, hand in glove and what difference does it make, their three of the best, also their are some understated gems like suffer little children and reel around the fountain. Thats my opinion anyway.
I love Beatles, Smiths (obviously), Stone Roses and Oasis, but Arctic Monkeys are alright compared to them. I don't hate them, but I find them a bit dull musically - they don't really have a tune you can hum to like the rest of them.
i love his "your side!"
