Listeners should have swallowed that pill called pride and given ray a chance.. Phil had done a runner.. What were they expecting the mortal Tony Banks and Mike to do? Clone him and grow a new Phil in a test tube?!
As a lifetime Genesis fan, I think it’s a scandal that Banks/Rutherford squandered Ray Wilson’s talent. Who cares that Calling All stations didn’t do well in America? Who cares about such populist nonsense? Surely the point of art is to produce beautiful music, and to hell with what the critics say? Just think what could have developed if they’d have a 2nd and 3rd album? Ray Wilson is a good writer, and I urge you all to see him live. I did a couple of years ago.
@Robocopmad Well, Its some sort of metaphor where this guy is compared to jesus. At each step he takes people gets kinda renewed, turning selfish people into polite and comprehensive ones...
I think Ray Wilson was a pefect replacement for collins and noone gave them a chance to gel and the stations gave them no airtime whatsoever, collins,No genesis pleaseeeeeee,Gabriel was The Main man and The lamb tour was never to be bettered again when he left.......
Calling all Stations is a brillian t work that was victim of an always ignorant prog rock fan base and an even more ignorant Genesis fan base.
It had such a fresh sound, it was modern, current and with great songs. Ray Wilson could easily be with Genesis today: great singer, excellent composer.
The band wouldn't have to drag a retired Phil Collins on stage to be newsworthy or musically relevant if they had sticked to Wilson.
I'm from Mexico City and love any Genesis line-up. I love every album, every song and every stuff they made. I think Calling is a grat album and like wilson's voice. Obviously, the songs in Calling all stations are made for his voice and I think they sound great. Ray has not fault, the album din't sell well in our continent. But, is a great record. Specially this song.
I just miss the dynamic that Genesis used to be all about. Still it's a beautiful song and I don't care who's singing in the band. I can't really tell what's wrong but there is something missing...
totally agree ray did a creditable job with genesis, remember its the whole generation that choose who they prefer to like, there are still some die hard fans who love them no matter what.i happen to be one.
they were not Genesis with Phil. A great prog-rock band became another pop group for radio stations. This record was much better than anything with Phil...
I wish I could do what that long-haired guy could do. Passes people by and they drop. It's funny. Besides that, I liked the video. I wished there was more Genesis with Ray. He wasn't compariable to Phil, but he did good.
Although I'm a big fan of all genesis albums including this one.....I believe that Phil wouldn't be able to sing this song as I believe Ray made it his own.....and he had input in the song writing on this trak aswell......One song I would of loved to see Phil sing on there reunion was Shipwrecked...I really do think he could of made that a beautiful song.......not saying that Ray didnt....but when it comes to love songs or a little bit depressing Phil can sing them.lol
Now, admittedly I prefer older Genesis (the older the better, in fact- I'm definitely a Gabrielite at heart, although I <3 Phil Collins too) but there were certainly some good songs from the Ray Wilson period, and this is one of them IMO.
Interesting question. First, I don't remember whether or which songs Ray has writing credit (copyright). Ditto for the sound recording and the video rights. Tony and Mike didn't have to grant Ray Wilson any rights; although it would seem odd, they could have still had Collins onboard for rights and royalty payments. Yes, an enigma wrapped in a drum kit!
Hmmm...come to think of it, Ray Wilson was actually the lucky one. Genesis wants us to think that the drums played themselves during this time period.
Not entirely agree. Trick Of The Tail and Wind & Wuthering were great albums...proof that the band could carry on w/o Gabriel. We Can't Dance was another album that had a mix of both commercial & artistic songs.
While Gabriel was definitely more in the "prog-rock" style and Collins more "pop", both were tremendous, and actually I think Wilson fell somewhere between the two of them in his style of singing---I thought Calling All Stations was a great record. I always felt, for me, that Tony Banks was the real musical soul of Genesis anyways. one of the greatest bands ever in my book. Saw them in Chicago in the fall of '08---well worth the 16 hr round trip!
Great Song and great video. I think that Genesis with Ray Wilson had return to a decent music, full of creation and really better than witk Phil Collins. Maybe the best LP since Peter Gabriel cause, this is a return to music...
I'm deceived that Tnoy Banks and Mike Rutherford didn't keep Ray in Genesis...
couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!! This new genesis couldve lasted for another few albums at least, and they would have been better, since ray would have been at the band at the start of the writing process.
Banks and Rutherford have said that during the time Ray Wilson was singing they didn't particularly care about making it in the chart, just getting back to writing music. Given that five odd years after Genesis' hiatus they returned with a new singer, people weren't particularly impressed. I will always adore Collins/Gabriel Era, but "Calling all Stations" Album is actually half-decent, and Ray Wilson is a great singer.
This song would sound awesome with PHiL's voice also.
I don't dislike Ray Wilson... He will always go down as one of the Genesis singers, but the hardcore Genesis fans (one's from the 70's) only like Pete and the (80's fans) like Phil and even Peter. Phil could sing pete's songs and the fans didn't disagree with it b/c it sounded much the same. (completely different personalities though).
Ray felt jolted by his Genesis experience...can you blame him? He was in a lose/lose situation.
This video is really depressing. It kind of seems that it reflects on the bad parts of life. It reflects about what we think we're fighting for the right reasons when we aren't and that is depressing.
For the people that did not give this album a chance, you are the ones who stop Genesis recording anymore albums with Ray.. I myself Like this album. It still has a hit of original Genesis sound to it.
Slightly unfortunate editing has Banks and Rutherford looking on stone-faced as the old lady goes flying. An unwitting metaphor for the Thatcher's Britain corporate monster they ended up being.
It is Genesis, just a slightly different one. Ray Wilson replaced Phil Collins on the album Calling All Stations which I think was tragically overlooked and actually features some fantastic material. Ray Wilson is also superb in concert, performing many classic Genesis songs alongside his own - well worth catching.
it reminds me of the jargon commonly propagated by christianity, actually.. if i didn't know any better, i'd guess genesis had some religious intentions..
who wrote this song anyway? it sounds pretty good..
Yeah, like I've always said, if this was made by someone other then Banks/Rutherford, and it was just another record people would love it. It's just being compared to old Genesis. Granted, it's nowhere near as good, but I enjoy parts of Calling All Stations.
Listeners should have swallowed that pill called pride and given ray a chance.. Phil had done a runner.. What were they expecting the mortal Tony Banks and Mike to do? Clone him and grow a new Phil in a test tube?!
