Lots of cities do summer outdoor concert events in public areas (which are usually free to anyone), but then you're not allowed to walk on stage just because it's in a public park. Public schools are technically public property, so does that mean any person can come and just walk around a school during school hours? No. There are laws about being some place even on public property.

Wow, this is unbelievable. Usually, I defend the actions of the police against the people here but I don't believe this was justified. I don't see how a permit to gather in a park gives you the authority to kick out anybody in the park you don't like. Do the Gay Pride people own the park, otherwise how do they have the authority to determine if a person is trespassing on that land unless they own it? I'm probably dumb for saying this but I don't think this action was justified.

It is still a public sidewalk even if the park is "rented", just as the sidewalk at gov. buildings are public walks open to protesters. Or do gays have special rights?

In these situations, the sidewalk adjacent to the event becomes "private" and the people with the permits can tell you they don't want you loitering or protesting there. They didn't say he couldn't protest, they just didn't want him directly in front of the event. Protesting across the street was perfectly fine. He is still visible, just not in a place where he could block people.

Lots of cities do summer outdoor concert events in public areas (which are usually free to anyone), but then you're not allowed to walk on stage just because it's in a public park. Public schools are technically public property, so does that mean any person can come and just walk around a school during school hours? No. There are laws about being some place even on public property.

Wow, this is unbelievable. Usually, I defend the actions of the police against the people here but I don't believe this was justified. I don't see how a permit to gather in a park gives you the authority to kick out anybody in the park you don't like. Do the Gay Pride people own the park, otherwise how do they have the authority to determine if a person is trespassing on that land unless they own it? I'm probably dumb for saying this but I don't think this action was justified.

@daddyg321 The sidewalk was part of the event. Renting out the use of the sidewalk is NORMAL for large events. In these situations, the sidewalk adjacent to the event becomes "private" and the people with the permits can tell you they don't want you loitering or protesting there. They didn't say he couldn't protest, they just didn't want him directly in front of the event. Protesting across the street was perfectly fine. He is still visible, just not in a place where he could block people.

The first amendment was drawn together because of the consequences the crown forced upon the people for speaking out against the crown, for dissent. This is assenine. Just because a group gets a permit to use public property doesn't mean they have a right to infringe on the constitutional rights of those they disagree with.
