May be a stupid question but if the .38 special and .357 magnum are the same size bullet and both 158 grain cartridges why does the magnum have more power?
@pfunk79 .38 special and .357 magnum are the same size bullet, but he 357 has a longer case and more powder. Roughly 2x as much power per SAAMI standards. The 38 evolved from the civil war 36 cal revolver. The 38 had more power with the 'new smokeless' powder than the old guns could handle, so they used the size of the "rim" as a designation. The 380, 9mm 38Spl & 357 all use about the same size bullet, its the cartridge shells that are different.
@earthdog1961 I knew the case is a little longer but I was just confused because they were both 158 grain so sounded like they had the same amount of powder.
@pfunk79 .. That is a stupid question.. It may be due to the fact the mag has more powder . I dated a girl one time that had 38s real special and she had more power over me that a .357..!!

@martyngmeyers remember this. "Its not the caliber of the bullet, but where you hit them" even a bb gun is deadly if you hit someone in the right spot
@jaratt85 Yep, I'm currently looking into buying or building a platform around a 60 gr sub-sonic 22LR. The goal is short ranged ultra quiet sniper tool.
@martyngmeyers you know, if you want to, they make kits for airsoft guns that jack the pressure way up to even make them deadly.. like over 2000fps if I remember right
@jaratt85 Sub-sonic is 1050fps or less anything over that and you get a sonic boom, it is the projectile's speed that is important. So staying sub-sonic makes it easier to quiet the remaining noise. Air guns require a pressure generating device, in a world without the electrical grid, this will be more difficult then storing some ammo. Hand pump air guns are noisy and gas canisters have another series of issues. The goal is silence and impact effect at under 150 yards.
@thatguru877 I'm trying to stay sub-sonic, the 17 HMR is super-sonic. The goal here is to get a small bullet to a target within 150 yards with an ultra-low sound signature.
@jaratt85 No such kit is available, there were rumors of such a kit in china for a certain gas powered airsoft rifle which could be converted to a .22 LR, and as a result the chinese government destroyed all copies of the rifle but no kit was ever found. Plus an airsoft bb which is made of inert abs plastic would rip apart at that speed.
At the end of the day, im pretty sure you wouldnt wanna be shot by any of them, .22lr is even proven to tumble to where it makes it tough for surgeons to remove it
That 44 mag even chipped off some paint of the adjacent plate haha! It seems faster rounds chip off more paint probably because of them having higher ft-lb impacts, but the heavier slower rounds seemed to swing the plates more, which seems to be consistent with what most people are saying.
And I have read about that FBI testing being exactly what happened a few times since taking that course. Check out a guy on here called , GunznGear , And type in 10mm: The perfect pistol cartridge. He talks about the back ground of the FBI research pretty well.
I took a two week tactical/self defence course for a job, and that is the exact round we carry. The instructor was an ex Marine and told us about the FBI doing all the research and once they had spent all the time and money too come to the conclusion, a lot of law enforcement and company's just stole the verdict and switched over to it. They actually determined the 10mm was the best round for power and capacity but people had trouble shooting it. So they went with the 180 grain, 40 cal hollows
The FBI did a month long study to decide what would be the best over all carry caliber and ammo choice. They spend a ton of man hours sending thousands of rounds down range and through various ballistic tests. At the end of the month long study they factored in stopping power, round capacity and how well it could still be effectively placed on target by most shooters. And that round is 180 grain, 40 caliber jacketed gold dot hollow points.
But they soon realized that the big 10 was too powerful for most of their shooters and s&w reduced the case capacity and came up with the .40s&w.
This round still helped to solve the dilemma of stopping power that was evidenced in the famous Miami shootout, allowed for good magazine capacity and was much easier to keep rounds on target than the 10mm.
@ScotsSens I think they actually decided on the 10mm... but it wasn't practical for grip size for people with small hands and had too much recoil. Later, the .40 came out and that is what fit the bill best.
Dead is dead, and I dont really believe in overkill...but...a 22 cal. hole through the heart will kill just as well as a 50 cal. Marksmanship and shot placement are the key. Hard to measure dead in "degrees", only physical damage.
@sirtom68 Do you know how pcp, meth, crack and other drugs effect people, guess you don't, so stopping power is the power to "incapacitate" them to do you or others harm,if you face them in a situation. Marksmanship when you are in a close gun battle comes down to instinctive reaction to point and hit, not take your aim slowly wait the opportunity, as you do not snipe. Therefore, there are many factors to consider, one being that you cannot justify a hole trough the heart/head easily, .
@katamishi What? "instinctive reaction to point and hit" And you disagree that marksmanship has a role in this task? I have shot deer with 7mm Rem Magnums, 300 win. magnums. And sometimes they run, a long distance. The shock and awe perspective of "Knockdown power" is all based on the mindset of the individual being shot, regardless of the caliber. It is not a science, and you should not study it as such.
@imzboss33 He's a bit young to be my grandpa since im almost 24, but my dad follows the channel religiously now and has a decent steel plate setup for his mini range he made out back of his house, and uses a lot of the same terms and safety procedures. (of course i follow safety as well, always have as my father taught me). That will do for me :)
I tried something like that... After the various pistol/revolver rounds, I moved-up to a 30-30 rifle. Couldn't believe I kept missing. Turns out that I wasn't. The rifle rounds zapped clean through the steel without swinging it.
Thanks for the video. Although not scientific, it actually gives a good "reference" for "feel" of the level of impact power for each caliber. Keep up the good work!
The FPS is way slower in the 45 & 44. The energy off of those would knock a person flat. tested 45 shows that they have above 90% one shot stop average. Any caliber is better than nothing. use 185 grain hollow ponts in the 45 & you got you a cannon. I have shot different things with those loads and the result is catastrophic :) Caliber choice is personal preference and my comments are just an opinion.
the 44 hit the hardest but the 40,45,10mm, and 357 def relatively close in terms of the amount of force being delivered to the steel plate...mind you this just based on my non-scientifical hypothesis on a non-scientifical experiment haha. i love hickok's videos first place i look when im thinking about a "popular" gun. i wish i could have a range in my backyard. thatd be amazing.
Good shot placement with a .22 at close range will get the job done. True story: local news; a women was getting robbed while working the front desk at a hotel and the perp made advancements to rape her and to his surprise a little gun came out and gave him one shot to the chest and that's all it took to cause his family to make funeral arrangements. Not a good choice for long distances and gangland shootouts, but if you got aim you will make it out alive in a close range defensive situation.
@pintodave My point in shootin' out someones kneecap brings them down instantly, thus bringing them to your mercy rather than snuffing them. Let the law officers take it from there. If you knew what my buddy went through because he shot an intruder dead in his home, yes, IN his home, attempting to rape his wife, it'd make your head spin. He may never recover financially from it. And the sad thing was his reasonings were justified. Think smart - shoot smart is what I'm saying...
@67madmatt I am assuming your friend does not live in a southern state such as texas or oklahoma. down here if someone is in your home, you have every right to blow them away, thus perpetuating the saying, "dead men dont tell stories". hope all goes well with your friend, as for everyone else, know your self defence laws and how they can effect you when u pull the trigger.
stopping power in pistol caliber is almost a misnomer
basically you need penetration and accuracy
people want to say the the 45acp is almost 2/7th larger in diameter than the 9mm which is true but in terms on the area of the human body this surface area increase is miniscule
I say another video of this. Only instead of FMJ, use JHP, what most folks use for self-defense, and soft targets. I'm glad this video was done though, its interesting to see the effects of each.
16rds of 10mm=no equal. And I own an HK, Kimber, Para, and Glock in .45. Put the Deagle against the Glock 20? Weight, round capacity, reliability? Nothing comes close to what u can put on your hip/chest for self defense and/or hunting out to 25-50yds (especially with the 6" barrel). This may be the perfect gun ever made for anything under 50yds out of the box. If I had to grab one apocalyptic defense tool, this would be the one. In the SF variant of course. And ammo prices are .45-ish.
I enjoy your videos. Very entertaining and you speak from experience.Im fairly sure ,however, that "knock down power" is more relative to the movies. In movies people fly like being blown up by bombs when shot when in reality what drops the bad guy is penetration and size of permanent wound channel.Shoot a bowling pin and sure it jumps.Shoot a soft target and it will pass through like butter. What does make them jerk around is internal damage to organs and nerves........Molon Labe
I have to agree with every one on here that says shot placement is more important than the ammo used. Blasting someone in the kneecap with a .380 will take em down just as quick as a .40, .45 somewhere in the chest/head. And you don't get sued by their kin for wrongful death and such...
I choose .45 statistically 1 in 10 rounds actually hit their target in a shoot out. With my .45 and a high capacity magazine I get 14 rounds. I'm likely to only hit once with out having to reload. But the same is true with most 9mm you still likely to only hit once without having to reload. I thought it would be best to increase my chances of ending it with one hit than to have and extended shoot out with reloads. Also if some one is shooting at me I'm not going to care about overkill.
The momentum of a bullet is really how much "push" a bullet would give to an attacker. What you are measuring with the steel plates is momentum. So realistically if the bullet dumps all the energy in the assailant, you would get 7.36 Ns of momentum with a .44 mag 240gr, which is equivalent to a 5 ounce baseball at 160 fps.
c'mon guys, everybody knows that the 45 is the ONLY caliber that with one shot will simultaneously blow a 200 pound heavily muscled attacker 15 feet backwards into a wall or whatever, and put a complete stop to any aggressive behavior or brainwave activity in a split second...:-) It's like some kinda magic or something, I dunno. but seriously, .22 to 500 s&w, getting perforated with any caliber would not be the definition of having a good time.
My first gun was a .45 1911. But when it came to the purchase of a carry gun, I had to go with the .40 S&W. It's not that the .45 isn't a great round! I just found the .40 to be more practical to train with.... And at the end of the day, that's what's important!
You can shoot bowling balls if you want! But if you can't hit dick.... Your boned!
The more I view this one the more I like it. Could you do one with long gun cartridges? Have to be heavier steel, but I'd like to see shotgun slug vs socom 458 etc..
in your opinion(s) which is better .45 acp or .357 magnum...i know how people think that because of what video games show that the .357 is like a superpower pistol round but i think that the .45 has just as much if not more firepower...suggestion for another video?
@redneck052997 are you really asking Hickok "45" this? lol. .357 is a good round. so is 7.62x25. High velocity, small caliber. Expanding ammo performs really well in these.
@ashackatak yeah thats what i was asking cuz i have a 1911 and ive been told many times that a .357 is more powerfull but i didnt think so, so i was trying to find out for sure
@michael1111110 Automatic Colt Pistol=acp, derived from the colt 45 auto's variation from the original 45 colt round in rifles and revolvers, smaller than a 45 colt, lengthwise.
I carry a 40S&W same as same as my wife I carried a 45ACP for some time then got to shooting an XD the purchased and XDM40 I just shot it better (shot placement). I'm not going to say either is better than the other. But I bet if I ever have to use my firearm in defense. The person is not going to say ah thats only a 40 your not going to stop me with that. and if they do then that same person would probably say the same if yo pulled out a 44 mag. you pull a .22 on me and i'm going to stop.
Hahaha, all the Internet reading and none of you have learned anything. People have survived free falls at terminal velocity. Ppl have been killed by falls in their shower. Apples to oranges, but just shows variables matter more than caliber. There is no " ideal" caliber for every purpose esp knockdown. Maybe the biggest one you can find. If I was going to battle? 308. Home defense, shotgun or maybe 45. Cause it's closer to the size of a car than the others.
@ashackatak lol, I agree with you on your weapon choices, but would take a 30-06 instead, since i dont own a 308 anymore. some people just seem to think that a smaller hole causes more damage due to velocity.Even though there are quite a few resources proving otherwise. me, for handgun, my 45 , just bc they dont make a 46, and if they did, it would be a 46.
@ghost101407 30-06 is a high power cartridge. You are dealing with lots of damage and very high velocity. IMO best of both of those worlds in an offordable gun. Light recoil for quick follow up? Takes real practice. I wish they made a carbine in it 30-06 had high cap mag options. I'd be all over it.
The lethality and damage of "light and fast" is indisputable. 7.62x25 out of a ppsh has killed a lot of ppl. However, lethality and "knock down" are two different things.
@ashackatak I agree, if they made a 30-06 in carbine, as they do a 308, I think i would jump on it also. The 30-06/308 debate is just as bas as 9/40 or 9/45. Its a preference. I dont mind the recoil really, have had both 308 and 30-06, recoil difference was minimal, about the diff of 223/6.62x39 as i feel it. as for knock down/lethality, I agree. I work in medical field, seen many killed with a 25, and many not killed with a 9mm. As for number of shots, its subjective. I own all cal.

@ashackatak Got cut off... I own all common calibers mentioned in handgun, less 44 mag. 380,9mm,357,40, 45. Though i prefer my 45, what i carry depends on where im going, what im wearing ect. For the house, whichever you get to first is the best one to have. For me, that is a broad choice and could be either, depending on where in the hosue i am. but beside the bed is a 12 ga, 9mm on one side, 45 on the other. so which ever side of bed i get out on, depends on which i grab!
Also, when comparing speeds, 200 fps matters. a .45 ACP, 230 gr at 850 fps puts out 369 ft/lb. Slow it down 200 fps, and its energy is 216 ft/lb.
That 200 fps -- bb gun speeds -- cost it over 33% of its energy.
And "knock down"? Nobody gets knocked down with anything that comes out of any pistol. They get shot, they fall. A nerf football knocks over a bowling pin.
@TROOPERfarcry Size of penetration can change trauma. That should be right up there with #1. Sheer penetration means nothing if the wound doesn't cause major trauma, enough to end the threat quickly.
Actually, this is a very scientific. The height of the swing correlates to the momentum of the bullet. In fact, this is how they measured the speed of bullets in the days before chronographs. However, I don't know that this tells you much about "stopping power".
if people wanted a more accurate debate, compare the 9mm to a 40, more realistic, and similar ballistics. 40 still is a better round overall. I own everything from a 2-380s, 9mm, 2-357, 1-40, 3-45. which would i go to, at home/45 or 12 ga with slugs, concealed carry-40 or 357. A snub 357 with 1 7/8 barrel is still ballistically better than a 125gr+p 9mm round from 4 in. if a 9mm works for you, fine, use that, or a 45, 40, 357, ect. 9mm is the smallest i would ever consider though as a "carry"
Ive watched some of the comments on here for some time and always find people opinions ammusing. energy, velocity, ect... a 45 travels roughly 200fps slower than a 9mm and is roughly twice the size with a average 100lb/ft more "muzzle energy". 9mm faster lighter and less energy. the difference is almost that of a daisy bb gun ballistics. would you rather be hit with a small or big bullet? energy isnt the "stopping" force, but damage and shock is! that is why 45 always wins the debate between 9
being shot is something i found to stop being fun the very first time....any caliber will put you in a world of hurt. Chose a weapon and caliber you can comfortably carry and put to use...the 38.special round that smashed into my spine was by no means weak, it actually landed me over 10 feet back from where i was standing..within 5 minutes i walked myself to my car and drove myself to the hospital. 3 years later i am still in pain
steal plates can actually give you a lot of information... measure the weight of the plate, distance to the pivot point, etc, and you could figure out how much power is going into each shot... DUDE! you should team up with "Smarter Every Day" and do a vid on this!!
@ftdRaw Police got away from 9MM because it's too weak. Ask anyone who has used their pos 9MM overseas in a firefight, they are about worthless on a adrenaline jacked or drugged up enemy unless you get a good nervous system disabling shot. A .45 is a real man stopper with twice the energy of a 9MM.
@KB3MMX .45 is twice the energy of a 9mm? That's not true. And .45 wasn't loved in WWII out of a Tommy Gun because it didn't kill fast enough. Anyway, military doesn't use hollow-points.
@TROOPERfarcry 45 out of a tommy gun is different than in pistols and the reason it wasnt loved was bc of its overall weight and limited range! not lack of killing power. as for 45 energy, dont believe the hype of muzzle energy ect.between rounds. Muzzle energy does not reflect energy delivered. bigger bullet = bigger hole, , and between 9 and 45, average 200fps velocity difference in reality is less than a spring loaded bb gun in difference. 45 is more likely to cause cns shock
@KB3MMX Read. From Hornady; 9mm at SAAMI specs is offered between 306 and 339 ft/lb. .45 ACP at SAAMI specs is offered between 333 and 411 ft/lb. The most powerful .45 is 21% stronger than the most powerful 9mm.
In +P for both (from Hornady) 9mm, 369 ft/lb. .45 ACP 494 ft/lb. The most poweful .45 +P is 33% more powerful than the most powerful 9mm +P.
@TROOPERfarcry Apparently you have a different version of history on the Tommy Gun than the rest of us. The Tommy Gun was complained about BECAUSE it killed so readily! It was largely responsible for the NFA act of 1934. Gangsters were slaughtering people with the .45 Tommy Gun....."Chicago Typewriter"!!
You claim that 9mm overseas doesn't kill -- that is FMJ they're using. HERE, we use hollow-points, and it makes the 9mm more effective.
WW2 showed repeatedly that .45 didn't put people down fast enough.
9mm NATO is the equivalent of 124+P -- that is hot-loaded, but its also what the military uses. When the military used .45, it wasn't +P. When most civilians use .45, it isn't +P because a 100-year old 1911 isn't meant for it.
GLOCKS and Berettas... they're chambered for 9mm NATO.
Id say 9 and up for self defense. In the hands of a competant shooter it shouldnt make a difference. Anyone who thinks there is a round that will do the work for them is unrealistic. And i cant believe there are still ppl who think a bullet can knock you down. Check out tnoutdoors channel; he shoots all types of ammo into 20lbs blocks of sim test and they barely move but someone 10x heavier is gonna be knocked off their feet?
Two things you proved is that someone can hit something at close range with a .44 S&W and that a .22 can make it swing too! Great video as usual sir!
@jgo296 ha agreed but he said carry guns. if you ever see a man carrying a 45-70 in public hes either compensating or a meth head hiding from bears that come from the shadows
@Alph4Pr0t0c0l Is the military under the Jurisdiction of the UN or Geneva Convention? P L E A S E, USA Constitution and Sovereignty is the only authority! Our military was never intended to abide by non-USA Sovereign treaties!

@ScotsSens, I like that round and that bullet weight. Do you have any links to that study / testing, etc.? I'd like to read more about it.
hickok45 2 weeks ago 23
@ScotsSens
The first choice was actually the 10mm auto.
But they soon realized that the big 10 was too powerful for most of their shooters and s&w reduced the case capacity and came up with the .40s&w.
This round still helped to solve the dilemma of stopping power that was evidenced in the famous Miami shootout, allowed for good magazine capacity and was much easier to keep rounds on target than the 10mm.
jimmyamanita 2 weeks ago
@ScotsSens The 40 was "picked' because the it was decided that female officers could handle it batter. Otherwise the 10mm was the optimum.
earthdog1961 1 week ago
@ScotsSens Proof?
kyle1058 1 week ago
@ScotsSens I think they actually decided on the 10mm... but it wasn't practical for grip size for people with small hands and had too much recoil. Later, the .40 came out and that is what fit the bill best.

Good video, shots are placed very close, and it shows the point, the tile has.
If you shot the silicone gel however, and then shwon internal damage each make, it would be a completely different story.
You will stop most with: 38 and 9, but they'd keep coming,
with 40 they'd get up if not vital, whereas with 45, 44, 357 and 10, they will have extreme difficulty wherever it hit.
With a 22 you are never sure. 45 and 10 would be my personal choice, 44 and 357 are too much, might as well carry DE.

Dead is dead, and I dont really believe in overkill...but...a 22 cal. hole through the heart will kill just as well as a 50 cal. Marksmanship and shot placement are the key. Hard to measure dead in "degrees", only physical damage.
sirtom68 3 weeks ago

If you knew what my buddy went through because he shot an intruder dead in his home, yes, IN his home, attempting to rape his wife, it'd make your head spin. He may never recover financially from it. And the sad thing was his reasonings were justified. Think smart - shoot smart is what I'm saying...

stopping power in pistol caliber is almost a misnomer
basically you need penetration and accuracy
people want to say the the 45acp is almost 2/7th larger in diameter than the 9mm which is true but in terms on the area of the human body this surface area increase is miniscule
jgo296 1 month ago

16rds of 10mm=no equal. And I own an HK, Kimber, Para, and Glock in .45. Put the Deagle against the Glock 20? Weight, round capacity, reliability? Nothing comes close to what u can put on your hip/chest for self defense and/or hunting out to 25-50yds (especially with the 6" barrel). This may be the perfect gun ever made for anything under 50yds out of the box. If I had to grab one apocalyptic defense tool, this would be the one. In the SF variant of course. And ammo prices are .45-ish.

67madmatt 1 month ago
@67madmatt If you are blasting someone in the knee-cap and not shooting to kill, you probably shouldn't be shooting them in the first place...
pintodave 1 month ago

So realistically if the bullet dumps all the energy in the assailant, you would get 7.36 Ns of momentum with a .44 mag 240gr, which is equivalent to a 5 ounce baseball at 160 fps.

c'mon guys, everybody knows that the 45 is the ONLY caliber that with one shot will simultaneously blow a 200 pound heavily muscled attacker 15 feet backwards into a wall or whatever, and put a complete stop to any aggressive behavior or brainwave activity in a split second...:-) It's like some kinda magic or something, I dunno. but seriously, .22 to 500 s&w, getting perforated with any caliber would not be the definition of having a good time.
gorylla1 1 month ago
My first gun was a .45 1911. But when it came to the purchase of a carry gun, I had to go with the .40 S&W. It's not that the .45 isn't a great round! I just found the .40 to be more practical to train with.... And at the end of the day, that's what's important!

Cause it's closer to the size of a car than the others.
ashackatak 1 month ago
@ashackatak Exactly, size DOES matter
KB3MMX 1 month ago
@ashackatak lol, I agree with you on your weapon choices, but would take a 30-06 instead, since i dont own a 308 anymore. some people just seem to think that a smaller hole causes more damage due to velocity.Even though there are quite a few resources proving otherwise. me, for handgun, my 45 , just bc they dont make a 46, and if they did, it would be a 46.
ghost101407 1 month ago
@ghost101407 30-06 is a high power cartridge. You are dealing with lots of damage and very high velocity. IMO best of both of those worlds in an offordable gun. Light recoil for quick follow up? Takes real practice. I wish they made a carbine in it 30-06 had high cap mag options. I'd be all over it.
The lethality and damage of "light and fast" is indisputable. 7.62x25 out of a ppsh has killed a lot of ppl. However, lethality and "knock down" are two different things.
ashackatak 1 month ago

For me, that is a broad choice and could be either, depending on where in the hosue i am. but beside the bed is a 12 ga, 9mm on one side, 45 on the other. so which ever side of bed i get out on, depends on which i grab!
ghost101407 1 month ago
Also, when comparing speeds, 200 fps matters. a .45 ACP, 230 gr at 850 fps puts out 369 ft/lb. Slow it down 200 fps, and its energy is 216 ft/lb.
That 200 fps -- bb gun speeds -- cost it over 33% of its energy.
And "knock down"? Nobody gets knocked down with anything that comes out of any pistol. They get shot, they fall. A nerf football knocks over a bowling pin.
Damage on vitals = killing.
In order;
penetration where it matters ..1
penetration .. 2
last... size of penetration .. 3rd.
TROOPERfarcry 1 month ago

9mm is the smallest i would ever consider though as a "carry"
ghost101407 1 month ago
@ghost101407 Exactly. a 9MM is better than having nothing BUT given the choice, there are FAR better, more effective rounds out there.
KB3MMX 1 month ago
Ive watched some of the comments on here for some time and always find people opinions ammusing. energy, velocity, ect... a 45 travels roughly 200fps slower than a 9mm and is roughly twice the size with a average 100lb/ft more "muzzle energy". 9mm faster lighter and less energy. the difference is almost that of a daisy bb gun ballistics. would you rather be hit with a small or big bullet? energy isnt the "stopping" force, but damage and shock is! that is why 45 always wins the debate between 9

KB3MMX 2 months ago
@KB3MMX .45 is twice the energy of a 9mm? That's not true. And .45 wasn't loved in WWII out of a Tommy Gun because it didn't kill fast enough. Anyway, military doesn't use hollow-points.
TROOPERfarcry 2 months ago
@TROOPERfarcry 45 out of a tommy gun is different than in pistols and the reason it wasnt loved was bc of its overall weight and limited range! not lack of killing power. as for 45 energy, dont believe the hype of muzzle energy ect.between rounds. Muzzle energy does not reflect energy delivered. bigger bullet = bigger hole, , and between 9 and 45, average 200fps velocity difference in reality is less than a spring loaded bb gun in difference. 45 is more likely to cause cns shock
ghost101407 1 month ago
@TROOPERfarcry "Tommy gun didn't kill fast enough"
. LMAO !! Now that's rich!!
KB3MMX 1 month ago
@KB3MMX If .45 was a man-stopper, the Tommy gun wouldn't have been complained about.
9mm has 369 ft/lb
.45 has 411 ft/lb
That means .45 has 11% more energy than 9mm, not 100% more.
YOU mentioned hollowpoints. "Ask anyone who had to use their POS 9mm overseas". That means military, and military means FMJ, NOT hollowpoints.
Ballistic energy is calculated at 1/2 mass x velocity x velocity. .45 is about twice as heavy, but also much slower. It isn't twice as powerful.
TROOPERfarcry 2 months ago
@TROOPERfarcry If you really think that a 9MM is even close to the power of a .45 round, you sir are a moron.
KB3MMX 1 month ago
@KB3MMX Read. From Hornady; 9mm at SAAMI specs is offered between 306 and 339 ft/lb. .45 ACP at SAAMI specs is offered between 333 and 411 ft/lb. The most powerful .45 is 21% stronger than the most powerful 9mm.
In +P for both (from Hornady) 9mm, 369 ft/lb. .45 ACP 494 ft/lb. The most poweful .45 +P is 33% more powerful than the most powerful 9mm +P.
In the military:
9mm NATO - Winchester M882 = 397 ft/lb
When the military used .45 ACP, = 369 ft/lb
9mm NATO 7% stronger.
TROOPERfarcry 1 month ago
@TROOPERfarcry Apparently you have a different version of history on the Tommy Gun than the rest of us. The Tommy Gun was complained about BECAUSE it killed so readily! It was largely responsible for the NFA act of 1934. Gangsters were slaughtering people with the .45 Tommy Gun....."Chicago Typewriter"!!
KB3MMX 1 month ago
You claim that 9mm overseas doesn't kill -- that is FMJ they're using. HERE, we use hollow-points, and it makes the 9mm more effective.
WW2 showed repeatedly that .45 didn't put people down fast enough.
9mm NATO is the equivalent of 124+P -- that is hot-loaded, but its also what the military uses. When the military used .45, it wasn't +P. When most civilians use .45, it isn't +P because a 100-year old 1911 isn't meant for it.
GLOCKS and Berettas... they're chambered for 9mm NATO.
