Interesting how sci-fi movies even before the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 were actually scientifically accurate and predicted many real spaceflight events of the 1960s... people were very optimistic back then... sad how all the optimism and excitement about manned spaceflight had all vanished since the introduction of the space shuttle in 1979-1981... that project replaced manned Mars landing and Venus manned orbit projects scheduled for the 1980s... sticking us to low-earth orbit.
Oh I don't know, folk still got their dreams, just now they know its possible. Where I use to watch Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon and "dream", my granddaughter "plans" to be the first bio-chemist on that planet. Second plan is to play Lady Macbeth on the ship on the way out.
@ClinicalAttacked It was the politicans both RIGHT & LEFT that have destroyed our manned space operations. NOTE: The Shuttle Program as built on half it budget. Inflation cut NASA's Shuttle budget in half and Congress nor the Office of the President made up the difference: SEE ENTERPRISE-1976 book Jerry Grey
As I remember, they plant seeds on Mars which the crewman from Hawaii brought with him, and at the end it rains, so the seeds sprout. This is depicted as a good and hopeful thing, not as the potential destruction of an existing Martian ecosystem.
Alas that we seem to have missed that "year 2000 AD" target date for this grand and glorious adventure to have played out in real lift.
This is really amazing considering no one in 1955 knew what the Earth really looked like from space. If you are over 45 years, you probably remember the first Apollo pictures showing the Earth from the moon.
They anted to go for absolute realism, so it's surprising that nobody considered that nothing in space can repeatedly change direction by itself (like the space station does at 0:45 and 0:54).
Yeah, I'm just in love with the old FX. It was interesting the way they did things before CGI. Not saying CGI is bad or particularly easy but there's something really pretty about what most people by today's standards would consider "bad" special effects. Plastic models, visible strings, screens to portray a background, men in suits, matte paintings- I love it all.
George Pal was an incredible visionary.

@HIMnatic Yeah, that's so they wouldn't confuse it with the air speed indicator, which might lead to a tragic accident.

the movie's worth a look, but honestly I expected better from George Pal. I'm a huge fan of space movies and this one was just boring. Sorry.

40s-60s were the best era of scifi EVER before star wars came along and made it impossible to tell the difference between scifi and action fantasy
