They are totally underrated! And a new thought... A NEW RULE by the DHS, if you buy in bulk you could be a TERRORIST. Also plant all the fruit trees you can every where. Walk in the park? sides of the high way? Woods? Cemeteries? The trees you plant now are FREE FOOD later. And the extra that you dont can, are used for BARTER. Also look up ECONOMIC COLLAPSE OF ARGENTINA. They have dentists sitting in flea markets with a folding chair doing teeth for a chicken. GOD BLESS!
You can go online and order from Dollar tree. What ever you want you can get it can be shipped into your store and held for you.So you dont always have to wait on chance buying.
Great vid There is alot to canning, time consuming and all the supplies to have on hand, but worth it. Dollar General is where I buy my quart jars every year. Remember if you want to eat only your canned foods everday, that is 1 Qt jar for 365 days for the year. Now most who grow a garden (have seeds on hand and the tools and knowledge and land available)would not even have to go near this, because of fresh veg.but if you do not have jars on hand and new seals oh well. Just my thoughts.
@Cajunize Hey thanks! Last year we put up over 50 pints of tomato, and this Christmas my wife got me a bigger pressure canner! Watch in summer for mega canning videos!
good video. just think of the pickle jars we throw away every year. the only way to stop contamination is sealing and a good old jar will work every time. cost is zero dollars and 2 minutes to wash it and let it dry. irradiation will not affect food or tobacco but one fuel flea will guarantee. get it?
Next time you are at the Dollar store you should see if they have so experience in actually growing your own food from seed that you can buy to go with the seeds. First do you know how to tell when to plant different crops using the position of the sun, or even a calendar for that matter. Second how much experience do you have in growing food using only the water that you can collect from rain water, cause when SHTF the water hoses quit working.
@digmatology Thanks for the comment. I do have a small series called the fruits of my labor, and how to put a garden to bed. Last year I was prefecting my gardening skills, well at least getting them better. I will show a lot more details next season, starts end of May 2012. I would only recommend these seeds as a very budget item.
@GaryMule after re-reading my comment I think I might have come across, well maybe a bit snide. That is not how I meant it to come across. I am right there with you on the perfecting the garden skills, you and I both know that if you can't garden before the SHTF your not suddenly going to have a green thumb after. I live everyday as if the S all ready hit the fan, that way when it does, it will be just another day to me.
Great Video, Gary! Yes- if we plan on surviving, we must spend wisely! Canning materials will be VERY important. Beware of non-heirloom seeds, though. Long-term food production, is the only chance for living, not just surviving!
the first mistake people who plan to grow food make is to think that they can buy a few packs of these, throw them in a kitchen drawer and when TSHTF the just stuff these in the ground, and voila-a years worth of food will grow for them. boy are they gonna be surprised- and hungry....the second is just this-buy poor quality, badly handled seeds, not knowing how to store and how much to get. or what will with fairly good reliability produce a crop in their own climate.
those seeds may not be the deal the look like. take the carrots for example. there are so few seeds in it, that you would need dozens of packs to get any kind of crop. so if you are just looking for a few plants of a particular variety, they may be worth it. otherwise, not so much.
Beware of those candles. I had the exact same candles and somehow the wick burned down inside the candle and melted it around the half way point. RESULT! The top of the candle fell off but remained lit. Now I had 2 candles burning. I thankfully did have the candle on a larger plate so it didnt burn the counter. Just be careful with long term burning candles.
Yea !! The Dollar Tree has that good Nature's Own bread for 1$, and the hippie health food store charges 5$ a loaf for the same brand. geeze,, this is in Lexington KY. So, go to the Dollar Tree for your Nature's Own 100% WHOLE GRAIN BREAD..no preser, colors. flavors NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. No cholesterol! It is the one with the red on the package.
@whitesoxfanforsure Same with the glow sticks right now because of halloween they have them for 2 for a dollar. Candles are cheap there also. We like to get some flashcards and other learning supplies for the kids.
Hey, I bought just this morning Green Giant green beans in a can, 2 for a dollar. And they are good!! Oh, and I got (just for me--alone) I got the wishbone salad dressing..could not believe that one!
Gonna get me some of those candles would be great to have in an emergency. Great for black outs....and who knows when one of those could occur?
I've also seen people hooking the glow bracelets to room doors around the knob. Lights the way! Hey, thanks for the sun and I'm definitely subbing back! I like what I see!
Dollar Store is a great resource for water! You will need water for cooking, washing butts and for your dishes. The second 2 can be found from lakes or rain water and can be boiled if you like.
Get green onion seed .They come up fast and you can eat them in all stages of growth. If you let them grow near to seed time when they are the tallest you can cut them into rings, they get hollow inside and also a little sweet.Onions and garlic keep you healthy and you'll have a lot less cold viruses.Lots of plants will adapt to your climate over time if you keep your own seeds.
@3344utube Funny you mention green onion. I save the bottoms from the when we buy them and I plant them. They regrow into another plant. This year I let it go to seed, I have hundreds of seeds now. I did a video on it if you want to take a look see. Thanks for watching.
coming soon TV Show SHOESTRING BLING! I get my bling on a shoestring and so can you. We take people on thrift store shopping tours and show them how to live a Versace life on a Salvation Army budget. Subscribe to my channel Shelleyfunny19 (and I'll subscribe to yours) post your tips and be on the show when we get to your town! Love your vids.
heirloom seeds are the only seeds that "hopefully" are not GMO. All others are not producing 2 generation fruit. Food shortage planning by guess who... yup NWO.
Try sprouting the seeds before planting and add some basic hydrogen peroxide to kick-start the sprouting process. American Seed Company is known for seeds that won't sprout or grow.
i have not thrown away coffee jars etc so have a lot of free glass jars just wondering how to seal any food i put in them as sometimes the lids are not in the best condition.
thanks.
anyone keeping honey bees?
they are great food source also honey can be used on small cuts.
@xrnts I do not know about using those jars. But I do save them for other things like dry goods. Also good in the garage for screws and nails etc. "LDS Prepper" keeps bees and has some videos about it. Thanks
I just stopped in a few thrift stores myself and found a KILLER deal on some light bulbs .25 cents per pack BRAND NEW!! yay also picked up some crutches for my first aid kit :)
@DesertSafire Good job, those light bulbs are soon to be illegal, nice to stock up before big brother says you can't have them. In fact you cannot buy normal light bulbs in California anymore
detroitx57~ I am trying to grow some beans that are only two years old and NOTHING ~ however these seeds were kept in my camper and I'm about 50 miles from Death Valley so you can imagine the extreme temps in my camper. In MY opinion seeds can go way past the expiration date IF you take care of them like Gary said keep them in a cool dark place. BTW I did get other items to grow that came out of the camper but my beans there was NO WAY they were doing anything!! Just depends Happy Prepping :)
@detroitx57 It depends who you ask. Some say never some say a few years. That being said I keep mine in a cool dark place some in the freezer. I am growing carrot marked 2007.
@detroitx57 I have used seeds a couple of years old and they produced. Squash seems to be one that will produce the most per seed planted tho. Any seeds i don't use when i plant or seeds i dry i keep in tupperware containers in the basement.
Im gonna have to get me some of those glow rings for my neice and nephew. if the power goes out i just staple one to each kid and never have to worry about finding him/her and getting killed by my sister LOL
Good video...It's always a good idea to trample through the dollar stores for prepping! I always find something! (batteries, seeds, etc, all kinds of stuff) ...And just to add: If you can find some yourself some green beans (seeds) at the dollar store, they're great! And damn near grow anywhere! Very easy to grow those.
With Heirloom seeds, when you pick the tomatoes or whatever, you can use the seeds from your new tomatoes. GMO's will not grow from your new vegetables. You have to buy new seeds every time. Thats the difference. With Heirloom seeds you just need to buy them one time, then your produce will supply new seeds. Big difference. You see, Monsanto wants to control all the food in the world, that's why they created GMO's.
@TheLordSod They are just ace wrap type used on the outside so with some bleach etc I am not really worried. They are more of a backup as I have boxes of stuff. Thanks for watching.
Canning jars might seem expensive but use your jars for stuff that is expensive like canned meat fish etc. I can get tomatoes in can for ~50cents save me the drama and just buy them but any canned meat or fish is muy spensive. Round here we have black berries they would be great to can since they are free a jar of food for free hey all you do is pick them and save them. Coke sells 55 gallon barrels $10 for water.
Good job! I was looking at jars today and they were $12. Pick up some lids for $1.50-2 and you still got an awesome deal.
